In the face of the unprecedented public health crisis caused by the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic, front-line health workers are under enormous mental pressure. This paper aims to explore the mental health challenges faced by front-line health workers in the early stages of a public health emergency, such as stress, anxiety, and depression. At the same time, the factors that increase their mental stress are analyzed, and practical measures are put forward to prevent and manage mental health problems, aiming at improving the quality of medical treatment during public health emergencies.

Article Synopsis
  • Environmental stressors, like cadmium (Cd), significantly contribute to acute kidney injury (AKI) by inducing ferroptosis in renal cells.
  • Exposure to Cd disrupts the arachidonic acid metabolic pathway and increases harmful lipid peroxidation markers in mice kidneys, indicating oxidative stress.
  • Reduced levels of SIRT3 lead to increased acetylation of GPX4, exacerbating ferroptosis, but treatment with nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) helps mitigate these effects.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied how environmental conditions affect if green peach aphids have wings or not.
  • They found that shorter daylight (8 hours of light and 16 hours of dark) made 90% of the aphids have wings, compared to longer daylight.
  • A special molecule called miR-3040 was discovered to control this wing difference, helping aphids develop wings based on the amount of light they get.

Sporoderm-removed Ganoderma lucidum spores ameliorated early depression-like behavior in a rat model of sporadic Alzheimer's disease.

Front Pharmacol

April 2024

Key Laboratory of Natural Medicines of the Changbai Mountain, Ministry of Education, College of Pharmacy, Yanbian University, Yanji, China.

Article Synopsis
  • G. lucidum (Lingzhi) is a traditional Chinese medicinal mushroom known for treating diseases like Alzheimer's and mood disorders; recent studies show its sporoderm-removed spore extract (RGLS) may help alleviate learning deficits and depression in rat models.
  • In experiments with rats exposed to ICV-STZ to induce depression, RGLS significantly improved depression- and anxiety-like behaviors, indicating its protective effects.
  • The study revealed that RGLS works by reducing neuroinflammation in the brain, specifically by modulating the NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammatory pathway, and promoting synaptic health through increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels.

Department of Pharmacology, School of Basic Medical Science, Peking University, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the effects of RGLS spore extract on sleep disturbances and cognitive impairments in a rat model of sporadic Alzheimer's disease (sAD).
  • Treatment with 720 mg/kg of RGLS for 14 days significantly increased total sleep time and improved both REM and non-REM sleep in sAD rats while also preventing memory deficits.
  • The research suggests that RGLS may work by inhibiting neuroinflammatory pathways and enhancing GABAergic neuron activity, offering insights into its potential benefits for cognitive function and sleep quality in Alzheimer's disease.

State Key Laboratory of Particle Detection and Electronics, Beijing 100049, Hefei 230026, People's Republic of China.

Using a sample of (10087±44)×10^{6}  J/ψ events, which is about 45 times larger than that was previously analyzed, a further investigation on the J/ψ→γ3(π^{+}π^{-}) decay is performed. A significant distortion at 1.84  GeV/c^{2} in the line shape of the 3(π^{+}π^{-}) invariant mass spectrum is observed for the first time, which could be resolved by two overlapping resonant structures, X(1840) and X(1880).

Vegetation restoration can effectively enhance soil quality and soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration. In this study, the distribution characteristics of soil nutrients and SOC along soil profile (0-100 cm), and their responses to restoration years (16, 28, 38 years) were studied in plantations in the southern mountainous area of Ningxia, compared with cropland and natural grassland. The results showed that: 1) the contents of SOC, soil total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), particulate organic carbon (POC), mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) and the proportion of particulate organic carbon to total organic carbon (POC/SOC) all decreased with increasing soil depth.
