Video-rate 3D imaging of living cells using Fourier view-channel-depth light field microscopy.

School of Optical and Electronic Information-Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics-Advanced Biomedical Imaging Facility, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, 430074, China.

Interrogation of subcellular biological dynamics occurring in a living cell often requires noninvasive imaging of the fragile cell with high spatiotemporal resolution across all three dimensions. It thereby poses big challenges to modern fluorescence microscopy implementations because the limited photon budget in a live-cell imaging task makes the achievable performance of conventional microscopy approaches compromise between their spatial resolution, volumetric imaging speed, and phototoxicity. Here, we incorporate a two-stage view-channel-depth (VCD) deep-learning reconstruction strategy with a Fourier light-field microscope based on diffractive optical element to realize fast 3D super-resolution reconstructions of intracellular dynamics from single diffraction-limited 2D light-filed measurements.

The high mortality rate associated with melanoma primarily results from metastasis and recurrence. However, the precise mechanisms driving these processes remain poorly understood. Intercellular communication between cancer cells and non-cancer cells significantly influences the tumor microenvironment and plays a crucial role in metastasis.

Background: Curcumin (CUR) and anthocyanins (ACN) are recommended due to their bioactivities. However, their nutritional values and health benefits are limited by their low oral bioavailability. The incorporation of bioactive substances into polysaccharide-protein composite nanoparticles is an effective way to enhance their bioavailability.

Osteocalcin activates lipophagy via the ADPN-AMPK/PPARα-mTOR signaling pathway in chicken embryonic hepatocyte.

Joint International Research Laboratory of Animal Health and Animal Food Safety, College of Veterinary Medicine, Southwest University, Chongqing 400715, China. Electronic address:

Fatty liver hemorrhage syndrome (FLHS) is the leading cause of noninfectious mortality in caged layers worldwide. Osteocalcin (OCN) is a protein secreted by osteoblasts, and its undercarboxylated form (ucOCN) acts as a multifunctional hormone that protects laying hens from FLHS. Lipophagy is a form of selective autophagy that breaks down lipid droplets (LDs) through lysosomes, and defective lipophagy is associated with FLHS.

December 2023

Department of Pathology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Peking University Third Hospital, Peking University Health Science Center, Beijing 100191, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study analyzes the role of mutations in the TERT promoter gene in different types of inverted urothelial lesions in the bladder, aiming to improve differential diagnosis from 2016 to 2022.
  • - A total of 32 patients were examined, revealing no TERT mutations in less aggressive lesions like florid glandular cystitis and inverted urothelial papilloma, while mutation rates increased with malignancy, particularly in nested subtype urothelial carcinoma where all tested cases exhibited mutations.
  • - The prevalent mutation types in the cases analyzed were primarily C228T and C250T, indicating that combining tumor morphology with TERT mutation analysis can aid in distinguishing between benign and malignant urothelial lesions.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a prevalent complication of diabetes, significantly impacting patients' quality of life due to vision loss. No pharmacological therapies are currently approved for DR, excepted the drugs to treat diabetic macular edema such as the anti-VEGF agents or steroids administered by intraocular route. Advancements in research have highlighted the crucial role of early intervention in DR for halting or delaying disease progression.

Classical myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), also known as PhMPN, includes polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (PMF). Secondary myelofibrosis (sMF) and secondary acute myeloid leukemia (sAML) are important disease progressions of MPN. After MPN disease progression, hematopoietic stem cells undergo new clonal evolution, leading to drug resistance, poor treatment effect and poor survival of patients.

Electronic address:

The performance of biocathode in an enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC) in the real application is somehow overlooked. Herein, a wearable and flexible lactic-acid/O EBFC enhanced with an air-breathing biocathode is designed to solve the limitation of biocathode that arises from the low solubility and slow mass transfer of the dissolved oxygen. To improve the oxygen supply efficiency for the air-breathing biocathode, a superhydrophobic base electrode creating an efficient air-solid-liquid triphase interface is developed.

Chronic stress has been considered to induce depressive symptoms, such as anhedonia, particularly in susceptible individuals. Synaptic plasticity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is closely associated with susceptibility or resilience to chronic stress-induced anhedonia. However, effects of chronic stress with different durations on the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie susceptibility to anhedonia remain unclear.

Background: Although smoking is a known potential contributor to back pain, there is still a lack of quantitative studies on the effects of different doses on back pain (BP) occurrence, including a lack of a longitudinal cohorts. To address this gap, we aimed to investigate the association between various smoking-related exposures and back pain incidence to advance global efforts toward smoking cessation and guide primary prevention of BP.

Methods: In this prospective cohort study, we retrieved data on 438 510 patients from the UK Biobank who were free of back pain and who were recruited in 2006-2010, and followed them up from baseline through 1 April 2022.

Removal of nitrate by FeSiBC metallic glasses: high efficiency and superior reusability.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

November 2023

State Key Laboratory for Strength and Vibration of Mechanical Structures, School of Aerospace Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an 710049, China.

The development of sustainable technologies for efficient nitrate removal has attracted increasing attention, because excessive nitrate emissions can result in serious environmental, economic, and health effects. Herein, we propose to utilize FeSiBC metallic glass (MG) powders as a potential solution for nitrate removal. In terms of removal efficiency and reusability, our results show that the MG powders, as special zero-valent iron carriers, are 2-3 orders of magnitude more efficient in nitrate removal than the previous studies, while maintaining more than 50% nitrate removal efficiency after 9 cycles of reaction.

Symmetry-Broken Chern Insulators in Twisted Double Bilayer Graphene.

Nano Lett

December 2023

Department of Physics, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195, United States.

Twisted double bilayer graphene (tDBG) has emerged as a rich platform for studying strongly correlated and topological states, as its flat bands can be continuously tuned by both a perpendicular displacement field and a twist angle. Here, we construct a phase diagram representing the correlated and topological states as a function of these parameters, based on measurements of over a dozen tDBG devices encompassing two distinct stacking configurations. We find a hierarchy of symmetry-broken states that emerge sequentially as the twist angle approaches an apparent optimal value of θ ≈ 1.

Polychromatic Dual-Mode Imaging with Structured Chiral Photonic Crystals.

Nano Lett

January 2024

National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures, Key Laboratory of Intelligent Optical Sensing and Manipulation, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Collaborative Innovation Center of Advanced Microstructures, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210093, China.

Optical spatial differentiation is a typical operation of optical analog computing and can single out the edge to accelerate the subsequent image processing, but in some cases, overall information about the object needs to be presented synchronously. Here, we propose a multifunctional optical device based on structured chiral photonic crystals for the simultaneous realization of real-time dual-mode imaging. This optical differentiator is realized by self-organized large-birefringence cholesteric liquid crystals, which are photopatterned to encode with a special integrated geometric phase.
