The present study investigated the potential of ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) in assessment of muscle stiffness in muscle injury. SWE was performed on the injured muscle in 30 New Zealand rabbits that were randomly assigned to three groups: the contusion group, which was not treated with an efficient therapeutic strategy after muscle injury; the treatment group, which was treated with a therapeutic scheme after muscle injury; and the healthy group, which was not injured and served as a control. Both the mean Young's modulus (E) and the maximum Young's modulus (E) were obtained pre-injury and 0.

Plasma brain natriuretic peptide is a biomarker for screening ischemic cerebral small vessel disease in patients with hypertension.

Medicine (Baltimore)

August 2018

Department of Cardiology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Pharmaceutical University Department of Neurology, Zengcheng People's Hospital (Boji-Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University) School of Clinical Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Guangzhou Veterinary medicine, Northeast Agricultural University, Haerbin, China.

Plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), a diagnostic marker of cardiovascular diseases, has been previously linked to cerebrovascular diseases. Our goal was to determine whether plasma BNP level is helpful for identifying high-risk individuals who are likely to present with the 3 main subtypes of cerebral small vessel diseases (CSVDs), namely, white matter lesions, lacunar infarcts, and cerebral microbleeds, on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with hypertension.Three hundred forty-six consecutive hypertensive patients presenting at our cardiology or neurology clinic were investigated.

Retrospective analysis of prognosis and risk factors of patients with stroke by TOAST.

Medicine (Baltimore)

April 2018

Department of Neurology Department of Emergency, The Zengcheng People's Hospital (Boji-Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University), Guangzhou The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, Guangdong, China.

To determine differences in 90-day mortality and identify risk factors among different etiological classifications of ischemic stroke using the Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) classification. Our retrospective analysis included 538 ischemic stroke patients. The cause of stroke was categorized according to the TOAST criteria, and 90-day mortality rates were obtained through the patient follow-up.

Aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Many microRNAs (miRNAs), small non-coding RNAs, are involved in regulating cancer cell proliferation, metastasis, migration, invasion and apoptosis.

Main Methods: We investigated the expression of miR-135a in HCC cell lines and clinical tissues.

Objective: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) is a transcription factor involved in atherosclerosis and related diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether PPARG C161T was associated with lipid levels and large-artery atherosclerosis (LAA) ischemic stroke in a Han Chinese population in Guangdong province.

Methods: The genotype PPARG C161T in 149 LAA ischemic stroke patients and 125 healthy controls was examined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assay.

Objectives: Tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) is the most common type of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in China, and its survival rate remains unsatisfactory. miR-22 has been identified as a tumor suppressor in many human cancers, and high expression of CD147 occurs in many tumors. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression and function of miR-22 in TSCC and its relationship with the expression of CD147.

EB-virus latent membrane protein 1 potentiates the stemness of nasopharyngeal carcinoma via preferential activation of PI3K/AKT pathway by a positive feedback loop.

Department of Experimental Research, State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Medicine, Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center, Guangzhou China.

Our previous study reported that Epstein-Barr virus(EBV)-encoded latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) could induce development of CD44(+/High) stem-like cells in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, the molecular mechanisms that underlie modulation of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in NPC remain unclear. Here, we show that LMP1 induced CSC-like properties through promotion of the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition-like cellular markers and through alterations in differentiation markers.

Obesity increases the incidence, progression and mortality of breast cancer among postmenopausal females. This is partly due to excessive estrogen production in the adipose tissue of obese females. Aromatase is a key enzyme in estrogen biosynthesis.

Metastasis is the leading cause of cancer-related death in almost all types of cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Metastasis is a complex, multistep, dynamic biological event, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a critical process during the cascade. Ajuba family proteins are LIM domain-containing proteins and are reported to be transcription repressors regulating different kinds of physiological processes.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common human malignancies and the third leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. The development and progression of HCC is a complicated process, involving the deregulation of multiple genes that are essential to cell biological processes. Recently, microRNAs (miRNAs) have been suggested to be closely associated with tumorigenesis.
