Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to determine how common endometrial polyps are in patients with uterine fibroids and what factors influence their coexistence.
  • - Out of 772 patients reviewed, 20.1% had endometrial polyps; factors like being over 45, having hypertension, endometrial hyperplasia, and cervical polyps increased the likelihood of having both conditions.
  • - Interestingly, the study found that using condoms was linked to a lower occurrence of polyps, while having two or more fibroids and a largest fibroid size under 8 cm was associated with a higher prevalence of polyps.

Development of the human nervous system involves complex interactions among fundamental cellular processes and requires a multitude of genes, many of which remain to be associated with human disease. We applied whole exome sequencing to 128 mostly consanguineous families with neurogenetic disorders that often included brain malformations. Rare variant analyses for both single nucleotide variant (SNV) and copy number variant (CNV) alleles allowed for identification of 45 novel variants in 43 known disease genes, 41 candidate genes, and CNVs in 10 families, with an overall potential molecular cause identified in >85% of families studied.

Purpose: Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and its receptor play a major role in the development of follicles and regulation of steroidogenesis in the ovary and spermatogenesis in the testis. We aim to analyze the role of FSHR gene variants (single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in exon 10 (codon 307 and 680) and in the core promoter region (at position -29) and Ala189Val inactivating mutation) in Turkish infertile women. There were studies analyzing the effects of the SNPs in exon 10 (codon 307 and 680) and in the core promoter region (at position -29) of the FSHR gene on spermatogenesis, but to our knowledge, there were no studies analyzing the effects of these three SNP combinations on female fertility.

ADAMTS4 and ADAMTS5 knockout mice are protected from versican but not aggrecan or brevican proteolysis during spinal cord injury.

Biomed Res Int

April 2015

Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2-5-1 Shikata-cho, Kita-ku, Okayama 700-8558, Japan.

The chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) aggrecan, versican, and brevican are large aggregating extracellular matrix molecules that inhibit axonal growth of the mature central nervous system (CNS). ADAMTS proteoglycanases, including ADAMTS4 and ADAMTS5, degrade CSPGs, representing potential targets for ameliorating axonal growth-inhibition by CSPG accumulation after CNS injury. We investigated the proteolysis of CSPGs in mice homozygous for Adamts4 or Adamts5 null alleles after spinal cord injury (SCI).

Listeria monocytogenes, although an uncommon cause of illness in the general population, is an important pathogen in pregnants, neonates, elderly and immunocompromised patients. Neonatal listeriosis is classified as early (< 5 days) and late (? 5 days) according to the onset of the symptoms and findings of the infection. The most encountered serotypes in early neonatal listeriosis are 1a and 1b, while serotype 4a is more prevalent in the late form.

Background: The aim of this study was to define treatment modalities in tubo-ovarian abscesses (TOA) using a scoring system. As there is no scoring system for TAO there is still a controversy on the management. In our opinion, as there is no evidence based TAO management strategy, a scoring system is needed in the management of these patients.
