Neurofilament light in serum: Reference values and effect of risk factors for multiple sclerosis.

Mult Scler Relat Disord

December 2024

Danish Multiple Sclerosis Center, Department of Neurology, Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet, Glostrup, Denmark; Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark. Electronic address:

Background: The measurement of neurofilament light (NFL) in blood samples has been established as a sensitive measure of neuroaxonal damage in a wide range of diseases in the peripheral and central nervous system, including multiple sclerosis (MS). Previous studies have identified confounding factors that may influence the serum concentration of NFL.

Aim: We aimed at investigating the relationship between known confounders (age, body mass index, blood volume) and risk factors for MS (smoking and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)) on serum concentrations of NFL in control subjects.

The contact system in chronic kidney disease and hemodialysis - A cross-sectional study.

Thromb Res

January 2025

Department of Cancer and Inflammation Research, Institute for Molecular Medicine, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark; Department of Nephrology, Odense University Hospital, Odense, Denmark. Electronic address:

Background And Hypothesis: The contact system (CAS) is a part of both the immune system and the coagulation system. The involvement of the CAS in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hemodialysis (HD) has been documented, yet conflicting findings have hindered a comprehensive understanding. This study aimed to investigate whether CAS activation occurs in patients with chronic kidney failure undergoing HD compared with those undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), patients with CKD not receiving replacement therapy, or healthy controls and to assess the impact of HD on CAS from pre- to post-dialysis during a single session of HD.

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be useful in detecting labyrinthitis and thereby predicting the development of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in adults with central nervous system (CNS) infections. We therefore investigated the coherence between brain MRI and SNHL among adults with CNS infections.

Methods: Twenty-eight patients with bacterial or viral meningitis, viral encephalitis, or Lyme neuroborreliosis, who had a brain MRI during the acute disease and pure-tone audiometry at follow-up, were included.

Aims: Beta-blockers may inhibit neprilysin activity and conversely, neprilysin inhibition may have a sympatho-inhibitory action. Consequently, sacubitril/valsartan may have a greater effect in patients not receiving a beta-blocker compared to those treated with a beta-blocker.

Methods And Results: We examined the effect of sacubitril/valsartan compared to enalapril on outcomes according to background beta-blocker treatment in the 8399 patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction enrolled in PARADIGM-HF.

This study investigates the role of language in cross-sector collaboration between mental health hospitals and municipalities, focusing on the challenges of maintaining continuity of care and integrating patient-centered approaches. Using Fairclough's framework for critical discourse analysis, we examined focus group interviews with 21 healthcare professionals, including nurses, social workers, and psychiatrists, to identify key themes and patterns in how cross-sector collaboration is discussed. The analysis revealed a dominant medicalized discourse in hospital settings, which often emphasized structured care processes like treatment plans and medication management, overshadowing more flexible, patient-centered approaches common in community-based services.

Treating Older Patients in Cardiogenic Shock With a Microaxial Flow Pump: Is It DANGERous?

J Am Coll Cardiol

November 2024

Department of Cardiology, Copenhagen University Hospital-Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark; Department of Cardiology, Odense University Hospital, Odense, Denmark; Department of Clinical Research, University of Southern, Odense, Denmark. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines how age influences the effectiveness of microaxial flow pump (mAFP) treatment for patients suffering from ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and cardiogenic shock (CS), using data from the DanGer Shock trial involving 355 participants.
  • Findings reveal that mortality rates significantly increase with age, from 31% in the youngest group to 73% in the oldest, showing younger patients (<77 years) benefit more from mAFP treatment (lower mortality), while older patients (≥77 years) do not have the same advantage.
  • The study also notes that complications were more common in the mAFP group, but overall, age significantly impacted survival outcomes, highlighting

Aims: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with heart failure (HF). However, it is unclear if postoperative AF (POAF) following non-cardiac surgery differs from non-surgical AF in terms of the risk of HF. We compared the long-term rate of incident HF in patients developing new-onset POAF following non-cardiac surgery with patients who did not develop POAF following non-cardiac surgery and patients with non-surgical non-valvular AF (NVAF).
