From the Hagey Laboratory for Pediatric Regenerative Medicine, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, Stanford University; Department of Hand, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery, BG Trauma Center Ludwigshafen, Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg; Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Whiting School of Engineering, and Institute for NanoBioTechnology, Johns Hopkins University; Translational Tissue Engineering Center and Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; Department for Plastic and Breast Surgery, Zealand University Hospital Roskilde; and Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine.

Background: Fractionated fat has been shown to promote dermal regeneration; however, the use of fat grafting for reconstruction of soft-tissue defects is limited because of volume loss over time. The authors have developed a novel approach for engineering of vascularized soft tissue using an injectable nanofiber hydrogel composite enriched with fractionated fat.

Methods: Fractionated fat was generated by emulsification of groin fat pads from rats and mixed in a 3:1 ratio with nanofiber hydrogel composite (nanofiber hydrogel composite with fractionated fat).

Periodic Repolarization Dynamics Identifies ICD Responders in Nonischemic Cardiomyopathy: A DANISH Substudy.

Circulation

March 2022

Medizinische Klinik und Poliklinik I, LMU Klinikum, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Germany (L.v.S., M.K., K.D.R.)., German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), Germany (L.v.S., M.K., K.D.R.).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how periodic repolarization dynamics (PRD) can identify nonischemic cardiomyopathy patients who might benefit from getting a cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implanted as a preventive measure against sudden cardiac events.
  • A post hoc analysis of the DANISH trial included patients with severe heart function issues (LVEF ≤35% and high NT-proBNP levels) to see how baseline PRD, measured using 24-hour Holter monitors, related to their mortality.
  • Results showed that higher PRD was linked to higher mortality in patients not receiving ICDs, while there was no significant link in those with ICDs, suggesting that PRD could help target patients who would benefit most from ICD therapy

Lung Ultrasound Findings Associated With COVID-19 ARDS, ICU Admission, and All-Cause Mortality.

Respir Care

January 2022

Cardiovascular Non-Invasive Imaging Research Laboratory, Department of Cardiology, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the use of lung ultrasound (LUS) as a diagnostic tool for assessing COVID-19 patients, specifically looking at how LUS findings correlate with serious hospital outcomes like ARDS, ICU admissions, and mortality rates.
  • A total of 215 patients with confirmed COVID-19 were enrolled, but only 168 had usable LUS data, revealing that 81% exhibited abnormal LUS findings despite not showing ARDS or being in ICU at the time.
  • Although some disease severity markers were higher in patients with serious outcomes, the LUS findings and scores did not significantly differ between those who experienced serious complications and those who did not, indicating that LUS may not be a reliable predictor of these outcomes in this patient group.

Exercise facilitates cerebral lactate uptake, likely by increasing arterial lactate concentration and hence the diffusion gradient across the blood-brain barrier. However, nonspecific β-adrenergic blockade by propranolol has previously reduced the arterio-jugular venous lactate difference (AV) during exercise, suggesting β-adrenergic control of cerebral lactate uptake. Alternatively, we hypothesized that propranolol reduces cerebral lactate uptake by decreasing arterial lactate concentration.
