Pediatr Surg Int

October 2024

Division of Pediatric Surgery, Department of Pediatrics, Medical School, University of Pecs, 7 Jozsef Attila Street, Pecs, 7633, Hungary.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how well doctors diagnose appendicitis in kids during surgery compared to what the lab finds after.
  • It included 1444 kids who had their appendices taken out between 2011 and 2020, comparing two types of surgery: laparoscopic (small cuts) and open (bigger cut).
  • The results showed that when surgeons believed the problem was less severe than it really was, kids stayed in the hospital longer and had more complications.

The short arm of chromosome 16 (16p) is enriched for segmental duplications, making it susceptible to recurrent, reciprocal rearrangements implicated in the etiology of several phenotypes, including intellectual disability, speech disorders, developmental coordination disorder, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, obesity and congenital skeletal disorders. In our clinical study 73 patients were analyzed by chromosomal microarray, and results were confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization or polymerase chain reaction. All patients underwent detailed clinical evaluation, with special emphasis on behavioral symptoms.

Importance: Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated a substantial benefit of adding everolimus to endocrine therapy. Everolimus inhibits the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) complex but not mTORC2, which can set off an activating feedback loop via mTORC2. Vistusertib, a dual inhibitor of mTORC1 and mTORC2, has demonstrated broad activity in preclinical breast cancer models, showing superior activity to everolimus.

Background: Because of its advantages, full midline sternotomy has remained the main approach for cardiac surgery. However, the development of post-sternotomy wound infections is its primary disadvantage. We evaluated the impact of xiphoid process (XIP)-sparing midline sternotomy regarding reducing the risk of deep sternal wound infections (DSWIs).

Introduction: To study the long-term evolution of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in the most common spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs), we analyzed 8 years follow-up data of the EUROSCA Natural History Study, a cohort study of 526 patients with SCA1, SCA2, SCA3 and SCA6.

Methods: To assess the functional capacity in daily living, we used the functional assessment (part IV) of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS-IV), for health-related quality of life the visual analogue scale of the EuroQol Five Dimensions Questionnaire (EQ-5D VAS), and for depressive symptoms the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Severity of ataxia was assessed using the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA) and neurological symptoms other than ataxia with the Inventory of Non-Ataxia Signs (INAS).

Aim Of The Study: Combination of ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir + dasabuvir ± ribavirin (3DDA±RBV) therapy is shown to be effective in HCV genotype 1 (GT1) infected patients. However, sparse data exist in patients who failed previous boceprevir or telaprevir based therapies. Real life efficacy and safety of this combination were evaluated in HCV GT1b infected patients (mostly cirrhotics) with compensated liver disease who failed previous boceprevir or telaprevir based therapies more than a year before.

Background: Deep sternal wound infections (DSWIs) are a rare but serious complication after median sternotomy, and treatment success depends mainly on surgical experience. We compared treatment outcomes after conventional sternal rewiring and reconstruction with no sternal rewiring in patients with a sternal wound infection.

Methods: We retrospectively enrolled patients who developed a DSWI after an open-heart procedure with median sternotomy at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, at the St.

Cardiac Repair and Regeneration: The Value of Cell Therapies.

Eur Cardiol

April 2015

MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine and College of Medicine and Veterinary, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK; David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Orthopaedic Hospital Research Centre, University of California at Los Angeles, USA.

Ischaemic heart disease is the predominant contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality; one million myocardial Infarctions occur per year in the USA, while more than five million patients suffer from chronic heart failure. Recently, heart failure has been singled out as an epidemic and is a staggering clinical and public health problem associated with significant mortality, morbidity and healthcare expenditures, particularly among those aged ≥65 years. Death rates have improved dramatically over the last four decades, but new approaches are nevertheless urgently needed for those patients who go on to develop ventricular dysfunction and chronic heart failure.
