Coexistence of genital lichen sclerosus and genital warts.

Acta Dermatovenerol Alp Pannonica Adriat

December 2018

Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic, inflammatory, mucocutaneous disorder of the genital and extragenital skin. Anogenital warts are benign proliferative lesions caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), which is found in > 95% of lesions. We present two cases of the coexistence of LS and genital warts: one patient with and one without a previous history of genital warts.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) compared to osteoarthritis (OA) patients, linking it to higher chronic inflammation levels in RA.
  • Findings revealed that OA patients had a 1.6-fold higher prevalence of MetS, with greater waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, and triglycerides than RA patients, while some measures were similar between both groups.
  • Multivariate analysis indicated that OA type, age, and ESR levels were significant predictors of MetS, suggesting an increased risk for OA patients potentially linked to a shared underlying cause.

Purpose: To investigate the connection between alexithymia and somatic illness, or, somatization, in veterans suffering from chronic combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD.

Methods: Croatian combat veterans (N=127) were studied at the Department of Psychology, Zagreb Clinical Hospital Center. The diagnosis of PTSD was confirmed and verified according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10).

Melanoma of the female urethra.

Med Oncol

March 2013

Department of Surgery, Zagreb Clinical Hospital Center, Šalata 2, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia.

Primary melanoma of the female urethra is a very rare malignant tumor with high mortality. Due to its rarity, there are no guidelines and recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of such patients, so we aimed to review the reported cases and case series, their treatment, and outcome. We searched through PubMed for all articles reporting on female urethral melanoma.

Modern photo-optical coagulometers collect optical data in the form of reaction curves and offer a possibility to determine clotting times at different points of clot formation by using different evaluation modes. The objectives of this study were to determine the possible impact of an evaluation mode on activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) results and to investigate potential benefits from visual inspection of obtained reaction curves. APTT was determined by using actin FS as reagent on two coagulometers (Siemens Medical Solutions) in 174 plasma samples with three different evaluation modes: fixed absorbance (FA), drifting baseline (DB), and point of inflexion (POI) on Behring coagulation timer (BCT), and with DB mode on Behring coagulation system (BCS).

Aims And Background: Lipid peroxidation (LPO) is an autocatalytic process caused by oxidative stress. It results in the production of 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE), which plays a crucial role in hypoxic brain injury, neuronal degeneration and apoptosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of HNE in 120 astrocytic and 40 ependymal tumors in relation to tumor type, grade of malignancy, angiogenesis, and presence of necrosis and apoptosis.

We present the case of an 11-year-old girl who had a corrective osteotomy reconstruction using absorbable implants for a malunited capitellar fracture 3-1/2 months after a dislocation of her elbow joint. This operative stabilization enabled early joint mobilization and, finally, excellent results in terms of anatomy and function at a 2-year follow-up. We were not able to find any similar report in the English literature dealing with corrective osteotomy reconstruction using absorbable implant fixation for a malunited capitellum in a child.

IgH and TCRgamma gene rearrangements, cyclin A1 and HOXA9 gene expression in biphenotypic acute leukemias.

Leuk Res

February 2006

Division of Immunology, Clinical Institute of Laboratory Diagnosis, Zagreb University School of Medicine, Zagreb Clinical Hospital Center, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia.

In this study we investigated IgH and TCRgamma gene rearrangements, cyclin A1 and HOXA9 gene expression as well as the in vitro growth of biphenotypic acute leukemia (BAL) blasts in relation to acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The aim of the study was to correlate BAL morphology and its biological parameters in order to get information that might be used for additional stratification of BAL. This rare form of AL was identified in a total of 10 patients, comprising 4.

Objectives: Most cases of granulosa cell tumors (GCT) of the ovary are characterized by a relatively good outcome. However, some tumors behave aggressively and some tend to recur many years after the initial diagnosis. Tumor growth depends on cell proliferation and angiogenesis.

Alterations in lymphocyte phenotype of infected preterm newborns.

Biol Neonate

December 2001

Division of Neonatology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Zagreb Clinical Hospital Center, University School of Medicine, Zagreb, Croatia.

The cord blood lymphocytes from 44 premature newborns were analyzed using two-color monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry. Depending on whether or not there was an infection at birth, the newborns were divided into two groups and the immunophenotypes of infected and uninfected newborns were compared. The percentage of T lymphocytes (CD3+) was significantly lower in the infected prematures.

Are respiratory allergic diseases related to atopic dermatitis?

Coll Antropol

December 2000

Department of Dermatovenerology, Zagreb Clinical Hospital Center, Zagreb University School of Medicine, Zagreb, Croatia.

The difference of test results between patients with "pure" atopic dermatitis (AD) and "mixed" AD (with concomitant respiratory allergy, RA) was investigated in 30 AD patients. The results showed the onset of disease that mostly occur in the early infancy [15 (50%) patients had developed the disease under the age of 2-2/10 in "pure" AD, and 13/20 in "mixed" AD]. Twenty (66.

Aims And Background: Breast carcinoma is a heterogeneous disease, the prognosis of which correlates with various prognostic factors. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic significance of c-erbB-2 overexpression in breast carcinoma patients in association with other known prognostic factors.

Methods & Study Design: The relationship between immunohistochemical expression of the c-erbB-2 oncoprotein and various established prognostic factors such as tumor size, axillary node status, estrogen and progesterone receptor status, DNA ploidy, proliferation index, cathepsin D expression and histological grade in invasive ductal breast carcinoma is presented in this study.

We have studied the correlation of two methods (immunohistology and ELISA in cytosol) of cathepsin D (CD) determination in breast carcinoma patients. Fifty six specimens of tumor tissue were collected consecutively, and CD expression in tumor tissue and tissue macrophages was determined by standard immunohistochemistry using the aNCL-CDm anti-cathepsin D mouse monoclonal antibody (Novocastra Laboratories Ltd., Newcastle, UK).

In 148 patients admitted to hospital with acute cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), the levels of glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and blood glucose were measured to evaluate the effect of the duration and severity of hyperglycaemia on stroke outcome. Eighty-eight (59%) patients had clearly normal blood glucose and HbA1c concentrations (blood glucose less than 5.5 mmol l-1, HbA1c less than 8.
