Keratinous matrices - hair and nails - accumulate substances over time and allow retrospective investigation of past consumption. Analysis of these matrices can provide information complementary to blood and urine analysis or can be used as standalone. So far, research has primarily focused on the detection of substances in hair, while studies in nails are scarce.

Department of Intensive Care Medicine and High Care Burn Unit Ziekenhuis Netwerk Antwerpen ZNA Stuivenberg Hospital, Antwerp, Belgium, Brussels, Belgium; Department of Intensive Care University Hospital Brussels (UZB) Jette, Belgium; Faculty of Medicine, Free University of Brussels (VUB) Brussels, Belgium.

The gastrointestinal tract comprises diverse functions. Despite recent developments in technology and science, there is no single and universal tool to monitor GI function in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Clinical evaluation is complex and has a low sensitivity to diagnose pathological processes in the abdomen.

To quantify alcohol use, objective, specific and sensitive long-term alcohol markers are necessary. Ethyl glucuronide (EtG), a direct metabolite of alcohol, accumulates in keratinous matrices such as hair and nails, and is a specific and sensitive long-term biomarker for the detection of chronic alcohol consumption. So far, research has primarily focused on the detection of EtG in hair, and studies on its measurement in nails are scarce.

Introduction: The use of vasopressin and other vasoconstrictive agents to reduce blood loss during laparoscopic myomectomy significantly reduces blood loss and operative time. However, serious cardiovascular complications following the use of intramyometrial injection of vasopressin solution have also been reported. Most of these side effects are believed to be due to inadvertent intravascular injection of vasopressin solution.

Hair and nails allow for a stable accumulation of compounds over time and retrospective investigation of past exposure and/or consumption. Owing to their long window of detection (weeks to months), analysis of these matrices can provide information complementary to blood and urine analysis or can be used in standalone when e.g.

Background: The management of chronic abdominal pain after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGP) is complex and challenging. Foreign body intestinal perforation including that caused by fish bones has previously been reported in the literature and if clinically unrecognized, can cause significant morbidity and mortality. Fish bone perforation as a cause of chronic abdominal pain after LRYGP has rarely been reported.

The CERAB technique: tips, tricks and results.

J Cardiovasc Surg (Torino)

June 2016

Vascular Clinic ZNA, ZNA Stuivenberg Hospital, Antwerp, Belgium -

In this article we wanted to present an overview of the latest study results, in vitro and in vivo, of the Covered Endovascular Reconstruction of the Aortic Bifurcation or CERAB technique and the C-CERAB or Chimney CERAB for the endovascular treatment of either extensive occlusive aortoiliac or iuxtarenal disease with preservation of visceral arteries; in combination with tips and tricks to facilitate recanalization and revascularization. A review was performed of the literature of the last 5 years regarding the endovascular treatment of aortoiliac and iuxtarenal TASC II C& D lesions with covered balloon expandable stents. Furthermore we did a retrospective analysis of our most special techniques to achieve a successful interventional recanalization of these challenging lesions.

Hair ethyl glucuronide and serum carbohydrate deficient transferrin for the assessment of relapse in alcohol-dependent patients.

Clin Biochem

May 2016

Toxicological Center, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium; Toxicology and TDM Laboratory, ZNA Stuivenberg Hospital, Antwerp, Belgium.

Objectives: Ethyl glucuronide in hair (hEtG) and serum carbohydrate deficient transferrin (%CDT) are valuable markers for alcohol abuse, but their diagnostic accuracy to monitor abstinence and relapse is unclear. Here, we investigate to what extent repeated measurements of hEtG and %CDT can be used to monitor relapse in alcohol-dependent patients during abstinence treatment.

Design And Methods: HEtG and %CDT were measured in individuals starting treatment for alcohol dependence both at treatment entry and 3months later.

IAH/ACS: the rationale for surveillance.

World J Surg

June 2009

ZNA Stuivenberg Hospital, Lange Beeldekensstraat 267, 2060, Antwerp, Belgium.

Surveillance for intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) should be implemented in every intensive care unit (ICU), because it has been demonstrated that surveillance is effective. Several criteria that have led to the conclusion that IAH/ACS monitoring is of value: First, IAH is a frequent problem in critically ill patients that directly affects function of all organ systems to some degree, and that is associated with considerable mortality. Furthermore, simple tools for intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) monitoring are available, and it can be safely applied without the need for advanced tools.
