  • Maintaining ideal body weight and muscle strength is crucial for enhancing daily activities and increasing life expectancy in older hypertensive patients.
  • A study involving 563 patients showed that a low body mass index (BMI < 22 kg/m) and low handgrip strength (HG) were associated with higher mortality risks, particularly the latter which posed a 3.7-fold increase.
  • These findings suggest that weight reduction in older individuals with hypertension might worsen their mortality risk, indicating a need for new lifestyle strategies to improve their overall health and quality of life.

Determining zebrafish dorsal organizer size by a negative feedback loop between canonical/non-canonical Wnts and Tlr4/NFκB.

Nat Commun

November 2023

Department of Homeostatic Regulation, Division of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, Suita, Osaka, 565-0871, Japan.

In vertebrate embryos, the canonical Wnt ligand primes the formation of dorsal organizers that govern dorsal-ventral patterns by secreting BMP antagonists. In contrast, in Drosophila embryos, Toll-like receptor (Tlr)-mediated NFκB activation initiates dorsal-ventral patterning, wherein Wnt-mediated negative feedback regulation of Tlr/NFκB generates a BMP antagonist-secreting signalling centre to control the dorsal-ventral pattern. Although both Wnt and BMP antagonist are conserved among species, the involvement of Tlr/NFκB and feedback regulation in vertebrate organizer formation remains unclear.

Introduction: Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are highly prevalent among kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Although osteoporosis is known to increase fracture risk in KTRs, it is unclear whether sarcopenia or osteosarcopenia is associated with this increased risk. Thus, we aimed to investigate the association of the coexistence of low muscle mass (LMM) and osteoporosis with the risk of fracture in long-term KTRs.

Background: With the increasing popularity of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided transmural interventions, walled-off necrosis (WON) of the pancreas is increasingly managed via non-surgical endoscopic interventions. However, there has been an ongoing debate over the appropriate treatment strategy following the initial EUS-guided drainage. Direct endoscopic necrosectomy (DEN) removes intracavity necrotic tissue, potentially facilitating early resolution of the WON, but may associate with a high rate of adverse events.
