Protective Effect of Escin Against Kidney Injury: Histopathological and Biochemical Evaluations.

The purpose of the current study was to find out whether escin (ES) safeguarded experimental rats against cyclophosphamide (CP)-induced kidney injury. Twenty-four rats were randomly divided into four groups ( = 6). After the examination, histological and biochemical analyses were performed to assess the alterations in kidney tissue.

Predictive value of hematologic parameters and HALP score for testicular viability in adults with testicular torsion: A multicentric study.

Objectives: To evaluate the predictivity of haematologic parameters and HALP score on testicular viability in adults with testicular torsion.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 139 men ≥18 years of age who underwent testicular detorsion with fixation (n = 90) or orchiectomy (n = 49) due to testicular torsion in five different tertiary centers between May 2019 and August 2023. Demographic, pre-, peri- and postoperative data were analyzed.

The one-minute sit-to-stand test is an alternative to the 6-minute walk test in patients with atrial fibrillation: A cross-sectional study and ROC curve analysis.

Background: The one-minute sit-to-stand test (1STST) is an easy-to-administer, space and time-saving test for determining functional exercise capacity in cardiac disease. This study aimed to investigate the 1STST -test-retest reliability and convergent validity and compare its physiological responses to the six-minute walk test (6MWT) in patients with Atrial fibrillation (AF).

Methods: Forty-five patients with AF were included in this study.

The protection afforded by kefir against cyclophosphamide induced testicular toxicity in rats by oxidant antioxidant and histopathological evaluations.

Cyclophosphamide (CTX) is the most commonly used effective alkylating drug in cancer treatment, but its use is restricted because its toxic side effect causes testicular toxicity. CTX disrupts the tissue redox and antioxidant balance and the resulting tissue damage causes oxidative stress. In our study based on this problem, kefir against CTX-induced oxidative stress and testicular toxicity were investigated.

Association of antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation in Escherichia coli ST131/O25b.

Urinary tract infections are becoming difficult to treat every year due to antibiotic resistance. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) isolates pose a threat with a combined expression of multidrug-resistance and biofilm formation. ST131 clone is a high-risk pandemic clone due to its strong association with antimicrobial resistance, which has been reported frequently in recent years.

A study on the efficacy of combined surgery in advanced-stage congenital cholesteatoma with canal-wall-up surgery.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the outcomes of patients with advanced congenital cholesteatoma who underwent microscopic or endoscope-combined Canal Wall Up Tympanomastoidectomy (CWUT) in our clinic and to determine the contribution of endoscope use in reducing recurrence/residual rates.

Methods: In this retrospective study, the data of individuals who underwent microscopic or combined endoscopic surgery between 2008 and 2022 in our clinic were scanned from the database. Demographic data, preoperative computed tomography (CT) findings, preoperative and postoperative hearing results, operation and intraoperative status of the ossicles, duration of surgery, postoperative follow-up period, recurrence and residual disease status during follow-up were investigated.

The Efficacy and Safety of Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery in Elderly Patients: A Propensity Score Matching Study by the RIRSearch Group.

Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) in elderly patients by comparing them with propensity score-matched age-groups.

Methods: Patients who underwent RIRS to treat upper urinary tract stone disease at seven centers were included in the study and were divided into four groups. The age intervals of the patients in group 1, group 2, group 3, and group 4 were 18-29 years old, 30-49 years old, 50-64 years old, and over 65 years old, respectively.

Vascular complications in extremities of physically restrained intensive care unit patients: A prospective, observational study.

Background: Physical restraint is used to prevent agitation, to continue treatments and to ensure safety in intensive care patients. Physical restraint has negative effects on physical and psychological health, and physical restraint should not be used unless necessary.

Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the development of vascular complications in extremities of physically restrained patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) and the associated factors.

Fermented prebiotic and probiotic products with kefir are very important to slow down and prevent the growth of tumors and to treat cancer by stimulating the immune response against tumor cells. Cyclophosphamide (CPx) is widely preferred in cancer treatment but its effectiveness in high doses is restricted because of its side effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of kefir against CPx-induced heart and liver toxicity.

Background: There may be many risk factors for both youth offending and victimization. In our study, we aimed to compare youth offenders and victims in terms of attachment characteristics, emotion regulation, and mind-reading skills.

Methods: This study employed a single-center, cross-sectional, case-control design.

Tranexamic Acid and Tourniquet: Which Combination Reduces Blood Loss Most Effectively?

Background: Blood loss during and after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) can lead to substantial morbidity and the need for blood transfusions. There are several methods to minimize blood loss and decrease transfusion rates in patients undergoing TKA. Tranexamic acid, an antifibrinolytic agent with known efficacy for achieving these goals, is combined with tourniquets to reduce bleeding in arthroplasty surgeries.

Can 3D radiological calculations predict operational difficulties for rectal cancer?: A single center retrospective analysis.

Low anterior resection, performing total mesorectal excision with appropriate pelvic dissection to prevent local recurrence, is probably the most challenging type of surgery in colorectal surgery, especially in a narrow pelvis. In this study, we aimed to predict the operation difficulty of rectal cancer by comparing the operation time with 2D and 3D pelvimetry. Sixty-six patients who underwent total mesorectal excision after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy due to primary rectal cancer located in the middle and lower rectum (10 cm from the anus) were included in the study.

The Association between Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 Levels and Pro-Inflammatory Markers in New-Onset Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Prediabetes.

In this study, we aimed to reveal the pro-inflammatory effects of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (Vit D) deficiency and insufficiency in new-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and prediabetes. We recruited 84 prediabetes patients, 94 new-onset T2DM patients and 113 healthy participants. We measured the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, ferritin, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in the serum of the participants.

Diagnostic Performance Comparison of Liquid-Based Preparation Methods in Thyroid FNAs.

Introduction: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is recognized worldwide as the primary diagnostic method for evaluating thyroid nodules. Samples collected by FNA can be spread directly onto slides, prepared for cell blocks, or processed as liquid-based cytology. Advocates of the traditional smear technique emphasize that background material such as colloid, cell sequencing characteristics in cell clusters, and cellularity is important in cytological diagnosis.

Evaluation of bone marrow findings in hemodialysis patients with erythropoietin-resistant anemia.

Introduction: Treatment with erythropoietin-stimulating agents (ESAs) is widely used in anemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Acquired ESA resistance is an important problem. The aim of this study is to examine the bone marrow findings in hemodialysis patients with ESA-resistant anemia.

Evaluation of Tear Stability and Ocular Surface in Patients Undergoing External Endonasal Dacryocystorhinostomy (EE-DCR) for Primary Acquired Nasolacrimal Duct Occlusion (PANDO).

The aim of our study was to show the changes in ocular surface and tear film parameters of patients who underwent external endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (EE-DCR). For this purpose, tear film break-up time, corneal staining score, ocular surface disease index (OSDI), and Schirmer I test were performed preoperatively and postoperatively. The data obtained were compared with healthy controls.

Biomechanical comparison of three different surgical methods in the surgical treatment of distal tibial metaphyseal fractures. An animal model study.

Background: The aim of this study is to investigate mechanical properties of minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO), supracutaneousplating (SP), and unilateral external fixators (UEF) which can be performed for open tibial fractures.

Methods: An unstable diaphysial tibia fracture was created in 60 fresh sheep tibia specimens by performing an osteotomy at the middle of bones. Specimens were divided into 3 groups.

Anxiety and Depression in Patients with Alopecia Areata in Eskisehir, Turkey.

Background: Conflicting results have emerged in studies conducted to reveal the relationship between alopecia areata (AA) and depression and anxiety. The comorbidity of depression and anxiety in patients with patchy AA who applied to a tertiary care center will be investigated and compared with a healthy control group.

Methods: This study included 86 patients with AA and 85 healthy volunteers.

A biospectroscopic approach toward colorectal cancer diagnosis from bodily fluid samples via ATR-MIR spectroscopy combined with multivariate data analysis.

In this study, a biospectroscopic approach was reported for the detection of spectral changes and biomarkers for the diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CC) cases from different bodily fluids (blood plasma, blood serum, saliva and colonoscopy disinfection/wash fluids) by using attenuated total reflection-mid infrared (ATR-MIR) spectroscopy. To recognize the molecular level changes in the spectral characteristics of CC and their healthy/control (CH) groups, different multivariate data analyses (HCA, LDA, PCA and SIMCA) were successfully performed over the data of ATR-MIR spectroscopy. Two hundred specimens were characterized in detail over the data of spectral regions (4000-650 cm and regions V-XXII).

Optic nerve sheath diameter measurement for prediction of postdural puncture headache.

Purpose: Intracranial hypotension due to cerebrospinal fluid leak is mainly the causal factor for the pathophysiology of postdural puncture headache (PDPH). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurement in predicting the development of PDPH in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia.

Methods: According to the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) physical classification I-III, 83 patients aged 18-65 years scheduled for spinal anesthesia for elective surgery were included in the study.

The present study aims to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of curcumin (CUR), a naturally occurring bioactive component isolated from the root stem of Curcuma longa Linn.

Predicting hospitalization by TAPSE/SPAP and the role of spironolactone in asymptomatic heart failure patients.

To appraise the prediction of tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE)/systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP) with regard to hospitalization and the effect of spironolactone use.
