Systematically tuning and optimizing the properties of synthetic nanographenes (NGs) is particularly important for NG applications in diverse areas. Herein, by devising novel electron donor-acceptor (D-A) type structures, we reported a series of multi-heteroatom-doped NGs possessing an electron-rich chalcogen and electron-deficient pyrimidine or pyrimidinium rings. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigations revealed significantly different physical, optical, and energetic properties compared to the non-doped HBC or chalcogen-doped, non-D-A analogues.

Pyrroloindolines are important structural units in nature and the pharmaceutical industry, however, most approaches to such structures involve transition-metal or photoredox catalysts. Herein, we describe the first tandem SET/radical cyclization/intermolecular coupling between 2-azaallyl anions and indole acetamides. This method enables the transition-metal-free synthesis of C3a-substituted pyrroloindolines under mild and convenient conditions.

The development of non-alternant nanographenes has attracted considerable attention due to their unique photophysical properties. Herein, we reported a novel aza-doped, non-alternant nanographene (NG) 1 by embedding the cycl[2,2,4]azine unit into the benzenoid NG framework. Single-crystal X-ray diffractometry suggests saddle or twisted nonplanar geometry of the entire backbone of 1 and coplanar conformation of the cycl[2,2,4]azine unit.

A series of chalcogen-doped nanographenes (NGs) and their oxides are described. Their molecular design is conceptually based on the insertion of different chalcogens into the hexa--hexabenzocoronene (HBC) backbone. All the NGs adopt nonplanar conformations, which would show better solubility compared to planar HBC.

Metal ion capacitors have gained a lot of interest as a new kind of capacitor-battery hybrid energy storage system because of their high power density while maintaining energy density and a long lifetime. Potassium ion hybrid capacitors (PIHCs) have been suggested as possible alternatives to lithium-ion/sodium-ion capacitors because of the plentiful potassium supplies, and their lower standard electrode potential and low cost. However, due to the large radius of the potassium ion, PIHCs also face unsatisfactory reaction kinetics, low energy density, and short lifespan.

Key Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry for Natural Resource, Ministry of Education, Yunnan Provincial Center for Research & Development of Natural Products, School of Chemical Science and Technology, Yunnan University Kunming 650091 P. R. China

A reasonable synthesis design by strategically integrating functional group manipulation into the ring system construction resulted in a short, enantioselective, gram-scale total synthesis of (-)-zephyranthine. The concise route includes a catalytic Michael/Michael cascade for the asymmetric synthesis of a penta-substituted cyclohexane with three contiguous stereogenic centers, a remarkable 8-step one-pot operation to easily assemble the zephyranthine tetracyclic skeleton, the regioselective construction of a double bond in the C ring and an asymmetric dihydroxylation. This synthesis is also flexible and paves a potential path to a variety of cyclohexylamine-fused tricyclic or polycyclic alkaloids.

Graphitic carbon nitride, as a very promising two-dimensional structure host for single atom catalysts (SACs), has been studied extensively due to its significant confinement effects of single atoms for photocatalytic applications. In this work, a systematic investigation of g-CN confining noble metal single atoms (NM@g-CN) will be performed by using DFT calculations. The geometric structure calculations indicate that the most favorable anchored sites for the NM is located in the six-fold cavity, and the deformed wrinkle space of g-CN helps the NM to be stabilized in the six-fold cavity.

A unique C(sp)-H/C(sp)-H dehydrocoupling of -benzylimines with saturated heterocycles is described. Using super electron donor (SED) 2-azaallyl anions and aryl iodides as electron acceptors, single-electron-transfer (SET) generates an aryl radical. Hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from saturated heterocycles or toluenes to the aryl radical generates alkyl radicals or benzylic radicals, respectively.

α-Terpineol (1), the main volatile constituent in some traditional Chinese medicines, has been reported to be metabolized to 4-oleuropeic acid by the larvae of common cutworms. The present study verified that α-terpineol could be converted to 4-oleuropeic acid (2) and (1,2,4)--menthane-1,2,8-triol (3) by fermentation. Using shortened fermentation times, 7-hydroxy-α-terpineol (2a) was identified as an oxidative intermediate, which was consistent with the hypothesis put forward by previous studies.
