The red-wing fish (), an endangered species native to Yunnan, is endemic to Chenghai Lake. The natural population of this species has suffered a sharp decline due to the invasion of alien fish species. Fortunately, the artificial domestication and reproduction of have been successful and this species has become an economic species locally.

Regan 1906 is a member of the family Nemacheilidae, Cypriniformes, and native loach in Yunnan. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Regan 1906 was firstly reported and analyzed. The mitogenome of Regan 1906 is 16,566 bp in length, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), and one control region (D-loop).

Article Synopsis
  • * The researchers sequenced 89 new and 20 existing mitochondrial genomes from 13 species, uncovering eight distinct clades and revealing previously underestimated species diversity through molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs).
  • * A time-calibrated phylogenetic tree estimated the common ancestor of this group to be around 37.61 million years old, with significant dispersal events and evolutionary changes influenced by past ecological events and geographical shifts.

The post-release performance of cultured fish is crucial for understanding the viability of cultured fish and assessing the effects of stock enhancement programs. This study aimed to investigate the initial post-release performance of cultured juveniles by examining their movement, spatial distribution, gut fullness, and gut microbiota in nature. In July 2022, a total of 20,000 juveniles, tagged with visible implant fluorescence (VIE), were released into Qilu Lake, a shallow lake in southwestern China.

Catfish (Siluriformes) are one of the most diverse vertebrate orders and are characterized by whisker-like barbels, which are important sensory organs in most of teleosts. However, their specific biological functions are still unclear. Red-tail catfish (Hemibagrus wyckioides) is well-known catfish species with four pairs of barbels, of which the maxillary barbels reach two-thirds of the body length.

In this study, the whole mitochondrial genome of was reported to be 16,518 bp in length, including 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs, and one control region. The phylogenetic analysis based on 13 protein-coding genes showed that was sister to clade of and . A total of 81 bases differences were identified in COI barcoding region, which could be used for species identification in catfish.

Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) cause a high mortality disease which brings substantial economic losses to the mandarin fish culture industry in China. This study was aimed at optimizing the efficacy of a SWCNTs-based immersion subunit vaccine (SWCNTs-M-MCP) which as a promising vaccine against ISKNV. Mandarin fish were vaccinated by immersion, then we designed an orthogonal experiment to optimize different parameters affecting vaccination such as immune duration of bath immunization, immune dose, and fish density when immunized.

Sexual dimorphism is widespread in fish species. The red-tail catfish (Mystus wyckioides) is a commercially important catfish in the lower reaches of the Lancang River and the Mekong basin, and it shows a growth advantage in males. Here, RNA-seq was for the first time used to explore the gene expression difference between the sexes in the hypothalamus and pituitary of red-tail catfish, respectively.
