Fetal haemoglobin and oxygen requirement in preterm infants: an observational study.

Arch Dis Child Fetal Neonatal Ed

September 2024

Department of Clinical Sciences Lund, Paediatrics, Lund University, Skane University Hospital, Lund, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the fraction of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) relates to oxygen needs in very preterm infants, focusing on the relationship between HbF, fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO), and alveolar-arterial gradient (A-a gradient).
  • Conducted in a neonatal intensive care unit in southern Sweden, the longitudinal observational study analyzed data from 440 preterm infants born before gestational week 30 between 2009 and 2015.
  • Results indicate that lower HbF levels are linked to higher FiO and A-a gradients, suggesting that increased oxygen exposure may contribute to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in these infants.

Somatostatin receptor positron emission tomography with computerised tomography imaging (SRI) has a high sensitivity for the detection of small intestinal neuroendocrine tumors (siNET), which makes it ideal for follow-up. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether follow-up with SRI in patients with siNET led to any change in the treatment of the patient and if patient and/or tumour factors were associated with such change. Adults with siNET who had undergone at least two SRI scans between 2013 and 2021 were identified.

Background: Sweden recently adopted new labor induction guidelines lowering the threshold for post-term pregnancies to 41+ weeks. Despite evidence-based foundation, these guidelines stirred controversy among maternity care professionals, who voiced concerns about potential risks and unintended consequences, such as a rising Caesarean section rate. Midwives also highlighted potential impacts on their roles, workload, and working environment; implications that could affect obstetricians and gynecologists as well.

Background: Well-established associations exist between the risk of small for gestational age (SGA) and unidimensional sociodemographic factors. We investigated social inequalities in SGA risk and adopted an intersectional approach that simultaneously considers different social categories. By doing so, we could assess heterogeneities in SGA risk within unidimensional sociodemographic categories.

Personality traits and decision-making styles among obstetricians and gynecologists managing childbirth emergencies.

Sci Rep

April 2023

Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Clinical Sciences Lund, Lund University, BMC C14, 221 84, Lund, Sweden.

The successful management of a childbirth emergency will be dependent on the decision-making of involved obstetricians and gynecologists. Individual differences in decision-making may be explained through personality traits. The objectives of the present study were (I) to describe personality trait levels of obstetricians and gynecologists and (II) to examine the relationship between obstetricians' and gynecologists' personality traits and decision-making styles (Individual, Team and Flow) in childbirth emergencies; also controlling for cognitive ability (ICAR-3), age, sex and years of clinical experience.

National Knowledge-Driven Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea-The Swedish Approach.

Diagnostics (Basel)

March 2023

Center for Sleep and Wake Disorders, Institute of Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg University, 405 30 Gothenburg, Sweden.

Introduction: This paper describes the development of "Swedish Guidelines for OSA treatment" and the underlying managed care process. The Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) is traditionally used as a single parameter for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity classification, although poorly associated with symptomatology and outcome. We instead implement a novel matrix for shared treatment decisions based on available evidence.

Introduction: Fetal growth restriction is a major risk factor for adverse perinatal outcome. As most of the growth-restricted fetuses are small for gestational age (SGA), an efficient antenatal screening method for SGA fetuses would have a major impact on perinatal health. The aim of this study was to compare the SGA prediction rate achieved with third-trimester routine ultrasound estimation of fetal weight (EFW) with that obtained using ultrasound examination on indication.

For the most important and well-known infections spread by ticks, Lyme borreliosis (LB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), there are recommendations for diagnosis and management available from several health authorities and professional medical networks. However, other tick-borne microorganisms with potential to cause human disease are less known and clear recommendations on diagnosis and management are scarce. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of published studies and reviews focusing on evaluation of laboratory methods for clinical diagnosis of human tick-borne diseases (TBDs), other than acute LB and TBE.
