Diabetic peripheral arterial disease in COVID-19 pandemic.

J Res Med Sci

July 2024

Division of Molecular Medicine, Laboratory for Advanced Genomics, Ruder Boskovic Institute, Zagreb, Croatia.

Both diabetes and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) have complex interactions with COVID-19. PAD is one of the most important underlying factors in the development of diabetic foot. The COVID-19 pandemic has also caused an increase in cardiovascular complications in those with chronic diseases, including diabetics, due to both the thrombophilic course of the viral disease and the lockdown measures applied for prevention.

Objectives: To evaluate the clinical results of a new trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) with sinusoidal design by comparing with a traditional trifocal IOL.

Materials And Methods: A total of 79 patients undergoing uneventful microincisional cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of one of two types of trifocal IOLs, the Acriva Trinova IOL (VSY) or Acrysof IQ PanOptix IOL (Alcon), were enrolled in this prospective study. Visual and refractive outcomes, contrast sensitivity (CS), and defocus curve were assessed at 3 months after surgery.

This study sought to evaluate the relationship between infection and traditional and nontraditional lipid parameters, including atherogenic index of plasma, cardiogenic risk ratio, atherogenic coefficient and remnant cholesterol. After the application of exclusion criteria, 309 patients were allocated according to the absence (n = 52) or presence (n = 257) of infection. Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) levels were nonsignificantly higher, and HDL-C levels were nonsignificantly lower, in the -infected patient group.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the impact of radiation on the bone development of rat fetuses and how melatonin might protect against these effects, using 15 pregnant Wistar albino rats divided into four groups.
  • Results showed that fetuses in the radiation group had significantly lower weights and skeletal development compared to the control, with reduced mineral content observed in bone samples.
  • The findings suggest that melatonin may offer protective effects against radiation-induced bone development issues in fetuses, contributing to limited existing research on this topic.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the rate of decline in serum estradiol (E2) levels between hCG injection and the day of embryo transfer (ET) on the success of assisted reproductive technology (ART) in women with infertility of different etiologies.

Materials And Methods: Women 20-45 years of age who underwent a standard GnRH antagonist or long agonist protocol and fresh ET during day 3 of their first ART cycle were included. Group 1 was diagnosed with low ovarian reserve, group 2 comprised high ovarian responders, and group 3 consisted of normal responders.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how children's level of insight affects their obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related psychiatric features.
  • Findings showed a high prevalence of OCD in first-born children, with low insight linked to intellectual disabilities and high insight associated with other OCD spectrum disorders.
  • The research concluded that understanding pediatric OCD is complicated by the level of insight, suggesting that insight should be viewed on a spectrum rather than as a fixed trait.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the effectiveness of two treatment methods—volar radius locking plate (VLP) and K-wire augmented bridging external fixator (BEF)—for intra-articular distal radius fractures in 162 patients from May 2016 to January 2019.
  • The results showed that while both methods produced successful outcomes, VLP provided significantly better results in terms of joint range of motion (ROM) and had lower complication rates compared to the BEF group.
  • Radiological measurements indicated VLP had superior radial inclination and length, but BEF showed a shorter healing time, highlighting differences in recovery between the two methods.
