Article Synopsis
  • Ischemia and reperfusion (IR) lead to oxidative stress and excitotoxicity, major factors in neuronal death in the brain, and hyperthermia worsens this damage.
  • A study conducted on gerbils showed that hyperthermic conditions resulted in earlier neuronal death after IR injury compared to normothermic conditions, with significant increases in oxidative stress markers.
  • The research indicated that hyperthermia amplifies neuronal damage in the hippocampal CA1 region by enhancing oxidative stress and excitotoxicity, as evidenced by changes in various protein levels and cell responses.

Article Synopsis
  • Multipurpose halls need to optimize reverberation time (RT) for different types of performances, which can be difficult to achieve.
  • The study examined five halls to see how sound-absorbing devices affect RTs and used computer simulations to analyze acoustic changes.
  • It was found that applying resonant-type sound-absorbing devices could create significant RT variation in lower frequencies, while porous-type devices improved high-frequency absorption, suggesting a mix of devices is necessary for effective sound management.

Traditional Korean fermented soy paste (doenjang) has various health benefits; however, its intense umami flavor might interfere with global acceptance. Herbs-supplemented (HS) doenjang, coriander (CS), Korean mint (KMS), and peppermint (PMS), during fermentation was evaluated for its organoleptic properties. The levels of most free amino acids in HS doenjang, known to impart intense flavor, were decreased, including aspartic acid and glutamine.

Aim: To study the use of a quasi-experimental design to assess the effects of scaling reimbursement policies on the incidence of chronic-periodontitis procedures.

Materials And Methods: Interrupted time series analysis was used to compare the effects before and after policy implementation using data on the number of periodontitis-related procedures from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (n = 740,467) and the Health Screening Cohort (n = 337,904). Periodontitis-related procedures with diagnosis codes were categorized into basic (scaling or root planing), intermediate (subgingival curettage) and advanced (tooth extraction, periodontal flap surgery, bone grafting for alveolar bone defects or guided tissue regeneration).

Background: The prevalence of hearing loss is increasing annually and has a strong relationship with oral health. However, existing research on hearing loss is limited to children, making it necessary to expand the analysis to adults. Therefore, this study aims to identify differences in oral health-related factors according to hearing loss in adults over 40 years of age using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

This research examines the low rate of co-administration of influenza and COVID-19 vaccines among seniors aged 65 and older in Korea, despite recommendations from authorities and academia worldwide. The study aimed to understand the influence of general characteristics and health beliefs on the vaccination choices of seniors, who were categorized into four groups based on their vaccination status: influenza only, COVID-19 only, both, or neither. A total of 400 participants, aged 65 and above, were selected through proportional stratified random sampling from five major Korean regions for a survey conducted between November 24th and December 15th, 2023.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted human life, posing serious physical and psychological threats, particularly to the elderly. While individuals of all ages are susceptible to contracting COVID-19, older people face a heightened risk of developing various diseases due to age-related immunophysiological changes and preexisting health conditions. The interplay between immune health and physical activity is believed to hold even greater significance during a pandemic.

In this study, waxy corn starch was modified with 230 U or 460 U of amylosucrase (AS) from (NP) to elongate the glucan. The amylose content of the AS-modified starches was determined using iodine and concanavalin A (Con A) methods, and their in vivo digestion, thermal, swelling, and pasting properties were evaluated. The amylose content of AS-treated starches was not significantly different ( > 0.

Porphyran, a sulfated polysaccharide found in various species of marine red algae, has been demonstrated to exhibit diverse bioactivities, including anti-inflammatory effects. However, the protective effects of porphyran against cerebral ischemia and reperfusion (IR) injury have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to examine the neuroprotective effects of porphyran against brain IR injury and its underlying mechanisms using a gerbil model of transient forebrain ischemia (IR in the forebrain), which results in pyramidal cell (principal neuron) loss in the cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) subregion of the hippocampus on day 4 after IR.

Scalp-related symptoms such as dandruff and itching are common with diverse underlying etiologies. We previously proposed a novel classification and scoring system for scalp conditions, called the scalp photographic index (SPI); it grades five scalp features using trichoscopic images with good reliability. However, it requires trained evaluators.

Aucubin, an iridoid glycoside, possesses beneficial bioactivities in many diseases, but little is known about its neuroprotective effects and mechanisms in brain ischemia and reperfusion (IR) injury. This study evaluated whether aucubin exhibited neuroprotective effects against IR injury in the hippocampal CA1 region through anti-inflammatory activity in gerbils. Aucubin (10 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally once a day for one week prior to IR.

Background: The optimal frequency for hemodialysis in older adults with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) has not been established. This study aims to investigate whether a twice-weekly dialysis schedule using an incremental approach can reduce hospitalization rates in the elderly with incident dialysis, compared with conventional thrice-weekly dialysis.

Methods: We have designed a pragmatic randomized controlled trial to compare the effects of twice-weekly versus thrice-weekly hemodialysis in 428 ESKD individuals (dropout rate 20%) aged 60 years or older with residual kidney function (urine output, >500 mL/ day).
