Herbal medicine (Hepad) prevents dopaminergic neuronal death in the rat MPTP model of Parkinson's disease.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. The purpose of this study was to examine neuroprotective effects of Hepad S1, an herbal medicine used for the treatment of PD, in and models of PD.

Methods: Differentiated neuronal PC12 cells underwent a cytotoxicity assay and oxidative stress analysis including DCF-DA staining, glutathione, and malondialdehyde, after exposure to 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridium (MPP+).
