The clinical evolution and management of a 22-yr-old male envenomed by a captive female inland taipan, Oxyuranus microlepidotus (McCoy, 1879), Elapidae, at a public educational reptile exhibit (Florida, USA) is reported. The patient was bitten (quick 'bite and release') in the right hand between digits #3 and 4 while performing captive maintenance. The victim did not attempt any first aid, but urgently presented to the local hospital within 25 mins post-bite.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-front-fanged snakes (NFFS) have been largely neglected in snake venom research, leading to unclear assessments of their medical significance for human bites.
  • The review focuses on European NFFS, highlighting that while most bites cause mild symptoms, the genus Malpolon can result in more severe local and systemic effects.
  • It emphasizes the importance of professional medical evaluation for any bite from these snakes to ensure safety and aid in understanding their potential risks.

Article Synopsis
  • The genus Latrodectus includes 35 widow spider species, known for causing severe envenoming symptoms, referred to as latrodectism, which can result in pain, autonomic issues, and rare complications like myocarditis.
  • A case involving a 34-year-old woman envenomed by a red-back spider (L. hasselti) highlighted typical symptoms such as prolonged pain and edema, alongside mild hypertension and other non-specific issues.
  • Treatment with red-back spider antivenom was effective, but the case raised discussion on the complexities of differentiating venom effects from allergic reactions in patients with prior exposure.

Article Synopsis
  • Concerns about the medical risks posed by Montpellier snakes, particularly the Western Montpellier snake (Malpolon monspessulanus), have been discussed for over a century, but only a few documented cases exist.
  • A recent case involving a bite from the Eastern Montpellier snake (Malpolon insignitus) in Iran resulted in moderate localized symptoms, such as sharp pain and swelling, but the bite resolved fully in five days with no lasting effects.
  • The majority of envenomings from Malpolon species are supportive in nature, with most reported cases showing only mild to moderate local reactions and rare systemic complications, like neurotoxicity, requiring more serious medical attention.

We describe species richness patterns of venomous snakes in Iran in order to produce snakebite risk prediction maps and identify gaps in regional health care centers capable of managing snakebites. We digitized distribution maps from the literature, Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), and the results of our own field studies of 24 terrestrial venomous snake species (including 4 endemic to Iran). Species richness patterns were associated with eight environmental factors.

This study follows 70 children determined to have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) before age three (Time 1). Parents filled out questionnaires and standardized measures about their child when he/she was school-aged (Time 2), including information about their children's preschool, kindergarten, and grade school educational settings. At Time 2, the researchers placed children in three diagnostic groups of No ASD, ASD-Higher Functioning, and ASD-Lower Functioning.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects individuals across all racial and ethnic groups, yet rates of diagnosis are disproportionately higher for Black and Hispanic children. Caregivers of children with ASD experience significant stressors, which have been associated with parental strain, inadequate utilization of mental health services and lower quality of life. The family peer advocate (FPA) model has been utilized across service delivery systems to provide family-to-family support, facilitate engagement, and increase access to care.

This paper compares the results of two large-scale studies conducted as part of an ongoing research programme on employers' attitudes towards the employability of persons with severe disabilities--a study of Fortune 500 corporations and a study of employers doing business in New York State. The results indicated that both groups of employers were favourable towards the employability of persons with disabilities. Executives from large national corporations were more favourable than those from the predominantly small companies doing business in New York State.

Nineteen participants in a day treatment program for the developmentally disabled participated in this validation study of facilitated communication (FC). Subjects and facilitators had been involved in FC and judged competent by supervisors of the FC project at the facility. An information-passing design was used requiring short-term recall of one randomly selected stimulus card at a time.

Thirty-three men and women with mental retardation living in the New York metropolitan area (USA), who entered a supported employment programme were followed during their first 9 months in competitive employment. Differences in placement outcomes were consistently associated with gender differences. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of providing employment services to men and women with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

Executives (N = 341) responsible for hiring decisions in Fortune 500 industrial and service corporations returned a mail questionnaire measuring their attitudes toward persons with severe disabilities and their employability. Responses indicated that attitudes were favorable to persons with disabilities and to their employability, both in terms of advantages for the individual and lack of disadvantages for others in the work setting. Significant differences in attitudes existed among subgroups of executives.

There is little information available about the provision of supported employment services for individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic and economic backgrounds. To fill this gap, in relation to the specific experiences of urban youth with mental retardation, we initiated an agency based longitudinal study of our employment training programmes. Data from the first year follow up of 45 young adults with mental retardation is presented.

The immediate and short-term effects of a preplanned, 10-day overnight respite on 14 mothers of school-age and adult children with multiple disabilities were evaluated. Change in maternal mood, well-being, and activity patterns was measured before, during, and after respite. The data indicate that during respite, mothers experienced increased feelings of well-being and less depressed mood.

A mail survey of the largest businesses in the US, the Fortune 500 industrial and service corporations, examined the attitudes of personnel and human resource executives towards the employability of persons with severe disabilities and actual corporate practices regarding the employment of persons with disabilities. The 341 executives who responded are found to be favourable to the employment of persons with disabilities, especially if the executives work in corporations that have hired persons with disabilities within the past three years, and/or have had personally good contact with persons with disabilities in the past. Almost two-thirds of the corporations have a policy regarding hiring persons with disabilities; over one-half have hired such persons within the past three years; and over one-third have supported work programmes.
