Breed-specific vertebral heart size and vertebral left atrial size reference intervals in Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, Pugs, and Boston Terriers.

Objective: The investigators sought to reanalyze previously published vertebral heart size (VHS) reference intervals in Yorkshire Terriers (YTs), Pomeranians (POMs), Pugs, and Boston Terriers (BTs).

Methods: The electronic medical records of IDEXX Telemedicine Consultants were searched for YTs, POMs, Pugs, and BTs undergoing radiography between January 1, 2023, and March 31, 2023. Dogs were included if they had 2- or 3-view thoracic radiographs performed and no evidence of cardiopulmonary or systemic disease.

Evaluating the Safety and Effectiveness of Regional Upper GI Bleed Services Through an Outcome-Based Analysis at a Centre in the United Kingdom.

Background The aim of this study was to compare the clinical characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients who presented with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (AUGIB) among two groups of patients who were transferred from local and district hospitals for endoscopy and subsequent management versus direct admissions to the emergency department with AUGIB to the Sheffield University Hospital NHS Trust. Methods We included 259 patients who underwent upper GI endoscopy from April 2018 to March 2022, of whom 29 were transferred and 230 were direct admissions. The analysis focused on demographics, pathological findings, time to endoscopy, blood transfusions, and hospital stay.

Humanising processes after harm part 2: compounded harm experienced by patients and their families after safety incidents.

Background: Healthcare organisations risk harming patients and their families twofold. First, through the physical, emotional and/or financial harm caused by safety incidents themselves, and second, through the organisational response to incidents. The former is well-researched and targeted by interventions.

RAFT Dispersion Polymerization of 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate in Non-polar Media.

We report the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in -dodecane using a poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) precursor at 90 °C. This formulation is an example of polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), which leads to the formation of a colloidal dispersion of spherical PLMA-PHEMA nanoparticles at 10-20% w/w solids. PISA syntheses involving polar monomers in non-polar media have been previously reported but this particular system offers some unexpected and interesting challenges in terms of both synthesis and characterization.

Barriers and facilitators for cardiopulmonary resuscitation discussions with people with heart failure.

Background: Care planning with people with advanced heart failure enables appropriate care, and prevents futile interventions, such as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Aim: To explore what motivates clinicians to conduct, and people with heart failure and their carers, to engage in well-conducted CPR discussions.

Methods: In-depth remote interviews with i) people with heart failure and self-reported daily symptoms (≥ 3 months), ii) informal carers and, iii) clinicians recruited through social media and professional groups, team contacts and snowballing.

Preclinical Experience Using 4D Intracardiac Echocardiography to Guide Cardiac Electrophysiology Procedures.

Introduction: Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) is an essential imaging modality for electrophysiology procedures, allowing intraprocedural monitoring, real-time catheter manipulation guidance, and visualization of complex anatomic structures. Four-dimentional (4D) ICE is the next stage in the evolution of the technology, permitting 360° rotation of the imaging plane, simultaneous multiplanar imaging, and volumetric acquisition, similar to transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). In this study, we report our experience with a novel 4D ICE catheter (NuVision, Biosense Webster) in structural electrophysiology procedures and difficult ventricular ablations in a swine preclinical model.

Longitudinal Measurement Invariance of the Parenting Sense of Competence (PSoC): Evidence to Question Its Use?

Background: This study investigated the factor structure of the parenting sense of competence (PSoC), a measure of parenting self-efficacy, in a sample of parents recruited when their infants were under 2 months old. Due to the lack of longitudinal analysis of the PSoC's factor structure over time, the study sought to establish if the published two-factor structure was consistent over an 18-month period.

Methods: Data collected from 536 parents who had participated in a randomised controlled trial of universal proportionate parenting support, delivered in five sites in England, were subject to confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).

Prevalence of High Fat Sugar Salt Products, Labeling Characteristics, and Categories of Foods Sold within In-Store Restricted Areas: A Survey in 3 UK Supermarkets after the 2022 Implementation of the Food (Promotion and Placement) Regulations.

Background: Regulations restricting the promotion of some less-healthy products high in fat, sugar, or salt (HFSS) within "restricted areas" (RAs) of supermarkets came into force in October 2022 in England.

Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of HFSS products and front-of-pack nutrition labeling (FOPNL) characteristics of foods sold within RAs in a sample of supermarket stores.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey of products in RAs in 3 supermarkets was undertaken from November 2022 to February 2023 using photographs, recording the display of FOPNL.

Recombinant characteristics and pathogenicity of a novel PRRSV variant in weaned piglets derived from recombination of three clinical epidemic strains.

Introduction: The recent emergence of PRRSV strains NADC30 and NADC34, along with their recombination with HP-PRRSV-like strains, has added complexity to PRRS control strategies on swine farms. Given the high variability and recombination potential of PRRSV, continuous monitoring of the virus's clinical epidemiology is essential for effective prevention and control.

Methods: This study isolated a PRRSV variant, designated SDVD-NMG2023, from approximately 65-day-old pigs, showing a mortality rate of around 15% within the herd.

Enzymatically hydrolyzed diet improves growth performance and intestinal microbiome in growing pigs.

Background: The use of enzymes within pig feed can reduce the challenges associated with antibiotic-free animal feeding. However, this enzymatic effect is often limited by the internal and external gut environment. This study aimed to improve diet quality and assess the impact of an enzymatically hydrolyzed diet (EHD) on growth performance, meat quality, and intestinal health in growing pigs.

Protective effect of sub-hypothermic mechanical perfusion combined with membrane lung oxygenation on a yorkshire model of brain injury after traumatic blood loss.

Purpose: To investigate the protective effect of sub-hypothermic mechanical perfusion combined with membrane lung oxygenation on ischemic hypoxic injury of yorkshire brain tissue caused by traumatic blood loss.

Methods: This article performed a random controlled trial. Brain tissue of 7 yorkshire was selected and divided into the sub-low temperature anterograde machine perfusion group (n = 4) and the blank control group (n = 3) using the random number table method.

Plasma treatment is associated with decreased brain lesion and resuscitation requirements after traumatic brain injury in a swine model of prolonged damage-control resuscitation.

Background: Hemorrhage and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are the leading causes of death in trauma. Future military conflicts are likely to be in austere environments, where prolonged damage-control resuscitation (p-DCR) may be required for 72 hours before evacuation. Previous studies showed that early administration of fresh frozen plasma (FFP) during p-DCR can significantly decrease the volume of resuscitation required in models of hemorrhagic shock and also provide neuroprotection after TBI.

Background: Delivery of health and care services using a combination of remote and/or in-person channels and digital and/or traditional tools (Hybrid Service Delivery, HSD) is increasingly seen as a way of improving quality and affordability, improving access, personalisation and sustainability, and reducing inequalities. Across the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector (VCSE), using a combination of remote and/or in-person channels and digital and/or traditional tools (HSD) has enabled the essential provision of services for people who have learning disabilities and/or autistic (LDA). However, it is unclear how different tools and channels have been used, what worked well or not well, for whom, and in what circumstances.

Investigation of functional characteristics of copper/copper oxide nanoparticles synthesized with Moringa oleifera and Musa sps. extracts: in-vitro and porcine study.

The study analyzed the aqueous leaf extracts of Moringa oleifera and Musa sps. for phytochemical components, including flavonoids, sterols, saponins, tannins, and glycosides. The LC-MS analysis revealed gingerol, vicenin-2, caffeic acid, quercetin, and other compounds in the extracts.

Implementation and impact of NHS-funded tobacco dependence services in England: a mixed-method evaluation protocol.

Introduction: Tobacco smoking remains a leading cause of ill-health, premature mortality and a driver of health inequalities. To support smokers in England, a comprehensive approach to treating tobacco dependence is being implemented. This includes offering support to all people admitted to hospitals, as well as women and pregnant people within NHS settings.

Neurodevelopmental disorders in children with cleft lip and palate: a systematic review.

Individuals with orofacial clefts (OFCs) may be at an increased risk of developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This systematic review provides a summary of the most recent data regarding the prevalence of ASD and ADHD in the OFC population and compares this to the general paediatric population. Multiple databases were searched including PubMed/Medline and Embase in July 2024, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024565219).

Post-polypectomy colorectal bleeding: current strategies and the way forward.

Post-endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) bleeding, or clinically significant post-EMR bleeding, is influenced by factors such as polyp size, right-sided colonic lesions, laterally spreading tumors, anticoagulant use, and comorbidities like cardiovascular or chronic renal disease. The optimal prophylactic therapy for post-EMR bleeding remains unknown, with no consensus on specific criteria for its application. Moreover, prophylactic measures, including clipping, suturing, and coagulation, have produced mixed results.

The efficacy of cellulose dressings in burn wound management: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Burn wound management is challenging, especially in paediatric patients when optimising outcomes. Superficial burns are generally managed conservatively with dressings; however, frequent dressing changes can be a source of pain and discomfort. Cellulose dressings mitigate these problems, and current reports in the literature have demonstrated positive outcomes when compared against routine dressing types.

A minimally invasive swine model of chronic kidney disease-associated heart failure.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is on the rise, and over 50% of patients die from cardiac causes. Patients develop heart failure due to unelucidated reno-cardiac interactions, termed type 4 cardiorenal syndrome (CRS4). The aim of this study is to establish and characterize a reliable model of CRS4 in swine with marked cardiac diastolic dysfunction.

Background: The NHS Jewish BRCA Testing Programme is offering germline and genetic testing to people with ≥1 Jewish grandparent. Who have an increased likelihood of having an Ashkenazi Jewish (AJ) founder germline pathogenic variant (gPV) compared with the general population.Testing is offered via a self-referral, home-based saliva sampling pathway, supported by a genetic counsellor telephone helpline.
