Voltage-gated sodium channels, sodium transport and progression of solid tumours.

Sodium (Na) concentration in solid tumours of different origin is highly dysregulated, and this corresponds to the aberrant expression of Na transporters. In particular, the α subunits of voltage gated Na channels (VGSCs) raise intracellular Na concentration ([Na]) in malignant cells, which influences the progression of solid tumours, predominantly driving cancer cells towards a more aggressive and metastatic phenotype. Conversely, re-expression of VGSC β subunits in cancer cells can either enhance tumour progression or promote anti-tumourigenic properties.

Virtual temporal bone simulators and their use in surgical training: a narrative review.

Objective: Temporal bone dissection is a difficult skill to acquire, and the challenge has recently been further compounded by a reduction in conventional surgical training opportunities during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Consequently, there has been renewed interest in ear simulation as an adjunct to surgical training for trainees. We review the state-of-the-art virtual temporal bone simulators for surgical training.

Renal angiomyolipoma: from imaging to intervention.

A high volume of cross-sectional imaging has created a window of opportunity for radiologists to identify renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs). The purpose of this review is to help the reader recognise the spectrum of renal AML appearances using different imaging methods and to gain an understanding of the classic and atypical features for appropriate lesion characterisation. Risk factors for AML growth and rupture will be highlighted.

Training and external validation of pre-treatment FDG PET-CT-based models for outcome prediction in anal squamous cell carcinoma.

The post-operative tonsillectomy (POPT) study: A multi-centre prospective paediatric cohort study.

Background: Abdominal wall hernias (AWH) are frequently large and deforming. Despite this, little is known about how AWH impact upon body image. This study is the first study to qualitatively examine patients' subjective lived experiences of how AWH affects their body image.

Postoperative Staphylococcus aureus Infections in Patients With and Without Preoperative Colonization.

Importance: Staphylococcus aureus surgical site infections (SSIs) and bloodstream infections (BSIs) are important complications of surgical procedures for which prevention remains suboptimal. Contemporary data on the incidence of and etiologic factors for these infections are needed to support the development of improved preventive strategies.

Subacute thyroiditis following Mpox infection in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus.

Summary: Mpox (MPX) formerly known as monkeypox was declared a public health emergency of international concern, following an outbreak that commenced in May 2022. We report a case of subacute thyroiditis following MPX infection. To our knowledge, it is the first documented incidence of this complication in humans.

Developing an application for the UK Pre-Doctoral Clinical and Practitioner Academic Fellowship (PCAF): the collective experience of a community of physiotherapists.

Gastrointestinal surgery in particular was an early adaptor to both laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

Signals of global symmetry are important for abnormality detection in mammograms.

Purpose: Expert radiologists can detect the "gist of abnormal" in bilateral mammograms even three years prior to onset of cancer. However, their performance decreases if both breasts are not from the same woman, suggesting the ability to detect the abnormality is partly dependent on a global signal present across the two breasts. We aim to detect this implicitly perceived "symmetry" signal by examining its effect on a pre-trained mammography model.

Contribution of the Bony Bankart in Calculating Glenoid Bone Loss.
