Salt marshes play an important role in the global nutrient cycle. The sediments in these systems harbor diverse and complex bacterial communities possessing metabolic capacities that provide ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling and removal. On the East Coast of the USA, salt marshes have been experiencing degradation due to anthropogenic stressors.

Many of the world's major cities are located in coastal zones, resulting in urban and industrial impacts on adjacent marine ecosystems. These pressures, which include pollutants, sewage, runoff and debris, temperature increases, hardened shorelines/structures, and light and acoustic pollution, have resulted in new evolutionary landscapes for coastal marine organisms. Marine environmental changes influenced by urbanization may create new selective regimes or may influence neutral evolution via impacts on gene flow or partitioning of genetic diversity across seascapes.

Background: Several approaches are used by blood centers when providing minor (non-ABO/D) antigen-negative RBCs to hospitals. Details vary but include providing results on the unit labeling intended for clinical use without retyping or providing results on packing documents or via computer query requiring confirmation. Recent regulatory changes allow labeling with historical minor antigen results, defined as previously performed by the donor center on two different donations with results linked to the donor and confirmed concordant.

Environmental remediation efforts in low- and middle-income countries have yet to be evaluated for their cost effectiveness. To address this gap we calculate a cost per Disability Adjusted Life Year (DALY) averted following the environmental remediation of the former lead smelter and adjoining residential areas in Paraiso de Dios, Haina, the Dominican Republic, executed from 2009 to 2010. The remediation had the effect of lowering surface soil lead concentrations to below 100 mg/kg and measured geometric mean blood lead levels (BLLs) from 20.

Exploring Skills-Based Competencies Through Geriatric Care Management Modules.

Gerontol Geriatr Educ

a Department of Health and Physical Education & Gerontological Studies and Services , York College-City University of New York, Jamaica , New York , USA.

As educational competencies in gerontology continue to evolve, skills-based competencies (from beginner to expert level) endure as the hallmarks of the field. This study explored the impact of exposure to "active learning" modules for the practice of professional geriatric care management (GCM) on beginning gerontology students and their ability to acquire core knowledge and more advanced skills related to assessment and counseling community-based older adults. Working with a group of "nontraditional" students, many having previous caregiving experience and working with older adults in direct care and allied health care roles, evaluation of these modules show that early exposure to "advanced" professional practice can be an effective approach for introducing higher-level competencies to beginning gerontology students.
