Comparison of triglyceride-glucose index and HOMA-IR for predicting prevalence and incidence of metabolic syndrome.

Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis

March 2022

Department of Family Medicine, Nowon Eulji Medical Center, Eulji University School of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Insulin resistance is related closely to metabolic syndrome (MetS). The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) is the most commonly used insulin resistance index, but the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been suggested as a reliable alternative insulin resistance index. This study aims to compare the predictive powers of TyG index and HOMA-IR for the prevalence and incidence of MetS in a large, community-based, prospective cohort over 12 years of follow-up.

A crude comparison of medical costs between people with disabilities (PWD) and without disabilities (PWoD) shows a much higher expenditure among PWD and such results have been a cause for further stigmatization. This study aims to empirically analyze whether the medical costs for PWD are actually high when characteristics related to medical costs are adjusted. Ten percent of the total population was randomly selected from the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI) Database in 2016.

Despite the increasing transition from paper vouchers to mobile e-vouchers for maternal health in low- and middle-income countries, few studies have reviewed key elements for program planning, implementation, and evaluation. To bridge this gap, this study conducted an interpretive review and developed a logic model for mobile maternal health e-voucher programs. Pubmed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched to retrieve relevant studies; 27 maternal health voucher programs from 84 studies were identified, and key elements for the logic model were retrieved and organized systematically.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the extent of tumor resection (EOR) affects recurrence patterns and prognosis in glioblastoma (GBM) patients, emphasizing the importance of managing the tumor's microenvironment.
  • The analysis included 358 patients and categorized them into three groups based on their EOR: supratotal resection (SupTR), gross-total resection (GTR), and subtotal resection (STR), finding significant differences in local and distant recurrence rates among the groups.
  • The results indicate that patients in the SupTR group experienced lower recurrence rates and significantly better overall survival compared to those in the GTR and STR groups, highlighting the potential benefits of more extensive surgical intervention.

A novel paper MAP method for rapid high resolution histological analysis.

Sci Rep

December 2021

Department of Neurosurgery, Graduate School of Medical Science, Brain Korea 21 Project, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, 03722, Republic of Korea.

Three-dimensional visualization of cellular and subcellular-structures in histological-tissues is essential for understanding the complexities of biological-phenomena, especially with regards structural and spatial relationships and pathologlical-diagnosis. Recent advancements in tissue-clearing technology, such as Magnified Analysis of Proteome (MAP), have significantly improved our ability to study biological-structures in three-dimensional space; however, their wide applicability to a variety of tissues is limited by long incubation-times and a need for advanced imaging-systems that are not readily available in most-laboratories. Here, we present optimized MAP-based method for paper-thin samples, Paper-MAP, which allow for rapid clearing and subsequent imaging of three-dimensional sections derived from various tissues using conventional confocal-microscopy.

Family resilience factors affecting family adaptation of children with cancer: A cross-sectional study.

Eur J Oncol Nurs

February 2022

Department of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Yonsei Cancer Center, Yonsei University Health System, Seoul, South Korea; Department of Pediatrics, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea.

Purpose: Pediatric cancer impacts all family members, including parents and siblings, who strive to adjust to a multitude of changes brought about by the illness. Family resilience is an important factor in the successful adaptation of families of children with cancer. Therefore, we aimed to identify risk and protective factors for family resilience at the child, family, and community levels that affect the adaptation of families of children with cancer.

  • A study investigated the relationship between inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) use and the risk of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 in patients with chronic respiratory diseases.
  • The research analyzed data from nearly 45,000 individuals who were tested for COVID-19, out of which only 2.1% tested positive, and approximately 15.6% had used ICS prior to testing.
  • The findings revealed no significant association between ICS use and increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, regardless of the type or dosage of corticosteroid used.

J Clin Neurosci

February 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Spine and Spinal Cord Institute, College of Medicine, Yonsei University, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

The degenerative changes in the spine of the frail elderly gradually exacerbate the alignment of the spine as the degeneration progresses. This study was conducted to assess the relationship between frailty and spine sagittal alignment measured in terms of global, cervical, thoracic, and lumbo-pelvic parameters. In total, 101 patients aged 75 years and older hospitalized for spine surgery were prospectively enrolled.

The effect of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on changes in the brain structure of firefighters: An analysis using data from the Firefighters Research on Enhancement of Safety & Health study.

Sci Total Environ

April 2022

Department of Preventive Medicine, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea; Institute of Human Complexity and Systems Science, Yonsei University, Incheon, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are formed during incomplete combustion of organic matter, and firefighters are highly exposed to these toxic compounds at fire sites. Exposure to PAHs can cause cognitive decline and neurodegeneration; however, to date, few studies have examined the potential effects of PAH exposure on structural changes in the brain. We aimed to investigate the association between the four types of PAH metabolites and the corresponding changes in neuroimaging markers based on smoking status and hypertension in male firefighters.

Background: Although disclosing the predictors of different behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) is the first step in developing person-centered interventions, current understanding is limited, as it considers BPSD as a homogenous construct. This fails to account for their heterogeneity and hinders development of interventions that address the underlying causes of the target BPSD subsyndromes. Moreover, understanding the influence of proximal factors-circadian rhythm-related factors (ie, sleep and activity levels) and physical and psychosocial unmet needs states-on BPSD subsyndromes is limited, due to the challenges of obtaining objective and/or continuous time-varying measures.
