Purpose: Based on theoretical predictions from human capital theory, the aim of this exploratory study is to analyze the relationship between experimentally elicited, incentivized economic preference parameters, Big Five and Grit personality traits, cognitive ability, and the Alameda Seven lifestyles: smoking, drinking excessively, being overweight or obese, experiencing stress, following a healthy diet, exercising, and sleeping enough. In addition, self-reported general physical and mental health are analyzed.
Materials And Methods: Data collection took place in an incentivized paper-and-pencil experiment.

Computational prediction of drug-target interactions (DTIs) is of particular importance in the process of drug repositioning because of its efficiency in selecting potential candidates for DTIs. A variety of computational methods for predicting DTIs have been proposed over the past decade. Our interest is which methods or techniques are the most advantageous for increasing prediction accuracy.

Functional modules can be predicted using genome-wide protein-protein interactions (PPIs) from a systematic perspective. Various graph clustering algorithms have been applied to PPI networks for this task. In particular, the detection of overlapping clusters is necessary because a protein is involved in multiple functions under different conditions.

Background: Previously, we constructed a deep neural network (DNN) model to estimate low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).
Objective: To routinely provide estimated LDL-C levels, we applied the aforementioned DNN model to an electronic health record (EHR) system in real time (deep LDL-EHR).
Methods: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the Wonju Severance Christian Hospital (WSCH) datasets were used as training and testing datasets, respectively.

Background/aim: Mesenchymal stem cell-based tumor therapy is still limited due to the insufficient secretion of effectors and discrepancies between their in vitro and in vivo efficacy. We investigated whether genetically engineered adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) overexpressing tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) had inhibitory effects on H460 tumor growth both in vitro and in an H460 xenograft model.
Materials And Methods: Genetically engineered adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) overexpressing tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) were obtained from plasmid transfection with pCMV3-TRAIL and -interferon (IFN)-β (producing ASC-TRAIL and ASC-IFN-β, respectively).

Background/aim: Genetic manipulation of stem cells using non-viral vectors is still limited due to low transfection efficiency. We investigated whether the DNA-binding cell-permeation peptides (CPP) can enhance the transfection efficiency of non-viral vectors in adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) and whether ASCs over-expressing TRAIL through CPP can inhibit the growth of glioma U251MG cells in vitro and in vivo.
Materials And Methods: ASCs were genetically engineered to over-express TRAIL by using CPP, pCMV3-TRAIL and lipid-based transfection reagents (X-tremeGENE).

A layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based anticancer delivery system was investigated in terms of crystalline phase, particle size, hydrodynamic radius, zeta potential, etc. through in vitro and in vivo study. Size controlled LDH with anticancer drug methotrexate (MTX) incorporation was successfully prepared through step-by-step hydrothermal reaction and ion-exchange reaction.

Consumption of a Western-type diet has been linked to gut-microbiota-mediated colon inflammation that constitutes a risk factor for colorectal cancer. A high salt diet (HSD) exacerbates IL-17A-induced inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease and other autoimmune diseases. Enterotoxigenic (ETBF) is a gut commensal bacterium and reported to be a potent initiator of colitis via secretion of the toxin (BFT).

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disorder of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by inflammation. Although IBD is usually treated with anti-inflammatory agents, most of these treatments have limited efficacy. Propolis is a viscous mixture that honeybees produce by mixing saliva and honeycomb with exudate gathered from tree buds, sap flows, or other botanical sources.

Backgrounds/aims: This study was performed to reveal the usefulness of the trabecular bone score (TBS) in assessing bone strength in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in comparison with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) methods.
Methods: A total of 215 AS patients (75.8% male) were enrolled from a single university hospital in Korea.

Hypoxia is a condition in which the whole body or a region of the body is deprived of oxygen supply. The brain is very sensitive to the lack of oxygen and cerebral hypoxia can rapidly cause severe brain damage. Astrocytes are essential for the survival and function of neurons.
