Many surgeons have demonstrated the validity of sternocleidomastoid muscle flaps for the reconstruction of head and neck tumors. We present a case in which we used an island sternocleidomastoid muscle flap to reconstruct a cheek depression after excision of a malignant parotid tumor. A 44-year-old woman presented with a right malignant parotid tumor.

Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy for Anterior Cervical Myoma: Possible Significance of Presurgical Assessment by Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Hysterectomy for large uterine anterior cervical myoma is a challenging surgical procedure. We summarize our experience in the management of large uterine anterior cervical myoma. Three patients underwent hysterectomy for uterine anterior cervical myoma with similar sizes and different positions treated by laparoscopic surgery.

Primaquine plus clindamycin as a promising salvage therapy for Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia: A retrospective analysis in Japanese patients.

Treatment of intractable Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) patients with primaquine (PQ) in combination with clindamycin (CLDM) was conducted by the Research Group on Chemotherapy of Tropical Diseases (RG-CTD), as a kind of compassionate use. Primaquine was not nationally licensed at the time but imported by RG-CTD for the use in a clinical research to investigate safety and efficacy in malaria treatment. Eighteen Japanese adult patients thus treated were analyzed.

Pembrolizumab-Induced Severe Neuropathy in a Patient with Metastatic Urothelial Carcinoma after Achieving Complete Response: Guillain-Barré Syndrome-Like Onset.

An 85-year-old female was admitted to our hospital for left ureteral cancer and para-aortic lymph node metastasis. To control hematuria, a laparoscopic retroperitoneal nephroureterectomy was performed, and papillary urothelial carcinoma (pT3b) was found. To treat para-aortic lymph node metastasis, she received chemotherapy with gemcitabine and nedaplatin.

Risk Factors of Coronary Artery Abnormalities and Resistance to Intravenous Immunoglobulin Plus Corticosteroid Therapy in Severe Kawasaki Disease: An Analysis of Post RAISE.

Background: Coronary artery abnormalities (CAAs) still occur in patients with Kawasaki disease receiving intensified treatment with corticosteroids. We aimed to determine the risk factors of CAA development and resistance to intensified treatment in Post RAISE (Prospective Observational Study on Stratified Treatment With Immunoglobulin Plus Steroid Efficacy for Kawasaki Disease)-the largest prospective cohort of Kawasaki disease patients to date.

Methods: In Post RAISE, 2648 consecutive patients with Kawasaki disease were enrolled.

Inflammation is a major hallmark of several cancers. The present study evaluated the prognostic value of the Fibrinogen-Albumin Ratio Index (FARI) at the diagnosis in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia with myelodysplasia-related changes (AML-MRC) treated with azacitidine (AZA). A retrospective study was conducted in a single cohort of 99 patients with de novo MDS and AML-MRC who were treated with AZA between May 2011 and June 2019 in our hospital.

Prognostic impact of geriatric assessment in elderly patients with non-small cell lung cancer: an integrated analysis of two randomized phase III trials (JCOG1115-A).

Objective: Patients' actual age and performance status do not always accurately identify the 'fit elderly' for chemotherapy. This study aimed to determine whether four geriatric assessment tools could predict prognosis.

Methods: This study were analyzed using the data of two randomized phase III trials (JCOG0207 and JCOG0803/WJOG4307L) for elderly patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer and included all eligible patients who were assessed before treatment with four geriatric assessment tools: the Barthel activities of daily living index, Lawton instrumental activities of daily living scale, Mini-Mental State Examination, and Geriatric Depression Scale-15.

Feasibility and safety of total laparoscopic retrograde hysterectomy in a large uterus with obliterated cul-de-sac due to severe endometriosis.

Objective: To examine the safety and feasibility of total laparoscopic retrograde hysterectomy (TLreH) in patients with obliterated cul-de-sac due to severe endometriosis.

Study Design: This retrospective case-control observational study was performed at the Yokohama Municipal Citizen's Hospital between January 2014 and December 2019. Ninety-two women who underwent TLreH and who had uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, or both with obliterated cul-de-sac due to severe endometriosis were enrolled.

Methods: Among 64 specimens obtained by ERBT with bipolar energy from patients with pT1 bladder cancer, MM was detected in 61 specimens. Thus, 61 specimens were included in this retrospective study.

Randomized phase II trial of S-1 plus cisplatin or docetaxel plus cisplatin with concurrent thoracic radiotherapy for inoperable stage III non-small cell lung cancer.

Cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy is considered standard treatment for unresectable locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC). This study examined two regimens of chemotherapy in concurrent chemoradiation. Eligible patients with unresectable, radically irradible LA-NSCLC were randomized to either the SP (S-1 and cisplatin) or DP (docetaxel and cisplatin) arms with concurrent thoracic radiotherapy of 60 Gy, comprising 2 Gy per daily fraction.

Aim: To examine the impact of the tumor marker alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) or PIVKA-II in detecting very small HCC nodules (≤ 2 cm in maximum diameter, Barcelona stage 0) in the large number of very small HCC. The difference in the behavior of these tumor markers in HCC development was also examined.

Background Amrubicin (AMR) is a completely synthetic 9-aminoanthracycline and clinically active against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We conducted a phase I study of AMR and erlotinib (ERL) combination therapy in previously treated patients with advanced NSCLC and have already reported the safety and effectiveness. Methods We conducted a multi-center, single-arm phase II trial to evaluate the efficacy of AMR and ERL combination therapy in patients with previously treated, advanced NSCLC harboring wild-type EGFR, PS 0-1 and < 75 years of age.

Ulcerative colitis-related severe enteritis: an infrequent but serious complication after colectomy.

Background And Aim: After colectomy for ulcerative colitis (UC), very severe and sometimes lethal enteritis can develop. However, the clinical features remain uncertain because of the low incidence, diversity of symptoms, and undefined diagnostic criteria. The aim of this study was to define postoperative ulcerative colitis-related severe enteritis (UCRSE) and to investigate its clinical features.

Status of fracture risk assessment and osteoporosis treatment in Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) at a high risk of major osteoporosis (OP)-related fractures and the status of OP-related medical treatment for these patients.

A 37-year-old man who had been on bromvalerylurea (BU) medication for 11 years at a maximum dose of 2,400 mg per day for headache therapy was admitted to our hospital due to gait disturbance. He had weight loss and exanthema all over his body. Cognitive dysfunction, intellectual deterioration, attention disturbance, decreased muscle strength, and decreased vibratory sense in the lower limbs were observed.

Veno-arterio-pulmonary-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in descending aortic surgery.

Hypoxia during one-lung ventilation is a significant problem in descending aortic surgery via left thoracotomy. Veno-arterio-pulmonary-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VAPa-ECMO), which consists of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) and an additional arterial branch to perfuse a pulmonary artery (Pa), is useful.

The EUTOS long-term survival score predicts disease-specific mortality and molecular responses among patients with chronic myeloid leukemia in a practice-based cohort.

The European Treatment and Outcome Study (EUTOS) long-term survival (ELTS) score predicts disease-specific death in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) being treated with imatinib during the chronic phase (CP) of the disease. However, it is unclear whether the ELTS score predicts CML-related events or treatment responses. This study evaluated the predictive value of the ELTS score regarding prognosis and treatment response in patients with CML-CP.

[Multicenter Follow-up Survey on Radiation Dose Levels in Cardiovascular X-ray Apparatus under Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Conditions].

It is important to optimize the exposure dose when conducting interventional radiology, but optimization is difficult for medical centers to achieve independently. In 2005, we administered a questionnaire on the measurement of dose rates and awareness of exposure reduction when performing percutaneous coronary intervention. Ten years later, we conducted a follow-up survey of the same 31 centers to determine the current situation and identify trends.
