Background: The standard of care for placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) includes a real-time ultrasound (US)-guided technique. We describe a rare case in which the guidewire penetrated the posterior wall of the vessel, forming a knot, which precluded simple removal. This occurred despite the procedure being performed under real-time US guidance.

The clinical significance of FOLFOXIRI (5-FU, leucovorin, oxaliplatin, and irinotecan) plus anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody using cetuximab for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) remains controversial. We report results from a randomized phase 2 DEEPER trial (UMIN000018217, jRCTs061180022) to test the superiority of modified (m)-FOLFOXIRI plus weekly cetuximab over bevacizumab in patients with RAS wild-type (wt) mCRC. Primary endpoint was depth of response (DpR).

Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples are important for genomic analysis of thyroid carcinomas, particularly for various molecularly targeted therapies. Therefore, this study developed and validated a technique for preparing FFPE tissue samples that preserves nucleic acid quality, which is fundamental for precise genomic analysis, more effectively than conventional methods. We analyzed surgically resected thyroid gland tumors, lymph node metastases, and separately fixed tumor samples to optimize formalin fixation and assess the influence of specimen type and preparation methods on nucleic acid quality.

Aim: Gastric cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortalities worldwide. According to the pathological TNM classification, T3N0M0, Stage IIA gastric cancer has been excluded from the S-1 adjuvant chemotherapy trials. Thus, the clinical impact of S-1 adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with pathological T3N0M0 cancer and the associated prognostic factors have not been elucidated.

Background Aims: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) improves outcomes for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients, but relapse rates remain high, and postrelapse treatment options are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the factors contributing to the response to donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI) in relapsed MDS patients post-HSCT.
Methods: This study included 107 patients with relapsed and DLI-treated MDS who underwent their first HSCT between 2002 and 2022 and were registered in the Transplant Registry Unified Program.

: A combination of elotuzumab, pomalidomide, and dexamethasone (EPd) was approved for the treatment of relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) following the ELOQUENT-3 phase II clinical trial. However, the clinical experience with this therapy is still limited. In this retrospective study, we analyzed the efficacy and safety of EPd in a real-world cohort of RRMM patients.

We report the case of a 51-year-old Japanese man with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) initially diagnosed in the chronic phase. For 16 years, the patient maintained chronic phase (CP) under treatment with first- and second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), including imatinib, dasatinib, and bosutinib, none of which resulted in ABL1 mutations. However, despite long-term disease stability, the patient experienced an abrupt progression to the megakaryocytic blast phase (MBP), a rare and aggressive form of CML.

Background: Minimally invasive thoracic surgical techniques require effective lung isolation using one-lung ventilation (OLV). Verification of lung isolation may be confirmed by auscultation, visual confirmation using fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB), or more recently, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). The aim of this study was to prospectively compare lung ultrasound with clinical auscultation to confirm OLV before thoracic surgery in pediatric patients.

Introduction: There have been few reports of patients for whom a cancer gene panel test for solid tumors revealed the simultaneous presence of BRCA mutation and microsatellite instability (MSI)-high status. BRCA mutations have been reported in 13% of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) patients, and 3.1% of prostate cancer cases are MSI-high/mismatch repair deficient.

Narrow-band imaging combined with magnified endoscopy has enabled the detection of superficial squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SSCCHN) that has been resected with minimally invasive treatment, preserving vocalization and swallowing functions. However, risk factors of lymph node metastasis (LNM) must be identified, as some patients with LNM have a poor prognosis. From an initial 599 patients with 700 lesions who underwent trans-oral surgery in 27 Japanese hospitals (a nationwide registration survey), we enrolled 541 patients with 633 SSCCHNs, as indicated by central pathological diagnoses.
