The bone is the main storage site for Ca and Mg ions in the mammalian body. Although investigations into Ca signaling have progressed rapidly and led to better understanding of bone biology, the Mg signaling pathway and associated molecules remain to be elucidated. Here, we investigated the role of a potential Mg signaling-related lysosomal molecule, two-pore channel subtype 2 (TPC2), in osteoclast differentiation and bone remodeling.

Nonepisodic angioedema with eosinophilia (NEAE) is a rare allergic disease with a young Japanese and East Asian female predominance. NEAE features transient, nonrecurrent angioedema and peripheral blood eosinophilia without visceral organ involvement. Angioedema in NEAE occurs on the extremities, while the trunk and face are rarely involved.

This report presents a verapamil-sensitive atrial tachycardia, mid-atrium septum activating the earliest. Concealed entrainment was obtained at noncoronary aortic sinus (NCS), where the local activation was delayed compared to mid-septum. The tachycardia was successfully ablated at NCS.

Introduction: Loading stress due to individual variations in femoral morphology is thought to be strongly associated with the pathogenesis of atypical femoral fracture (AFF). In Japan, studies on AFF regarding pathogenesis in the mid-shaft are well-documented and a key factor in the injury is thought to be femoral shaft bowing deformity. Thus, we developed a CT-based finite element analysis (CT/FEA) model to assess distribution of loading stress in the femoral shaft.

The aim of this study was to clarify the incidences of and the risk factors for severe retinopathy requiring photocoagulation therapy and albuminuria in Japanese patients with childhood-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus. A total of 756 patients from a cohort study by the Japanese Study Group of Insulin Therapy for Childhood and Adolescent Diabetes were included in the study. Patients were registered in 1995 or 2000, and HbAwas measured every 4 months and analyzed in central hospital for an average of 6 years.

Background: Lowering cholesterol levels decreases the risk of atherosclerotic diseases. Effective ways to stably reduce LDL-C level are warranted in type 2 diabetic patients, a high-risk population for CVD, with various anti-diabetic therapeutic background. The RESEARCH study focuses on LDL-C reduction in this population along with modifications of the lipid profiles.

Purpose: To establish a method by which angiography of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) can be performed smoothly, we investigated the relative locations of the coeliac trunk (CT), superior mesenteric artery (SMA), IMA, and left renal artery (LtRA).

Methods: From a total of 60 cadavers, 32 cadavers with few arteriosclerotic lesions and little vascular tortuosity were selected for the study. The abdominal aorta (Ao) were removed and incised on both lateral side, along the vertical axis and transected into the ventral and dorsal sides.

Article Synopsis
  • Mutations in genes associated with neonatal diabetes and maturity-onset diabetes have been found in children with autoantibody-negative type 1 diabetes (T1D).
  • In a study of 89 children, researchers identified 11 cases with significant genetic mutations and confirmed the absence of copy-number abnormalities.
  • The findings suggest a genetic overlap between autoantibody-negative T1D and monogenic diabetes, highlighting that mutation carriers generally have comparable health profiles to non-carriers, except for having a normal BMI at diagnosis.

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is classified into five variants, with the collapsing variant being the most rare. Collapsing FSGS is characterized by a black racial predominance and is often associated with human immunodeficiency virus-associated nephropathy. However, the number of idiopathic cases is increasing and the presentation of non-black patients becoming more routine.

Background: When drug-induced coronary spasm provocation tests are performed, a washout period of >48h for calcium channel blockers (CCBs) is uniformly recommended. However, each CCB has a distinct half-life, and little is known about the influence of prior oral administration of CCBs on acetylcholine provocation test to evaluate coronary vasomotor reaction.

Methods And Results: We examined 245 consecutive patients with suspected vasospastic angina who had undergone acetylcholine provocation test.

This case highlights the probable association of significantly displaced posterior first-rib fracture and jagged edges of the fracture line following blunt chest trauma with delayed ipsilateral subclavian artery rupture. Early angiography and first-rib repair should promptly be considered under such circumstances.

Introduction: Postintensive care syndrome (PICS) is defined as a new or worsening impairment in cognition, mental health and physical function after critical illness. There is little evidence regarding treatment of patients with PICS; new directions for effective treatment strategies are urgently needed. Early physiotherapy may prevent or reverse some physical impairments in patients with PICS, but no systematic reviews have investigated the effectiveness of early rehabilitation on PICS-related outcomes.

In 2013, a guideline for occupational allergic diseases was published for the first time in Japan. Occupational allergic diseases are likely to worsen or become intractable as a result of continuous exposure to high concentrations of causative antigens, and are socioeconomically important diseases with which the patients might sometimes lose jobs due to work interruptions. Guidelines for occupational allergic diseases have been published in many countries.

Background: Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SMX/TMP) is a standard drug for the prophylaxis of Pneumocystis pneumonia (PJP) in immunosuppressed patients with systemic rheumatic diseases, but is sometimes discontinued due to adverse events (AEs). The objective of this non-blinded, randomized, 52-week non-inferiority trial was to quest an effective chemoprophylaxis regimen for PJP with a low drug discontinuation rate. Results at week 24 were reported.

Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Medical Research Institute, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan.

Osteoporosis is one of the most prevalent ageing-associated diseases that are soaring in the modern world. Although various aspects of the disease have been investigated to understand the bases of osteoporosis, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying bone loss is still incompletely understood. Poldip2 is a molecule that has been shown to be involved in cell migration of vascular cells and angiogenesis.
