Rationale: Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a well-recognized, but uncommon complication in patients with kidney transplantation, which poses challenges in diagnosis and poor prognosis due to its low incidence and nonspecific clinical manifestations. As a routine follow-up examination method for kidney transplant patients, ultrasound (US) plays a significant role in the diagnosis of PTLD. Therefore, it is critical to evaluate the ultrasonic characteristics of PTLD in transplanted kidney patients for early detection and diagnosis.

Introduction: Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) shows great potential for preventing vascular dementia (VD). However, the blood‒brain barrier (BBB) and low bioavailability of bFGF in vivo limit its application. The present study investigated how nasal administration of bFGF-loaded nanoliposomes (bFGF-lips) affects the impaired learning and cognitive function of VD mice and the underlying mechanism involved.

Circular RNA (circRNA) is a novel type of RNA that plays an important role in the occurrence and development of many malignant tumors. However, the potential regulatory role and molecular mechanisms of circRNAs in cervical cancer (CC) are still not clear. Here, we explored circRNAs associated with CC from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets GSE113696 and GSE102686.

Open Med (Wars)

January 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Ningbo Yinzhou No. 2 Hospital, No. 998, Qianhe Road, Yinzhou District, Ningbo, Zhejiang, 315100, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how different target area delineation methods in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) affect treatment outcomes for patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).
  • A total of 88 NPC patients were divided into two groups—control and observation—based on MRI and CT, with the observation group using a more detailed targeting plan that theoretically enhanced treatment efficacy.
  • Results indicated that the observation group experienced higher treatment effectiveness and fewer side effects, with certain blood markers showing significant predictive value for the effectiveness of the radiotherapy.

Aims: To enhance ovarian tumor diagnosis beyond conventional methods, this study explored combining diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI-MRI) and serum biomarkers (Mucin 1 [MUC1], MUC13, and MUC16) for distinguishing borderline from malignant epithelial ovarian tumors.

Methods: A total of 126 patients, including 71 diagnosed with borderline (BEOTs) and 55 with malignant epithelial ovarian tumors (MEOTs), underwent preoperative DWI-MRI. Region of interest (ROI) was manually drawn along the solid component's boundary of the largest tumor, focusing on areas with potentially the lowest apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC).

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a very common occurrence in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and that was the main cause of mortality in these patients. The aims of the present study were to examine the effects of inflammation, malnutrition, and an oxidative stress in patients undergoing long-term hemodialysis or/and kidney transplant patients or patients with late-stage CKD, with its coherent consequences during a 38-month follow-up period. The present study included 137 patients with renal insufficiencies (48 patients had CKD, 29 patients had kidney transplants, and 60 CKD patients underwent hemodialysis [HD] and 39 normal individuals [controls]; aged 49 ± 20 years, 96 males and 80 females).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the measurement properties of the Chinese version of the World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5-C) among 343 healthcare students, focusing on its structural validity, measurement invariance, reliability, and optimal cutoff point.
  • - Results indicated that the WHO-5-C showed strong structural validity and internal consistency, with good test-retest reliability and satisfactory convergent validity compared to other health questionnaires.
  • - The optimal cutoff score for the WHO-5-C was determined to be 50, demonstrating a high level of accuracy (area under the ROC curve = 0.882), indicating it can effectively assess subjective well-being in this population.

Background: Chemotherapy drugs can cause drug resistance and other problems when treating lung cancer, which leads to treatment failure. Ursolic acid (UA) is used in formulations based on traditional Chinese medicine. UA has excellent anti-tumor effects, but they are limited by solubility and non-specificity to tumor cells.

Background: We aimed to analyze the independent risk factors that affect the treatment outcomes of residual symptoms of cured benign paroxysmal positional vertigoand to construct a nomogram model.

Methods: A total of 186 benign paroxysmal positional vertigo patients who were treated in our hospital from June 2019 to August 2021 were selected. According to whether there were residual symptoms, they were divided into a group with residual symptoms (n=82) and a group without residual symptoms (n = 104).

Checkpoint kinase 2 (CHEK2) plays a crucial role in responding to DNA damage and is linked to diverse cancer types. However, its significance in the prediction of prognosis and impacts on the immune status of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) remains unclear. This study aimed to identify the role of CHEK2 in prognosis and immune microenvironment of ccRCC.

  • Wilms' tumor (WT) is primarily a childhood kidney cancer but can appear in adults, leading to diagnostic challenges and poor outcomes due to nonspecific symptoms and imaging.
  • A 45-year-old female with a history of hemodialysis was diagnosed with a right kidney tumor that had spread to the lung, identified using ultrasound and contrast-enhanced imaging techniques which highlighted its irregular characteristics.
  • This case emphasizes the significant role of ultrasound, especially contrast-enhanced ultrasound, in diagnosing adult WT, suggesting its potential to improve understanding and outcomes in similar cases.

KCNH2A561V Heterozygous Mutation Inhibits KCNH2 Protein Expression via The Activation of UPR Mediated by ATF6.

Physiol Res

November 2023

Emergency Medical Center, Ningbo Yinzhou No. 2 Hospital, Ningbo, Zhejiang, China; Department of General Surgery, Ningbo No.2 Hospital, Ningbo, China. Department of Cardiology, Ningbo Medical Center LiHuiLi Hospital, Ningbo, China.

The potassium channel protein KCNH2 is encoded by KCNH2 gene, and there are more than 300 mutations of KCNH2. Unfolded protein response (UPR) is typically initiated in response to an accumulation of unfolded and/or misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The present study aimed to explore the UPR process and the role of activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) in the abnormal expression of potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily H member 2 (KCNH2)A561V.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the most commonly used treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease and has the advantages of simple operation and low treatment costs. However, long-term PD may lead to inguinal hernia formation, which needs to be repaired as early as possible. There are many studies on this kind of hernia, but there are few reports about how to treat recurrent hernia in PD patients.
