Prognostic significance of long non-coding RNA MALAT1 for predicting the recurrence and metastasis of gallbladder cancer and its effect on cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis.

The objective of this study is to explore the role of MALAT1 as a molecular indicator in predicting the recurrence, metastasis, and prognosis of gallbladder cancer (GBC) and its effect on the proliferation, invasion, migration, and apoptosis of GBC cells in vitro. GBC tissues and adjacent normal tissues were collected from 102 patients. MALAT1 short hairpin RNA (shRNA) plasmids were first constructed to transfect the GBC-SD cells.

LncRNA HOXA11-AS promotes proliferation and invasion by targeting miR-124 in human non-small cell lung cancer cells.

Long non-coding RNAs have been implicated in human cancer but their mechanisms of action are mainly undocumented. In this study, we found that HOXA11-AS expression was upregulated in non-small cell lung cancer tissues and cell lines. High levels of HOXA11-AS expression were correlated with larger tumor size and lymph node metastasis.

Effect of dopamine on bone morphogenesis protein-2 expression in human retinal pigment epithelium.

Aim: To investigate the effect of dopamine on bone morphogenesis protein-2 (BMP-2) expression in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells .

Methods: ARPE-19 cells as a human RPE cell line were cultured with dopamine for different times (2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 and 24h) or with different concentrations (0.1, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 100 µg/mL) .

Objective: In spite of bortezomib being developed and demonstrated as a safe drug therapy for multiple myeloma (MM), the role of bortezomib-induced receptor activator of nuclear factor (NF)-κB ligand (RANKL) in the MM cell lines remains to be understood. Thus the present study aims to explore the impact of bortezomib on RANKL expression, cell growth and apoptosis in human myeloma cell line RPMI 8226.

Methods: Four experiment groups were set according to different concentrations of bortezomib, namely blank group (treated with DMEM solution free of other drugs), low-dose group (treated with 10 nmol/L bortezomib), middle-dose group (treated with 20 nmol/L bortezomib) and high-dose group (treated with 40 nmol/L bortezomib).

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been reported to play vital roles in various human cancers. The aim of this study was to explore the critical role of lncRNA HOXA11-AS in uveal melanoma (UM) progression. Briefly, we found that HOXA11-AS is overexpressed in UM tissues and cells; HOXA11-AS could regulate UM cell growth, invasion, and apoptosis.

L-Tetrahydropalmatine Induces Apoptosis in EU-4 Leukemia Cells by Down-Regulating X-Linked Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein and Increases the Sensitivity Towards Doxorubicin.

Background: L-Tetrahydropalmatine (L-THP) is a tetra-hydro protoberberine isoquinoline alkaloid. The phyto-compounds bearing isoquinoline alkaloids have been reported to show a potential effect against a number of human cancers cell lines including leukemia. We hypothesized that L-THP, being an isoquinoline alkaloid, could be a potential molecule against acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), in this study, we evaluate L-THP against p53 deficient leukemia EU-4 cell lines in vitro.

Association of IL-6 Gene (-174 and -572 G/C) Polymorphisms with Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy of Type 2 Diabetes in a Chinese Population.

Purpose: To investigate the association of interleukin (IL)-6 with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in a Chinese population.

Methods: Two subtypes of the IL-6 promoter (-174 and -572 G/C) were genotyped in 215 T2D patients with PDR and 207 T2D patients with a normal retinal function (controls) using the PCR-RFLP method. The mRNA and protein expression of IL-6 was examined by real-time PCR.

Meta-analysis of the actions of antithymocyte globulin in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation.

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a serious complication associated with allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT). Antithymocyte globulin (ATG) is widely used prior to allo-HCT for GVHD prevention, though evidence of its efficacy remains unclear. We therefore identified nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs), enrolling 1089 patients (554 in the ATG group and 535 in the non-ATG group) to conduct a meta-analysis of the actions of ATG in allo-HCT.

Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy in A-92-older Chinese patient for cancer of head of the pancreas: A Case report.

Introduction: Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) is one of the most complex gastrointestinal procedures performed in laparoscopic abdominal surgery. However, the concern for elderly undergoing LPD remains. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports describing LPD for A-92-older patient.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mild hypothermia therapy on gastric mucosa after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the underlying mechanism. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ventricular fibrillation was induced in pigs. After CPR, the surviving pigs were divided into mild hypothermia-treated and control groups.

Anesthetic Propofol-Induced Gene Expression Changes in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery Based on Dynamical Differential Coexpression Network Analysis.

We aimed to determine the influence of anesthetic propofol on gene expression in patients treated by coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery based on differential coexpression network (DCN) and to further reveal the novel mechanisms of the cardioprotective effects of propofol. Firstly, we constructed the DCN for disease condition based on Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) and weight value. Secondly, the inference of modules was applied to search modules from DCN with same members but varied connectivity.

Short sleep duration and obesity among children: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

Objective: Previous epidemiology studies have demonstrated that short sleep duration may be associated with the development of obesity, although the effects remain controversial. This study aimed to assess epidemiologic evidence systematically on the relation between sleep duration and obesity in children.

Design And Methods: We searched the Medline, Cochrane Library, EMBASE and Science Citation Index databases and reference lists of the included articles.

Pain is a complex experience that comprises both sensory and affective dimensions. Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) plays an important role in the modulation of neuronal plasticity associated with the pathogenesis of pain sensation. However, the role of mTOR in pain affect is unclear.

Laparoscopic gastrectomy versus open gastrectomy for elderly patients with gastric cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and potential benefits of laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) comparing with open gastrectomy (OG) in elderly population.

Methods: Studies comparing LG with OG for elderly population with gastric cancer, published between January 1994 and July 2015, were identified in the PubMed, Embase, and ISI Web of Science databases. Operative outcomes (intraoperative blood loss, operative time, and the number of lymph nodes harvested) and postoperative outcomes (time to first ambulation, time to first flatus, time to first oral intake, postoperative hospital stay, postoperative morbidity) were included and analyzed.

Robotic versus Laparoscopic Distal Pancreatectomy: A Meta-Analysis of Short-Term Outcomes.

Aim: To compare the safety and efficacy of robotic-assisted distal pancreatectomy (RADP) and laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP).

FRZB up-regulated in hepatocellular carcinoma bone metastasis.

The clinical relevance of frizzled-related protein (FRZB) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) bone metastasis remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical relationship of FRZB in patients with HCC bone metastasis after surgical resection. FRZB expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) HCC and paired bone metastasis tissues from 13 patients that underwent surgical resection.

A novel CRX mutation by whole-exome sequencing in an autosomal dominant cone-rod dystrophy pedigree.

Aim: To identify the disease-causing gene mutation in a Chinese pedigree with autosomal dominant cone-rod dystrophy (adCORD).

Methods: A southern Chinese adCORD pedigree including 9 affected individuals was studied. Whole-exome sequencing (WES), coupling the Agilent whole-exome capture system to the Illumina HiSeq 2000 DNA sequencing platform was used to search the specific gene mutation in 3 affected family members and 1 unaffected member.

Ameliorating effect of transcutaneous electroacupuncture on impaired gastric accommodation induced by cold meal in healthy subjects.

Background: Impaired gastric accommodation is recognized as one of major pathophysiologies in functional dyspepsia and gastroparesis. Electroacupuncture has been shown to improve gastric accommodation in laboratory settings. It is, however, unknown whether it exerts similar ameliorating effect in humans and whether needleless transcutaneous electroacupuncture (TEA) is also effective in improving gastric accommodation.

Association study of ankylosing spondylitis and polymorphisms in ERAP1 gene in Zhejiang Han Chinese population.

The susceptibility loci of ERAP1 polymorphisms have been found to be strongly associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The researches in multiple ethnic cohorts suggested that the population attributable risk in ERAP1 polymorphisms is at a high significance level. This study was undertaken to estimate the prevalence and incidence of subsets of AS and investigate the specific variants of ERAP1 polymorphisms in AS susceptibility, in the Han ethnic Chinese population in Zhejiang Province.

GSTT1 polymorphism and breast cancer risk in the Chinese population: an updated meta-analysis and review.

Background: Although a number of studies have been conducted on the association between GSTT1 polymorphism and breast cancer in China, this association remains elusive and controversial. To clarify the effects of GSTT1 polymorphism on the risk of breast cancer, an updated meta-analysis was performed in the Chinese population.

Material/methods: Related studies were identified from PubMed, Springer Link, Ovid, Chinese Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Chinese Biology Medicine (CBM) to up 28(th) January 2015.

FRZB up-regulation is correlated with hepatic metastasis and poor prognosis in colon carcinoma patients with hepatic metastasis.

Frizzled-related protein (FRZB) was up-regulated in hepatic metastasis samples compared with primary colon cancer samples in our previous work. However, the clinical relevance of FRZB in colon cancer hepatic metastasis remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of FRZB in patients with colon carcinoma hepatic metastasis after hepatic resection.

Co-expression of CXCL8 and HIF-1α is associated with metastasis and poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), induces cytokines such as CXCL8 and tumor dissemination, chemo- and radio-resistance. We analyzed correlation between HIF-1α and CXCL8 levels, tumor characteristics and overall survival in 102 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Levels of HIF-1α and CXCL8 were increased in HCC tissues and cell lines.
