High density lipoprotein (HDL) is well established to have an athero-protective role under normal conditions; however, pro-inflammatory alteration of HDL proteins may transform the HDL particle into a dysfunctional molecule. Our aim was to investigate HDL dysfunction by measuring enzyme-based markers in carotid artery stenosis (CAS). All participants underwent duplex ultrasound and 52 subjects diagnosed with CAS and 51 subjects who had no significant stenosis (as controls) were enrolled in this study.

This study aims to assess whether or not the nationwide newborn ultrasonographic hip screening program has influenced the rate of different types of surgical interventions performed in developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in children in Turkey. A retrospective analysis of the nationwide data obtained from the National Registry System between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2020, was carried out. The rate of minor and major surgical interventions was calculated by dividing the total number of primary closed/open reductions with or without tenotomies and the total number of primary pelvic or periacetabular osteotomies with or without femoral osteotomies by the total number of live births in the country per year, respectively.

Photodiagnosis Photodyn Ther

September 2023

Department of Ophthalmology, Yozgat City Hospital, Erdoğan Akdağ Mah., Viyana Cad., Merkez, Yozgat 66100, Turkey. Electronic address:

Background: To evaluate anatomical and functional changes and vision-related quality of life in patients whose glaucoma follow-up was disrupted by the COVID-19 restrictions.

Methods: This retrospective observational study included 100 patients who were followed up at the glaucoma unit. For the patients whose follow-up evaluations were postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions, visual acuity (VA), intraocular pressure (IOP), retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, visual field parameters [mean deviation (MD), pattern standard deviation (PSD), and visual field index (VFI)], and the National Institute of Ophthalmology Visual Function Scale-25 (NEI-VFQ-25) score were evaluated based on the measurements performed at the last visit before COVID-19 (V1) and at the first visit after the removal of COVID-19 restrictions (V2).

Am J Perinatol

May 2024

Department of Medical Biochemistry, Sağlık Bilimleri Üniversitesi Gülhane Tıp Fakültesi, Health Science University Ankara, Turkey.

Objective: A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin-9 (ADAMTS-9), one of the ADAMTS enzymes, is expressed in all fetal tissues, unlike other ADAMTS enzymes, and is thus thought to play a role in fetal development. In this context, the objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between ADAMTS-9 activity and the development of congenital heart diseases (CHD) with a view to using ADAMTS-9 level as a biomarker for CHDs.

Study Design: Newborns diagnosed with CHD and healthy newborns were included in the study as the CHD and control groups, respectively.

In differentiated thyroid cancer, radioiodine therapy and whole body scans (WBS) are integral part of disease management. We present the case of a 33-year-old woman with multifocal thyroid carcinoma who was treated with radioiodine. Post-treatment WBS scintigraphy showed focal increased I-131 uptake in the spleen, although stimulated thyroglobulin level was not suggestive of distant metastasis.

  • The study investigates the connections between obesity, Vitamin D deficiency, and protein oxidation in children, comparing various metabolic markers across different weight categories.
  • Results show that obese children had significantly lower Vitamin D levels compared to their pre-obese and normal-weight peers, with additional findings indicating that these levels vary by gender and developmental stage.
  • High triglyceride levels were linked to disruptions in thiol-disulfide balance, highlighting that low Vitamin D, puberty, and elevated triglycerides negatively impact this system.
