Background: The Systemic Inflammation Response Index (SIRI) has demonstrated predictive capabilities for clinical outcomes in various diseases. However, its prognostic utility in decompensated liver cirrhosis (DLC) remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association between SIRI and the risk of short-term (3 and 6 months) all-cause mortality in DLC patients.

Electronic address:

The cGAS-STING axis is a promising therapeutic target against cancer. However, most activators require STING signaling in the host, especially within antigen-presenting cells, which are rare in a cold tumor microenvironment. The cGAS-STING cascade is also present within cancer cells but with suppressed activity.

Background: Digoxin is a commonly used cardiac glycoside drug in clinical practice, primarily transported by P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and susceptible to the influence of P-gp inhibitors/inducers. Concurrent administration of ritonavir and digoxin may significantly increase the plasma concentration of digoxin. Due to the narrow therapeutic window of digoxin, combined use may lead to severe toxic effects.

J Thorac Dis

October 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Tracheobronchial injuries are serious and often misdiagnosed; larger injuries are harder to heal, leading to a variety of treatment options.
  • - A case of a 63-year-old man with a severe 4-cm tracheobronchial tear post-surgery was effectively treated with conservative measures including oxygen, pain management, antibiotics, and nutritional support.
  • - The patient healed completely in four weeks with no complications, highlighting that conservative treatment can be a successful approach for significant tracheal injuries, especially in older patients with other health issues.

Curcumol ameliorates alcohol and high-fat diet-induced fatty liver disease via modulation of the Ceruloplasmin/iron overload/mtDNA signaling pathway.

J Nutr Biochem

February 2025

Department of Pharmacology, School of Pharmacy, Wannan Medical College, Wuhu, Anhui, China; Laboratory of Pharmacology of Chinese Medicine, School of Pharmacy, Wannan Medical College, Wuhu, Anhui, China. Electronic address:

Fatty liver disease (FLD), a chronic liver disease characterized by excessive lipid deposition, is affecting more and more people worldwide owing to the increasing global incidence of obesity and heavy alcohol consumption. However, there is still no effective strategy for prevention or treatment of alcohol and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced FLD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of curcumol on alcohol and HFD-induced FLD and the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive brain tumor with a poor prognosis, largely due to the presence of glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs). These cells drive tumor progression, recurrence, and chemoresistance, making them critical targets for therapy. This study aims to identify novel GSC markers for improved diagnosis and targeted treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between the serum albumin-to-serum creatinine ratio (sACR) and in-hospital mortality among patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP).
  • Researchers categorized patients based on sACR levels and used statistical analyses to determine how these levels affect mortality risk.
  • Findings indicate that lower sACR levels are associated with higher in-hospital mortality, suggesting sACR can help identify high-risk patients for better treatment outcomes.

Cuproptosis in cancer therapy: mechanisms, therapeutic application and future prospects.

J Mater Chem B

December 2024

Department of Pharmacy, The First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan Medical College, Yijishan Hospital of Wannan Medical College, Wuhu, China.

Cuproptosis is a regulated form of cell death induced by the accumulation of metal ions and is closely linked to aspects of cellular drug resistance, cellular metabolism, and signalling pathways. Due to its crucial role in regulating physiological and pathological processes, cuproptosis has gained increasing significance as a potential target for anticancer drug development. In this review, we introduce the definition of cuproptosis and provide a comprehensive discussion of the mechanisms of cuproptosis.

Objective: To investigate whether cisplatin induces tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) secretion in human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cells to trigger RIP1/RIP3/MLKL-dependent necroptosis of the cells.

Methods: HNSCC cell lines HN4 and SCC4 treated with cisplatin (CDDP) or the combined treatment with CDDP and z-VAD-fmk (a caspase inhibitor) or Nec-1 (a necroptosis inhibitor) for 24 h were examined for changes in cell viability using CCK8 assay and expressions of caspase-8 and necroptosis pathway proteins (RIP1/RIP3/MLKL) using Western blotting. The changes in migration of the cells were assessed with cell scratch assay, and the expressions of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) marker proteins N-cadherin, vimentin, and E-cadherin as well as the expressions of NF-κB (p65) and TNF-α were detected with Western blotting.

The incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) increases with age; however, the precise mechanisms by which aging elevates AF risk and the effective biomarkers for managing AF in elderly patients remain unclear. We analyzed plasma samples from 100 elderly AF patients, 100 young and 100 elderly patients without atrial fibrillation (NAF), along with left atrial tissues obtained from both AF and NAF patients following valve replacement. Our findings indicate reduced levels of β-OHB and citrate synthase (CS) activity in elderly AF patients compared to their NAF counterparts.

Article Synopsis
  • Fluorescent molecular platforms are valuable for biology and optoelectronics but face solid-state emission quenching challenges, which can be addressed by using bulky substituents or aggregation-induced emission techniques to boost brightness.
  • A new class of fluorophores called BPSHY was developed from pyrrole and salicylaldehyde derivatives, enhanced with boronic acids to improve solubility and optical properties, achieving high quantum yields and strong absorption in the visible region.
  • BPSHY probes can label specific subcellular organelles, like lysosomes and mitochondria, with high efficiency, indicating their potential for real-time monitoring of organelle dynamics in live cells.

Cell Biol Toxicol

October 2024

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital, Yijishan Hospital of Wannan Medical College, No.2, Zheshan West Road, Wuhu, 241001, Anhui, China.

Cisplatin-based chemotherapy serves as the standard of care for individuals with advanced stages of gastric cancer. Nevertheless, the emergence of chemoresistance in GC has detrimental impacts on prognosis, yet the underlying mechanisms governing this phenomenon remain elusive. Level of mitophagy and ferroptosis of GC cells were detected by fluorescence, flow cytometry, GSH, MDA, Fe assays, and to explore the specific molecular mechanisms between NPR1 and cisplatin resistance by performing western blot and coimmunoprecipitation (co-IP) assays.

A dual-STING-activating nanosystem expands cancer immunotherapeutic temporal window.

Cell Rep Med

November 2024

Department of Pharmaceutics, Jiang Su Key Laboratory of Drug Design and Optimization, State Key Laboratory of Natural Medicines, China Pharmaceutical University, Nanjing 210009, China. Electronic address:

Stimulator of interferon genes (STING) is a promising antitumor target via bridging innate and adaptive immunity, yet the transient nature of immune signal transduction renders small-molecule agonists susceptible to short time effectiveness. Here, we report a dual-STING-activating micelle system (D-SAM) to dynamically program STING kinetics. Mechanistically, the natural ligand cGAMP encapsulated in D-SAM initiates STING signaling, while the pH-sensitive polymeric agonist PC7A disassembled from micelle shell buffers lysosomal protons and retards STING degradation.
