α4 nicotinic receptors on GABAergic neurons mediate a cholinergic analgesic circuit in the substantia nigra pars reticulata.

Acta Pharmacol Sin

June 2024

Jiangsu Province Key Laboratory of Anesthesiology, School of Anesthesiology, Xuzhou Medical University, Xuzhou, 221004, China.

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) regulate pain pathways with various outcomes depending on receptor subtypes, neuron types, and locations. But it remains unknown whether α4β2 nAChRs abundantly expressed in the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) have potential to mitigate hyperalgesia in pain states. We observed that injection of nAChR antagonists into the SNr reduced pain thresholds in naïve mice, whereas injection of nAChR agonists into the SNr relieved hyperalgesia in mice, subjected to capsaicin injection into the lower hind leg, spinal nerve injury, chronic constriction injury, or chronic nicotine exposure.

Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis and Inflammation Dysfunction in Late-Life Depression: An Observational Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Neuropsychiatr Dis Treat

February 2024

Center for Rehabilitation Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital (Affiliated People's Hospital), Hangzhou Medical College, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: There are some challenges to diagnosis in the context of similar diagnostic criteria for late-life depression (LLD) and adult depression due to cognitive impairment and other clinical manifestations. The association between gut microbiota and inflammation remains unclear in LLD. We analyzed gut microbiota characteristics and serum inflammatory cytokines in individuals with LLD to explore the combined role of these two factors in potential biomarkers of LLD.

State Key Laboratory of Oral and Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Regeneration, Key Laboratory of Oral Biomedicine Ministry of Education, Hubei Key Laboratory of Stomatology, School and Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China.

Numerous studies have investigated the effects of stannous ions on specific microbes and their efficacy in reducing dental plaque. Nonetheless, our understanding of their impact on the oral microbiome is still a subject of ongoing exploration. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate the effects of a stannous-containing sodium fluoride dentifrice in comparison to a zinc-containing sodium fluoride dentifrice and a control group on intact, healthy oral biofilms.

Risk of atrial fibrillation in patients with multiple myeloma: what is known and directions for future study.

Egypt Heart J

February 2024

Department of Cardiology, The First Affiliated Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

Background: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a prevalent hematological tumor, and recent clinical data have highlighted the significance of atrial fibrillation (AF) as a crucial complication affecting the prognosis of MM. This review aims to consolidate findings from published clinical studies, focusing on the epidemiological characteristics of AF in MM patients and the associated risks arising from MM treatments such as autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, proteasome inhibitors, and immunomodulatory agents.

Main Body: While existing data partially demonstrate a strong correlation between MM and AF, further clinical studies are necessary to comprehensively investigate their association.

Objective: We compared the operation times, graft success rates, and hearing gains between push-through (PT) myringoplasty and external auditory canal (EAC) flap tympanoplasty in patients with chronic marginal perforations.

Materials And Methods: A total of 77 patients with chronic marginal perforations were randomly allocated to endoscopic perichondrium-cartilage myringoplasty with raising of the EAC flaps (n = 39) and PT technique (n = 38) groups. The graft outcomes, mean operation times, and postoperative complications were compared 6 months after operation.

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 138 HS patients, 23.91% developed AKI, with the amount of NS infusion being a significant factor in predicting AKI and longer stays in the ICU and hospital.
  • * Higher volumes of NS infusion were associated with increased risks for AKI, ICU admission, and longer hospital stays, though there were no differences in the need for renal therapy or hospital mortality rates.

  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of using antibiotic ointment versus not using it after myringoplasty, a surgery for chronic ear perforations.
  • A total of 135 patients were randomly assigned to either the antibiotic ointment group or the control group, with outcomes assessed after six months.
  • Results showed similar rates of graft success and infection between the two groups, indicating that both methods are equally effective for postoperative care.

Article Synopsis
  • Self-collection of saliva samples has gained popularity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, but studies on its effectiveness for detecting respiratory pathogens are lacking.
  • In a study involving 469 patients, the effectiveness of nasopharyngeal swabs, oropharyngeal swabs, and saliva samples was compared, with nasopharyngeal swabs showing the highest detection rate for respiratory pathogens.
  • The research concluded that while nasopharyngeal swabs are reliable, saliva samples are easier to collect and may be beneficial in emergency situations, with a combination of sample types potentially improving detection rates.
