One of the most frequent genes affected in pediatric ALL is the CDKN2A/2B gene, acting as a secondary cooperating event and playing an important role in cell-cycle regulation and chemosensitivity. Despite its inclusion in combined CNA (copy-number alterations) classifiers, like the IKZF1plus entity and the UKALL CNA profile, the prognostic impact of the individual gene deletions outside the context of a combined CNA evaluation remains controversial. Addressing the CDKN2A/2B deletions' additive prognostic effect in current risk-stratification algorithms, we present a retrospective study of a Greek pediatric ALL cohort comprising 247 patients studied over a 24-year period (2000-2023).

Endometrial carcinoma is a common malignancy in women and shows increasing incidence. Except for its two main pathogenetic types I and II, the continuing evolution on molecular genetics have led to a new classification system (TCGA), that includes four main molecular subtypes: (i) POLE-mutant (ultramutated), (ii) hypermutated (MSI), (iii) copy-number low/MSS (p53wt) and (iv) copy-number high/serous-like (p53mut). The undifferentiated and dedifferentiated endometrial carcinomas are rare and clinically aggressive variants, comprising about 10% of the high-grade endometrial carcinomas and 2% of the endometrial carcinomas in general.

Background: Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is an autoimmune disease which may result in extensive damage of the thyroid gland. Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), is the most frequent HT-associated disorder, with anti-parietal cell autoantibodies (APCA) being a screening test for autoimmune CAG. The aim of this study was to investigate, in a cohort of HT patients: a) the prevalence of APCA in an attempt to define their clinical phenotype and b) any possible associations of APCA with other autoimmune diseases and malignancies.

Aim: To evaluate the distribution of circulating immune cell subsets in peripheral blood of patients with sarcoidosis and investigate if there is an association with an underlying cardiac involvement.
Methods And Results: Eighty-five newly diagnosed treatment-naïve patients with sarcoidosis (50 women) were included in the study. All patients underwent a thorough cardiac investigation, including cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR).

Paragangliomas are rare tumors of chromaffin cells arising from an extra-adrenal location. Unlike pheochromocytomas, they are seldom functional. We present a case of pericardial paraganglioma incidentally encountered on an echocardiographic study, focusing on the characteristic features the tumor demonstrates on different imaging modalities.

Chronic inflammation and increased oxidative stress are contributing factors to many non-communicable diseases. A growing body of evidence indicates that dietary nutrients can activate the immune system and may lead to the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Fatty acids as macronutrients are key players for immunomodulation, with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids having the most beneficial effect, while polyphenols and carotenoids seem to be the most promising antioxidants.

Gastric Cancer epidemics have changed over recent decades, declining in incidence, shifting from distal to proximal location, transforming from intestinal to diffuse histology. Novel chemotherapeutic agents combined with modern surgical operations hardly changed overall disease related survival. This may be attributed to a substantial inherent geographical variation of disease genetics, but also to a failure to standardize and implement treatment protocols in clinical practice.

Pean made an impact in the history of surgery through his work and especially with his innovative surgical techniques in abdominal surgery and in orthopedics as well as with the invention of numerous surgical instruments. He also made an impact with his pioneering total shoulder arthroplasty.

Sex steroids, except for their primary reproductive role, exert key effects on metabolic target tissues. Androgen receptors have been detected in various tissues, participating in both central and peripheral regulation of metabolism and insulin action. The physiological role of androgens in regulating multiple aspects of female insulin signaling and energy metabolism becomes evident early in utero, thus programming how insulin-targeted tissues will behave in later life.

Background: Combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE) has recently received great attention, with studies suggesting that it presents a distinct clinical entity while others have challenged this hypothesis. This nationwide study aimed to describe a large cohort of Greek CPFE patients and to examine potential prognostic factors for survival.
Methods: This retrospective study included 97 patients with CPFE.

Objective: To describe the most common fluoroscopic-guided access techniques during percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in a step-by-step manner and to assist in the standardisation of their technique and terminology.
Methods: A high-quality animation video was created for each of the respective fluoroscopic techniques, focusing into the parallel projection of external surgical manoeuvres and their effect in the three-dimensional space of the kidney.
Results: Four predominant fluoroscopic-guided percutaneous access techniques are available, each with different advantages and limitations.

Background: Serum creatinine (S-Cr) is the most commonly used marker for the assessment of renal function in kidney transplantation (KTx). Cystatin-C (Cys-C) has been proposed as an alternative marker of renal function for the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), which seems to be more accurate than S-Cr. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between changes in S-Cr, Cys-C, and eGFR measurements in KT patients during the early post-transplantation (post-Tx) period.

The use of intravenous bisphosphonates (pamidronate or zoledronic acid) is the cornerstone for the management of multiple myeloma-(MM-) related bone disease. However, osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a rare, but sometimes difficult to manage, adverse effect of bisphosphonates therapy. A retrospective review of all MM patients who were treated with bisphosphonates in our department, from 2003 to 2013, and developed ONJ was performed.

The purpose of our study was to test the efficacy and toxicity of hyperthermia in conjunction with chemoradiotherapy for T3N0 laryngeal cancer. From 1997-2006, 25 patients diagnosed with T3N0 laryngeal carcinoma who denied laryngectomy were selected for this retrospective study. Patients received a total dose of 70 Gy (2 Gy per fraction, 5 days per week) in combination with 6 weekly sessions of hyperthermia, in addition to weekly cisplatin chemotherapy.

Purpose: The purpose is to evaluate the feasibility, efficacy, and the toxicity of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) in patients with advanced hepatocelluar carcinoma (HCC) and inferior vena cava tumor thrombosis (IVCTT).
Methods: Between 2007 and 2012, in a retrospective way, 9 patients (median age 69 years) with advanced HCC and IVCTT unfit for surgery, radiofrequency ablation, embolization, or chemotherapy were treated with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT). The radiotherapy volume included both primary tumor and IVTT.

Human platelets carry membrane glycoproteins that control platelet aggregation and activation. A number of clinical studies have suggested that certain polymorphisms of genes encoding these proteins increase the risk for cardiovascular disease. The frequency of gene polymorphisms for the four most common platelet glycoproteins (HPA 1, 2, 3 and 5) was examined and correlated with the primary cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in Greek patients on HD.
