Department of Biopharmaceutical Convergence, Sungkyunkwan University, Suwon, 16419, Republic of Korea; School of Pharmacy, Sungkyunkwan University, Suwon, 16419, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

The dynamic equilibrium between acetylation and deacetylation is vital for cellular homeostasis. Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder marked by α-synuclein (α-syn) accumulation and dopaminergic neuron loss in the substantia nigra, is associated with a disruption of this balance. Therefore, correcting this imbalance with histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors represents a promising treatment strategy for PD.

Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine, Yeungnam University Medical Center, Yeungnam University College of Medicine, Daegu 42415, Republic of Korea.

: Although the risk of serious bleeding following peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion is low, pericannular bleeding can increase the risk of catheter-related infections and reduce catheter survival. We aimed to analyze the risk factors for bleeding complications during peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion and assess whether temporary preemptive hemodialysis before catheterization can reduce bleeding and improve catheter survival. : We retrospectively analyzed bleeding complications and catheter survival in patients who underwent temporary hemodialysis prior to peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion.

These challenges underscore the need for novel treatments that target biofilm formation and effectively reduce bacterial virulence. This study investigates the antibiofilm and antimicrobial efficacy of novel halogenated pyrimidine derivatives against , focusing on three compounds identified as potent biofilm inhibitors: 2,4-dichloro-5-fluoropyrimidine (24DC5FP), 5-bromo-2,4-dichloro-7H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine (24DC5BPP), and 2,4-dichloro-5-iodo-7H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine (24DC5IPP).

Gamma-glutamate is an important excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS), which plays an important role in transmitting synapses, plasticity, and other brain activities. Nevertheless, alterations in the glutamatergic signaling pathway are now accepted as a central element in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathophysiology. One of the most prevalent types of dementia in older adults is AD, a progressive neurodegenerative illness brought on by a persistent decline in cognitive function.

Natural forms of vitamin E include four tocopherols and four tocotrienols (α, β, γ, and δ), which are essential as lipophilic antioxidants. Among these eight isoforms, α-tocopherol (αT), the predominant form of vitamin E found in tissues, has traditionally received the most attention in disease prevention research due to its robust antioxidant activity. However, recent studies suggest that other forms of vitamin E exhibit distinct and potentially more potent beneficial activities in disease prevention and treatment.

Background: To date, most intradialytic hypotension (IDH) studies have proposed technologies to comprehensively predict the occurrence of IDH using the patient's baseline information and ultrafiltration (UF) information, but it is difficult to apply the technologies while identifying the patient's condition in real time.

Methods: In this study, we propose an IDH indicator that uses heart rate (HR) change information to identify the patient's condition in real time and visually shows whether IDH has occurred. The data used were collected from 40 dialysis patients in a clinical trial conducted in the Artificial Kidney Unit at Yeungnam University Medical Center, Korea, from 18 July to 29 November 2023.

The electrocatalytic oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER) are key processes used in energy storage and conversion. We have developed a highly efficient MnCoO nanostructure anchored with functionalized carbon black (MnCoO/f-CB), which has been characterized by XRD, FT-IR, Raman spectra, FE-SEM, and HR-TEM analyses as robust bifunctional electrocatalysts for both HER and OER. At a characteristic 10 mA cm current density, the MnCoO/f-CB composite ECs exhibit low overpotentials of 330 mV for OER and 360 mV for HER, respectively.

Department of Electronic Engineering, Yeungnam University, 280 Daehak-Ro, Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk 38541, South Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Phase-pure crystalline chalcostibite (CuSbS) thin films were created using thermal evaporation, followed by sulfurization at temperatures of 400°C and 430°C for various durations, leading to different phase formations.
  • At 400°C for 10-60 minutes, the films showed a dominant orthorhombic CuSbS phase with a minor SbS phase, while extending the time to 90 minutes created additional famatinite phases.
  • Sulfurization at 430°C for over 30 minutes resulted in phase-pure CuSbS films with promising characteristics for solar cells, achieving a peak efficiency of 2.2% with optimal performance at 60 minutes.

Specialized or secondary metabolites are small molecules of biological origin, often showing potent biological activities with applications in agriculture, engineering and medicine. Usually, the biosynthesis of these natural products is governed by sets of co-regulated and physically clustered genes known as biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). To share information about BGCs in a standardized and machine-readable way, the Minimum Information about a Biosynthetic Gene cluster (MIBiG) data standard and repository was initiated in 2015.
