Background/aims: Optimal risk stratification based on simplified geriatric assessment to predict treatment-related toxicity and survival needs to be clarified in older patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).
Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study enrolled newly diagnosed patients with DLBCL (≥ 65 yr) between September 2015 and April 2018. A simplified geriatric assessment was performed at baseline using Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental ADL (IADL), and Charlson's Comorbidity Index (CCI).

Unlabelled: Teriparatide and denosumab, anti-osteoporosis medications with different mechanisms, have been widely used in the patients with osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) considered as advanced osteoporosis. Teriparatide has been shown to enhance bone formation and fracture healing in OVF, but there are still no sufficient evidences discussing about the role of denosumab in newly developed OVF. In this study, we found the similar radiological deformation and functional outcomes of conservative treatment with teriparatide and denosumab in thoracolumbar (TL) OVF, and teriparatide showed a more frequent incidence of fracture union with paravertebral bone bridge formation compared to denosumab.

Background: Previous studies have suggested that patients with polycythemia vera (PV) who exhibit hydroxyurea-resistance (HU-R) and -intolerance (HU-I) may have distinct characteristics and clinical outcomes. However, to date, no studies have reported a comparison between these two groups or assessed prognostic factors in these patients.
Methods: The objective of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes and identify prognostic factors among PV patients with HU-R or HU-I.

Background: A multimodal therapeutic strategy for preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) benefits moderate- and high-risk surgical patients. We compared the efficacy of a combination of midazolam and ramosetron and a combination of midazolam and palonosetron for PONV prophylaxis in patients scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
Methods: We enrolled 68 patients aged 20 to 65 years undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Objective: Deep learning is an advanced machine-learning approach that is used in several medical fields. Here, we developed a deep learning model using an object detection algorithm to identify the L5 vertebra on anteroposterior lumbar spine radiographs, and assessed its detection accuracy.
Methods: We retrospectively recruited 150 participants for whom both anteroposterior whole-spine and lumbar spine radiographs were available.

Here, we present a case of a 53-year-old female patient with chronic neck pain and systemic inflammation who was ultimately diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus. Notably, applying fat-suppressed T2-weighted MRI sequences was pivotal in detecting structural fascial changes commonly associated with systemic inflammatory diseases. PET-CT scans further revealed systemic inflammation around multiple joints, providing valuable insights into MRI signal alterations.

The Korean Association of Urogenital Tract Infection and Inflammation and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency updated the Korean sexually transmitted infections (STIs) guidelines to respond to the changing epidemiologic trends, evolving scientific evidence, and advances in laboratory diagnostics and research. The main recommendations in the infection parts of the Korean STIs guidelines 2023 revision are as follows: 1) For initial treatment: azithromycin 500 mg orally in a single dose, then 250 mg once daily for 4 days. 2) In case of treatment failure or recurrence, a macrolide susceptibility/resistance test is required, when susceptibility/resistance test is not feasible, doxycycline or minocycline 100 mg orally twice daily for 7 days, followed by azithromycin 1 g orally on the first day, then azithromycin 500 mg orally once daily for 3 days and then a test-of-cure should be considered 3 weeks after completion of therapy.

While simultaneous bilateral partial nephrectomy with a conventional multiport robot has been consistently reported since the 2010s, the introduction of the DaVinci SP system (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) could provide a novel way to perform surgery on bilateral kidneys while innovatively reducing the number of incisions. In our first report worldwide, the patient with bilateral small renal mass (2.0 cm for the left and 1.

Background: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a significant concern, particularly among patients taking bisphosphonates (BPs), denosumab, and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) for osteoporosis. Despite the known risks, large-scale cohort studies examining the incidence and severity of MRONJ are lacking. We aimed to ascertain the incidence and risk of MRONJ among these patients, whom we stratified by age groups, medication types, and duration of use.

A noncontact sensor field is an innovative device that can detect, measure, or monitor physical properties or conditions without direct physical contact with the subject or object under examination. These sensors use a variety of methods, including electromagnetic, optical, and acoustic technique, to collect information about the target without physical interaction. Noncontact sensors find wide-ranging applications in various fields such as manufacturing, robotics, automobiles, security, environmental monitoring, space industry, agriculture, and entertainment.

The prevalence of periodontitis and dyslipidemia continues to increase, and several studies have reported an association between the 2. Therefore, we assessed the relationship between periodontitis and hypertriglyceridemia using propensity score matching to efficiently address confounding factors, as well as complex sample analysis with data from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VII (2016-2018). To match the 1:1 ratio between the groups with and without periodontitis, the propensity scores of covariates, such as age, sex, education, income, smoking, drinking, obesity, and diabetes mellitus, were calculated using logistic regression.

Progression of β-cell loss in diabetes mellitus is significantly influenced by persistent hyperglycemia. At the cellular level, a number of signaling cascades affect the expression of apoptotic genes, ultimately resulting in β-cell failure; these cascades have not been elucidated. Mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) plays a central role in the detoxification of reactive aldehydes generated from endogenous and exogenous sources and protects against mitochondrial deterioration in cells.

Background: Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the most effective drugs for treating acid-related disorders. However, once-daily dosing with conventional PPIs fail to fully control acid secretion over 24 h. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of HIP1601 (dual delayed-release esomeprazole) and HGP1705 (delayed-release esomeprazole) in patients with erosive esophagitis (EE).

Methotrexate (MTX)-induced accelerated nodulosis (MIAN) reportedly occurs in patients with rheumatic arthritis receiving MTX therapy. However, it has also been reported in patients with other autoinflammatory conditions, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A 38-year-old woman diagnosed with SLE presented with multiple movable, firm, flesh-colored nodules on both hands that had developed 3 years ago.

C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) is a key regulator in ER stress-mediated signaling pathway via PERK-dependent unfolded protein response. It has been known that microRNA-616 (miR-616) is produced from the intron of the human DDIT3 gene encoding CHOP and increased by ER stress. However, the role of miR-616 and its targets are not fully addressed yet.

Researchers are increasingly interested in cell therapy using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as an alternative remedy for osteoporosis, with fewer side effects. Thus, we isolated and characterized extracellular vesicles (EVs) from human adipose tissue-derived MSCs (hMSCs) and investigated their inhibitory effects on RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation. Purified EVs were collected from the supernatant of hMSCs by tangential flow filtration.
