Unlabelled: Teriparatide and denosumab, anti-osteoporosis medications with different mechanisms, have been widely used in the patients with osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) considered as advanced osteoporosis. Teriparatide has been shown to enhance bone formation and fracture healing in OVF, but there are still no sufficient evidences discussing about the role of denosumab in newly developed OVF. In this study, we found the similar radiological deformation and functional outcomes of conservative treatment with teriparatide and denosumab in thoracolumbar (TL) OVF, and teriparatide showed a more frequent incidence of fracture union with paravertebral bone bridge formation compared to denosumab.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the prognosis of cirrhotic patients following their first acute decompensation (AD) episode, categorizing outcomes into four groups: stable decompensated cirrhosis (SDC), unstable decompensated cirrhosis (UDC), pre acute-on-chronic liver failure (pre ACLF), and ACLF.
  • The research involved a cohort of 746 patients and identified risk factors for readmission after AD, revealing that pre ACLF has a worse prognosis than ACLF despite occurring later.
  • Factors such as non-variceal gastrointestinal bleeding and hepatic encephalopathy significantly increase readmission risk, with viral causes linked to poorer outcomes compared to alcohol-related cases.

The prevalence of periodontitis and dyslipidemia continues to increase, and several studies have reported an association between the 2. Therefore, we assessed the relationship between periodontitis and hypertriglyceridemia using propensity score matching to efficiently address confounding factors, as well as complex sample analysis with data from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VII (2016-2018). To match the 1:1 ratio between the groups with and without periodontitis, the propensity scores of covariates, such as age, sex, education, income, smoking, drinking, obesity, and diabetes mellitus, were calculated using logistic regression.

Innovative Center for Aging Research, Yeungnam University Medical Center, Daegu, Republic of Korea; Department of Internal Medicine, Yeungnam University College of Medicine, Daegu, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Progression of β-cell loss in diabetes mellitus is significantly influenced by persistent hyperglycemia. At the cellular level, a number of signaling cascades affect the expression of apoptotic genes, ultimately resulting in β-cell failure; these cascades have not been elucidated. Mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) plays a central role in the detoxification of reactive aldehydes generated from endogenous and exogenous sources and protects against mitochondrial deterioration in cells.
