Aging is associated with muscle atrophy and fatty infiltration of skeletal muscle. The multifidus muscle stabilizes the lumbar spine and undergoes adipose accumulation with age, leading to functional decline in the elderly. Therefore, quantitative assessment of the multifidus muscle can be beneficial for the elderly when formulating treatment strategies and reducing future complications.

Exosomal miR-184 in the aqueous humor of patients with central serous chorioretinopathy: a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker.

J Nanobiotechnology

July 2023

Department of Ophthalmology, Asan Medical Center, College of Medicine, University of Ulsan, 88, Olympic-Ro 43-Gil, Songpa-Gu, Seoul, 05505, South Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • CSC (Central serous chorioretinopathy) is a prevalent retinal disease linked to age-related macular degeneration, but its causes and treatment targets require further investigation.
  • Researchers analyzed exosomal microRNA in the aqueous humor of 62 eyes (42 with CSC and 20 controls) using next-generation sequencing (NGS) to discover potential biomarkers related to CSC progression.
  • The study identified 12 upregulated and 17 downregulated miRNAs in CSC patients, with miR-184 emerging as a notable candidate that inhibits the growth and migration of choroidal endothelial cells, suggesting it could be a biomarker for assessing treatment responses in CSC patients.

Background: Hemodynamic variations during the induction of general anesthesia are more profound in hypertensive patients, and the risk of hypoperfusion-induced organ damage followed by hypotensive episodes is higher in hypertensive patients than in normotensive patients. Thus, we compared the effects of remimazolam and propofol on hemodynamics during general anesthesia induction in hypertensive patients.

Methods: Patients were randomly divided into the remimazolam (Group R, n = 48) and propofol (Group P, n = 48) groups: remimazolam was continued at 6 mg/kg/hour until the patient lost consciousness, followed by 1 mg/kg/hour until 5 minutes after tracheal intubation.

Purpose: To compare the clinical aspects and treatment outcomes of contact lens-related bacterial keratitis (CLBK) and non-CLBK patients.

Methods: Altogether 217 patients of bacterial keratitis (CLBK; 62, non-CLBK; 155) hospitalized between January 2012 and December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed for epidemiology, microbiological profiles, predisposing factors, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcomes. Poor treatment outcomes (PTO) were defined as a final BCVA < 0.

Background: It has been reported that structure damage in the parenchymal lung disease such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is associated with high susceptibility to nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection. Radiologic features of NTM lung disease in destructive lung parenchyma can be atypical, which can cause confusion with other diseases including malignancy. Prompt and accurate identification of newly developed lesions in the follow-up computed tomography (CT) of IPF patients is challenging but crucial.

Background: The purpose of this study was to introduce the surgical technique using long locking plate and locking attachment plate (LAP) in patient with periprosthetic femoral fracture around ipsilateral stem after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Moreover, we sought to investigate the outcomes of this fixation technique and to propose a new subtype in the existing classification of periprosthetic femoral fractures.

Methods: From January 2013 to January 2022, thirty-four consecutive periprosthetic femoral fractures around ipsilateral stem following TKA with minimum 1-year follow-up were enrolled in this study.

We investigated predictors of visual outcomes and injection interval in macular edema (ME) secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) treated with a treat-and-extend (TAE) regimen. All 48 patients in a multicenter study were followed for 52 weeks and received three monthly intravitreal aflibercept injections before the TAE regimen, with treatment intervals adjusted by 4 weeks, up to a maximum of 16 weeks. Various laboratory biomarkers and optical coherence tomography parameters were evaluated.

J Hosp Infect

September 2023

Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Background: Despite the growing clinical and economic burden of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), data on CDI in the intensive care unit (ICU) in the Asia-Pacific region are lacking.

Methods: This retrospective study analysed 191 patients who were treated with CDI in the ICUs of three hospitals in South Korea from January 2017 to May 2021. Backward-stepwise multiple logistic regression was used to identify factors influencing the treatment response and mortality.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), previously known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy and causalgia, is a clinical entity characterized by classic neuropathic pain, autonomic involvement, motor symptoms, and trophic changes in the skin, nails, and hair. Although various therapeutic modalities are used to control CRPS-related pain, severe pain due to CRPS often persists and progresses to the chronic phase. In this study, we constructed an algorithm for multimodal medication therapy for CRPS based on the established pathology of CRPS.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for advanced knee osteoarthritis (OA), and to assess whether sarcopenia accompanying OA affects patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after TKA. We evaluated which predisposing factors could influence the development of sarcopenia in patients with advanced knee OA. A total of 445 patients whose body composition, muscle strength, and physical performance could be measured before primary TKA were enrolled.
