This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of out-of-office blood pressure (BP) measurements in patients with apparent treatment-resistant hypertension (aRH) enrolled from 15 tertiary care centers in South Korea. aRH was defined as having uncontrolled office BP ≥ 130/80 mmHg despite receiving three classes of antihypertensive medication or any level of BP despite receiving ≥4 classes of antihypertensive medication. Patients with complete data for office BP, 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM), and home BP measurements at baseline were included.

Purpose: The nProfiler 1 Stomach Cancer Assay (nProfiler1), designed to predict responses to fluorouracil-based adjuvant chemotherapy, measures the expression of four gastric cancer target genes (GZMB, WARS, SFRP4, and CDX1). The randomized phase III POST trial aimed to compare the efficacies of two adjuvant S-1-based doublet chemotherapies: S-1 plus cisplatin (SP) and S-1 plus docetaxel (DS). This study aimed to validate the nProfiler1 assay using a distinct cohort from the POST trial.

Comparison of clinical outcomes based on dialysis modality and icodextrin usage in patients on peritoneal dialysis.

Kidney Res Clin Pract

November 2024

Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine, Yeungnam University College of Medicine, Daegu, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the survival benefits of automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) compared to continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), focusing on the effects of using icodextrin, with 148 patients categorized into four groups based on their treatment type over one year.
  • - Results indicated that the use of icodextrin in CAPD (CAPD+ET) had better patient survival rates than APD without icodextrin (APD-ET), although the differences were not statistically significant, particularly among non-diabetic patients.
  • - The findings suggest that APD without icodextrin may lead to poorer patient and technique survival due to challenges in volume control, particularly highlighted by a higher edema index

Efficacy and safety of radial probe endobronchial ultrasound-guided biopsy for peripheral lung lesions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

Transl Lung Cancer Res

October 2024

Division of Pulmonology and Allergy, Department of Internal Medicine, Yeungnam University College of Medicine, Yeungnam University Hospital, Daegu, Republic of Korea.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with frequent complications after transthoracic biopsy. Radial probe endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial lung biopsy (RP-EBUS-TBLB) is widely used to diagnose peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPLs). However, the efficacy and safety of this procedure for the diagnosis of PPLs in patients with COPD remain poorly understood.

Background/aims: We previously reported that patients with moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis (UC) often experience common mental disorders (CMDs) such as anxiety and depression, necessitating immediate psychological interventions within the first 4 weeks of diagnosis. In this 3-year follow-up study of the MOSAIK cohort in Korea, we examined the effects of CMDs at initial diagnosis on clinical outcomes and health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Methods: We examined differences in clinical outcomes (evaluated based on clinical response, relapse, hospitalization, and medication use) and HRQoL (assessed using the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire [IBDQ] and Short Form 12 [SF-12]) according to Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores at diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - Hepatic pseudolesions are common findings on contrast-enhanced imaging due to the liver's unique blood flow patterns and can also appear on liver scans due to unusual collateral circulation.
  • - A case is presented involving a patient with lung cancer who showed increased metabolic activity in specific liver areas on FDG PET/CT, which matched areas of increased density on a CT scan of the chest.
  • - This abnormal hypermetabolic activity disappeared on a follow-up FDG PET/CT scan taken two days later after changes were made to how the tracer was administered.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the visual outcomes and quality of an enhanced monofocal intraocular lens (IOL), compared to a conventional monofocal IOL in patients with epiretinal membrane (ERM). This retrospective comparative study reviewed medical records of 110 eyes of 110 patients with photoreceptor-preserving ERM (55 patients in each group) who underwent phacovitrectomy and received either a conventional monofocal IOL (Tecnis PCB00) or an enhanced monofocal IOL (Tecnis Eyhance ICB00) from March 2021 to October 2021. Baseline examination included corrected (CDVA) and uncorrected (UDVA) distance visual acuity, and measurement of pupil size.

Screening and treatment of endocrine hypertension focusing on adrenal gland disorders: a narrative review.

J Yeungnam Med Sci

October 2024

Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Internal Medicine, Yeungnam University College of Medicine, Daegu, Korea.

Most cases of high blood pressure have no identifiable cause, termed essential hypertension; however, in approximately 15% of cases, hypertension occurs due to secondary causes. Primary aldosteronism (PA) and pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) are representative endocrine hypertensive diseases. The differentiation of endocrine hypertension provides an opportunity to cure and prevent target organ damage.
