Objectives: To determine the effects of hyperandrogenemia and other phenotypic parameters on endometrial vitamin D receptor (VDR-X2 and VDR-X4) expression in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) undergoing ovarian stimulation and total embryo freezing.

Methods: Forty-four PCOS patients were divided into four phenotypes according to the criteria for hyperandrogenemia (HA), ovulatory dysfunction (OD), and polycystic ovary morphology (PCOM): phenotype A (HA+OD+PCOM), phenotype B (HA+OD), phenotype C (HA+PCOM), and phenotype D (OD+PCOM). Endometrial VDR expression was determined by real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Accompanied by Hyperandrogenemia or Metabolic Syndrome Triggers Glomerular Podocyte Injury.

Diagnostics (Basel)

October 2024

Department of Anatomy, Histology, Pathology, and Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski", 1407 Sofia, Bulgaria.

To determine whether the urinary excretion of podocyte degradation products varies according to PCOS phenotype and metabolic syndrome (MetS). The concentrations of podocalyxin (PDX) and nephrin, chronic markers of podocyte damage, and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), a marker of acute glomerular damage, were analyzed in the morning urine samples of 50 PCOS patients and 50 healthy controls matched by age and BMI. Albuminuria was assessed by calculating the urine albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR).

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated the choroidal vascular features of patients with different types of headaches, including migraines with and without aura, episodic tension-type headaches, and healthy individuals, using advanced imaging techniques like OCT.
  • - A total of 100 participants were analyzed, focusing on parameters such as refraction values, axial length, intraocular pressure, and various choroidal metrics in specific eye regions, and results showed that the luminance area (LA) was significantly lower in those with migraines with visual aura.
  • - Despite the lower LA in the migraine group, other choroidal parameters and measurements of the retinal nerve fiber layer did not show any significant differences among the headache types, indicating a need for further research to understand these

Background: A fine-tuned pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory balance in the follicular unit is essential for cumulus expansion and successful ovulation. While the long pentraxin 3 (PTX3) gene is required for the expansion of cumulus cells (CCs), ovulation, resumption of meiosis and fertilization, the vitamin D receptor gene (VDR-X2) is required for intra-follicle redox balance. This study was planned to determine the expression pattern of VDR-X2 and PTX3 mRNA in CCs isolated from germinal vesicle (GV), metaphase I (MI), and metaphase II (MII) oocytes of PCOS patients with ovulatory dysfunction.

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry, Firat Hormones Research Group, Medical School, Firat University, Elazig, Turkiye.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a prevalent public health problem. Uric acid (UA) is increased by MetS. We investigated whether administration of UA and 10% fructose (F) would accelerate MetS formation and we also determined the effects of irisin and exercise.

Evaluation of thiol/disulfide homeostasis in rheumatoid arthritis and disease activity.

Clin Biochem

January 2023

Department of Medical Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine Ankara City Hospital, Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, Ankara, Turkey.

Background: It has been suggested that the deterioration in the antioxidant defense system due to thiols may cause the pro-oxidant/antioxidant imbalance seen in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study was conducted to evaluate thiol/disulfide (-SH/-SS) homeostasis in patients with RA compared to healthy controls, and to validate the limited number of studies examining the relationship between Disease Activity Score-28 (DAS28) and thiol parameters.

Method: A total of 100 individuals (mean age: 46.

Purpose: The molecules human interleukin (IL-18), the soluble cluster of differentiation (sCD40), platelet factor 4 variant 1 (PF4V1), and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) are all markers of inflammation in biological systems and are linked to prognosis in several inflammatory diseases as well. Since there is no study in which the above-mentioned molecules are studied together in ocular Behçet's disease (OBD), the aim of this study is to reveal whether these molecules are activity markers in active (OABD) and inactive (OIBD) disease.

Methods: 30 OABD and 30 OIBD and 30 healthy individuals were included in the study.

J Fr Ophtalmol

March 2022

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry, (Firat Hormones Research Group), Medical School, Firat University, Elazig, Turkey. Electronic address:

Purpose: Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is an eye disease of unknown etiology that presents with reduced visual acuity, choroidal thickening (distance between Bruch's membrane and the chorioscleral border), and subretinal fluid leakage. In the present study, the goal was to investigate the role of the interrelated tenascin C, metalloprotein-1, BAX, BCL2, subfatin and asprosin molecules in the pathogenesis of CSCR.

Method: Thirty CSCR patients and 30 controls were included.

Introduction: Kidneys are the most frequently injured organ in the genitourinary system, but there is no specific biological marker for this trauma. Renalase may be a descriptive biomarker of the pathology that causes renal ischemia, nephrotoxicity, and acute renal failure.

Objective: This study investigated the role of serum and urine levels of renalase for the diagnosis of renal injury in rats with experimentally induced blunt renal trauma.

Peptides

April 2020

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry, (Firat Hormones Research Group), School of Medicine, Firat University, 23119 Elazig, Turkey. Electronic address:

Subfatin and spexin are two novel adipokines implicated in glucose homeostasis. This study was designed to investigate changes in blood subfatin and spexin levels during gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and childbirth, and define the mechanisms of these hormones in the physiopathology of GDM. A total of 60 pregnant women, comprising 30 diagnosed with GDM and 30 with normal gestation, were included in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found that special molecules called miRNAs are different in different types of breast cancer, which might affect how the cancer grows and spreads.
  • They studied 84 different miRNAs in samples from patients with two types of breast cancer: one focused in one spot (unifocal) and the other spread out (multicentric).
  • The results showed some miRNAs were more active in one type of cancer than the other, helping doctors understand how to better diagnose and treat breast cancer for each patient.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent approvals of novel oral anticoagulants (rivaroxaban, dabigatran, apixaban) for pulmonary embolism treatment introduce different cost implications for healthcare systems.
  • A study evaluated costs of anticoagulant treatments in 118 patients previously treated with warfarin, comparing direct and modeled costs for both maintenance and initial therapy.
  • The findings indicate that maintenance therapy with novel oral anticoagulants is generally cheaper than warfarin, especially for patients with low complication risks who can avoid hospitalization.
