A risk-scoring system to predict dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease in patients with atopic dermatitis.

Front Pharmacol

August 2024

College of Pharmacy and Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Dupilumab is the first biological treatment for atopic dermatitis (AD), but it can lead to a common side effect called dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease (DAOSD), prompting this study to identify associated risk factors.
  • A retrospective analysis of 97 adult patients at Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital found that 28.9% developed DAOSD, with older age, history of conjunctivitis, and a high Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) score being key independent risk factors.
  • A risk-scoring system based on these factors was created, indicating varying probabilities of developing DAOSD, which can help healthcare providers identify patients who may need closer monitoring when starting dupilumab treatment.

Department of Psychiatry, Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, 10, 63-Ro, Yeongdeungpo-Gu, Seoul, 06591, Republic of Korea.

Despite the growing interest in precision medicine-based therapies for Alzheimer's disease (AD), little research has been conducted on how individual AD risk factors influence changes in cognitive function following transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). This study evaluates the cognitive effects of sequential tDCS on 63 mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients, considering AD risk factors such as amyloid-beta deposition, APOE ε4, BDNF polymorphism, and sex. Using both frequentist and Bayesian methods, we assessed the interaction of tDCS with these risk factors on cognitive performance.

Biofabrication

August 2024

Division of Pulmonology, Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

This study proposed an optimized histogel construction method for histological analysis by applying lung cancer patient-derived organoids (PDOs) to the developed histo-pillar strip. Previously, there is the cultured PDOs damage problem during the histogel construction due to forced detachment of the Matrigel spots from the 96-well plate bottom. To address this issue, we cultured PDO on the proposed Histo-pillar strips and then immersed them in 4% paraformaldehyde fixation solution to self-isolate PDO without damage.
