The attitudes of Turkish physicians in the treatment of fibromyalgia; is 'Pregabalinophobia' the new reality of pain medicine?

Objectives: This study aims to determine the treatment preferences of physicians interested in fibromyalgia treatment and to investigate their hesitations about prescribing pregabalin.

Methods: Our survey study was conducted between February 5 and 20, 2021. The survey forms were sent to the known email addresses and phone numbers of 1569 physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR), algology, and rheumatology physicians.

Actions of N-acetylcysteine, daptomycin, vancomycin, and linezolid on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus biofilms in the ventriculoperitoneal shunt infections: an experimental study.

Background: Shunt systems are used to provide cerebrospinal fluid drainage in the treatment of hydrocephalus. Recently, antibiotic-impregnated shunt systems are used to prevent colonization in the ventriculoperitoneal catheters. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the most common causative microorganism of shunt infections.

Ulipristal-temozolomide-hydroxyurea combination for glioblastoma: in-vitro studies.

Background: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a brain malignancy with worst survival. Low dose progesterone stimulates GBM growth, while progesterone receptor (PR)-antagonist mifepristone was shown to reduce growth and to enhance temozolomide sensitivity in GBM cells. Mifepristone is not available in all countries due to ethical reasons and may cause adrenal insufficiency and pelvic infections.

Effect of oxytocin pretreatment on the development of morphine tolerance and dependence in rats.

Increased opioid synthesis and release, and enhanced alpha-2 adrenoceptor signaling have been suggested to mediate repeated oxytocin-induced long-lasting effects including elevated pain threshold in rats. This study evaluated whether oxytocin pretreatment would influence development of dependence and tolerance to the nociceptive and body temperature responses to morphine and enhance effects of alpha-2 adrenergic agonist clonidine on nociceptive threshold, body temperature and morphine withdrawal signs. Rats injected subcutaneously with saline or 1 mg/kg oxytocin for 5 days were implanted with placebo or morphine pellets 24 h after the treatment period.

The Evaluation of Depression Levels and Domestic Violence during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

This study aims to compare the depression levels and the frequency of domestic violence cases with the parameters that can alter those levels and frequencies. Studies on people living in quarantine conditions at home during the Covid 19 Pandemic show that violence has increased. However, the literature shows lack of similar studies in Turkey.

The Relationship Between Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo and Vitamin D.

Introduction Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a type of vertigo and its signs are short-time, severe attacks that occur in certain head and body positions. Recent studies have revealed that vitamin D deficiency correlates with BPPV and this is explained by cupulolithiasis and canalithiasis theories. Method In the present study, levels of serum vitamin D in the patients who were diagnosed as BPPV and those in the control group consisting of healthy individuals were investigated.

Multigene Panel Testing in Turkish Hereditary Cancer Syndrome Patients.

Objective: Hereditary cancer syndromes (HCSs) are a heterogenous group of disorders caused by germline pathogenic variations in various genes that function in cell growth and proliferation. Aim: To evaluate the patients who had epilepsy surgery and pathologically proven focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) in order to further classify and discuss electroencephalography (EEG) findings in different pathological subtypes.

Material And Methods: This study included 19 refractory epilepsy patients who underwent surgery between 1999 and 2017 in the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. Demographic data, preoperative examinations, scalp video EEGs, and postoperative outcomes were evaluated retrospectively.

Expression of periostin according to endometrial cancer grade.

While various molecular profiling methods have been described for the early diagnosis and prognostic process of endometrial cancer, the most common gynaecological cancer, the data obtained remain insufficient. The present study aimed to investigate the protein and gene expression of periostin and its role as a new biomarker in the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of endometrial cancer. A total of 15 patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer at the Department of Pathology, Zeynep Kamil Training and Research Hospital (Istanbul, Turkey) and 15 patients who were operated on for non-tumour-related reasons, between December 2019 and May 2020, were included in the study.

Arthroscopic Dorsal Ligamentocapsulodesis in the Treatment of Isolated Lunotriquetral Interosseous Ligamentous Injury: A Retrospective Case Series of 22 Patients.

The literature is scarce regarding isolated tears of lunotriquetral interosseous ligament (LTIL). The purpose of this study was to present mid-term clinical and functional results of arthroscopic dorsal ligamentocapsulodesis in the treatment of isolated LTIL tears. Twenty-two patients (8 females, 14 males; mean age: 31 years; age range: 18-42) with isolated LTIL tears verified by wrist arthroscopy were retrospectively reviewed and included in the study.

Safety, Efficacy, and Cost-Effectiveness of Simultaneous Bilateral Arthroscopic Bankart Repair for Bilateral Shoulder Instability.

Background: Bilateral shoulder instability and Bankart lesions are not rare and frequently require surgical treatment. Bilateral instability may be treated with either a single-stage, simultaneous bilateral Bankart repair or 2-stage surgery.

Trigeminal neuralgia as a complication after anterior temporal lobectomy: A case report.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is one of the most common forms of focal epilepsy. Anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) leading to high rate of seizure freedom is a safe and well-established procedure in TLEs. Cranial nerve deficits, especially for oculomotor, trochlear and facial nerve were reported as a complication after ATL.

The effect of vitamin D replacement in patients with lower urinary tract complaint/erectile dysfunction resistant to Tadalafil 5 mg treatment: A pilot clinical study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of vitamin D replacement in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)/erectile dysfunction (ED) who did not respond to tadalafil 5 mg treatment. Patients who applied to the Andrology Clinic with LUTS/ED between September 2017 and August 2020 and used 5 mg Tadalafil daily for treatment and did not benefit from treatment for 1 month were included in the study. Vitamin D levels of the patients were analysed and Vitamin D3 100,000 IU/week oral therapy was administered for a month to the patients with low levels of Vitamin D(<20 ng/ml).

The cryoprotective potential of propolis supplemented in frozen-thawed bull semen; biochemical and physiological findings.

In this study, the cryoprotective effect of different doses of propolis (P) on bull semen, which has solid pharmacological properties thanks to its rich phenolic components, was investigated biochemically and physiologically. Semen samples were collected from Simmental breed bulls via the artificial vagina and pooled. After dividing into five groups, control (C: no additive) and four different P (200, 100, 50, and 25 μg/mL) groups, the final concentration was diluted to 16×106 per straw.

COVID-19 in Kidney Transplant Recipients: A Multicenter Experience from the First Two Waves of Pandemic.

Background: Kidney transplant recipients have an increased risk of complications from COVID-19. However, data on the risk of allograft damage or death in kidney transplant recipients recovering from COVID-19 is limited. In addition, the first and second waves of the pandemic occurred at different times all over the world.

Middle-term outcomes in renal transplant recipients with COVID-19: a national, multicenter, controlled study.

Background: In this study, we evaluated 3-month clinical outcomes of kidney transplant recipients (KTR) recovering from COVID-19 and compared them with a control group.

Method: The primary endpoint was death in the third month. Secondary endpoints were ongoing respiratory symptoms, need for home oxygen therapy, rehospitalization for any reason, lower respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, biopsy-proven acute rejection, venous/arterial thromboembolic event, cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection/disease and BK viruria/viremia at 3 months.

Role of chemokines in early pregnancy loss.

The present study aimed to compare decidual protein levels and gene expression levels of chemokines between patients with early pregnancy loss and those with voluntary abortion. A total of 15 patients between 6 and 10 gestational weeks, who presented with negative fetal heartbeat to the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics of Gaziosmanpasa Hospital (Yeni Yuzyil University, Istanbul, Turkey) and who had no additional systemic disease and 13 patients between 6 and 10 gestational weeks, who presented with positive fetal heartbeat for voluntary abortion were included in the present study. CX3CL1, CCL17, CXCR4, chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12) and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)5 protein expression levels were determined by ELISA and gene expression levels by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR in fresh materials recovered after therapeutic curettage.

Relationship of interferon regulator factor 5 and interferon-γ with missed abortion.

The aim of the present study was to reveal the association of missed abortion, a process integrated with the immune system, with interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and to demonstrate the function of these molecules by examining their levels in decidual tissue. This prospective cohort study included 13 patients with no additional systemic disease, between 6 and 10 weeks of gestation with negative fetal heartbeat, and 11 patients between 6 and 10 weeks of gestation with positive heartbeat who presented for voluntary termination of pregnancy. In the fresh decidual tissue materials recovered after therapeutic curettage, IFN-γ and IRF5 protein levels were determined by ELISA method and IFN-γ and IRF5 gene expression levels by qPCR method.

A new posterior stabilization technique in pediatric subaxial cervical vertebrae: Stabilization of spinous processes with the microplate/screw system: A radiological anatomy study.

Background: There are limited options for posterior stabilization techniques in cases of cervical subaxial instability in children. We designed this study to investigate whether the spinous process (SP) stabilization, which was previously used in adults, can also be used in children.
