November 2022

Department of Reproduction and Artificial Insemination, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Aksaray University, Aksaray, Turkey.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of thymoquinone (TQ), which is the most essential active compound of Nigella sativa, on the spermatological parameters of ram semen during cryopreservation. Ejaculates were collected from five Sonmez rams using an artificial vagina and extended with Tris-based extender not containing TQ (control, 0 μg/ml TQ) and containing 10, 25, 50 and 100 μg/ml TQ. The extended semen samples were equilibrated in a + 4°C cold cabinet for 2 h.

We aimed to evaluate the levels of Spermidine, Syndecan 1, and Glypican 3 (GPC3) in the follicle fluid of women with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) and to examine the relationship of these markers with the number of embryos and clinical pregnancy. A total of 27 women with DOR and 34 women with normal ovarian reserve who underwent in vitro fertilization procedure were included in this prospectively designed study. Spermidine, Syndecan 1, and GPC3 levels were studied in the follicle fluid samples taken from the women at the time of oocyte retrieval by ELISA method, and their relations with the cycle outcomes were examined.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the use of F-FDG PET/MRI combined with EEG to analyze the metabolic patterns in patients with gray matter heterotopia (GMH) and epilepsy.
  • The research involved 30 patients, evaluating the metabolism of heterotopic nodules and identifying the epileptogenic zone (EZ) through imaging and clinical methods.
  • Results showed varied metabolic activity in heterotopic nodules, with a strong correlation between imaging findings and the clinical EZ in most cases, indicating the significance of F-FDG PET/MRI in epilepsy assessment.

Intervertebral kinematics during neck motion 6.5 years after fusion and artificial disc replacement.

Clin Biomech (Bristol)

October 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Henry Ford Health System, Detroit, MI, USA.

Background: Arthroplasty with artificial disc replacement for surgical treatment of cervical spine degeneration was introduced with the notion that motion-preserving approaches would prevent development of adjacent segment disease. Though clinical outcomes favor arthroplasty over the commonly used anterior cervical discectomy with fusion approach, clinical studies confirming the biomechanical basis of these results are lacking. The aim of this study was to compare intervertebral kinematics between arthroplasty and fusion patients 6.

Ulus Travma Acil Cerrahi Derg

September 2022

Department of General Surgery, İzmir Tınaztepe University Faculty of Medicine, Galenos Hospital, İzmir-Türkiye.

Background: In acute obstructive left-sided colorectal cancers (AOLCRC), damage to the colon wall may occur as a result of distension of the colon segments proximal to the tumor. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the ratio of dilated colon diameter (CD) to lumbar vertebral corpus diameter on preoperative abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan in patients undergoing Hartmann's Procedure (HP) and post-operative complications.

Methods: The tumor group consisted of 49 patients who underwent HP for AOLCRC under emergency conditions.

Introduction: Fertilin β is a sperm surface protein that can mediate sperm-egg membrane interaction. This study was conducted to determine whether the expression of fertilin β after intrauterine insemination (IUI) in donors with normal parameters after standard semen analysis is related to low success rate or failure of fertilization.

Methods: We examined the sperm of 30 male donors who have normal as controls, oligozoospermia, and unexplained infertility as the clinically indication for IUI.

Methicillin‑resistant (MRSA) infections are usually found in hospital settings and, frequently, in patients with open wounds. One of the most critical virulence factors affecting the severity and recurrence of infections is the biofilm; increasing antibiotic resistance due to biofilm formation has led to the search for alternative compounds to antibiotics. The present study aimed to use boric acid and potassium metaborate against MRSA infection in a fibroblast wound model.
