Division of Pediatric Metabolism, Faculty of Medicine, Kocaeli University, İzmit, Kocaeli, Türkiye.

Objectives: MEGDHEL [3-methylglutaconic aciduria (MEG), deafness (D), hepatopathy (H), encephalopathy (E), and Leigh-like disease (L)] syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the serine active site-containing protein 1 () gene. MEGDHEL syndrome is clinically characterized by sensorineural hearing loss, encephalopathy, hepatopathy, 3-methylglutaconic aciduria, and Leigh-like lesions on cranial magnetic resonance imaging. During the neonatal period, it has been reported to present with hypoglycemia, hyperammonemia, impaired liver functions, cholestasis, metabolic acidosis, and sepsis-like clinical findings.

December 2022

Istanbul Yeni Yuzyil University, Faculty of Medicine, Gaziosmanpasa Hospital, Cardiology Department, Gaziosmanpasa, Istanbul, Turkey.

A 55-year-old male patient presented with a history of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation due to ischemic cardiomyopathy. Low-flow alarms were detected on the LVAD, which was temporarily stopped to demonstrate retrograde flow from the aorta through the outflow graft. Selective visualization was performed after engagement of a pigtail catheter in the outflow graft.

Chronic pansinusitis is a mucosal inflammation of the nose and all paranasal sinuses with severe inflammation of the upper airways. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is associated with oxidative stress. In this study, we aimed to examine the plasma levels and importance of ADMA and nitric oxide (NO) in patients with chronic pansinusitis.

Purpose: Continuous oxygen therapy to compensate for decreased oxygen saturation in the blood is a life-saving treatment used in case lung involvement. Excess oxygen delivery was reported to be a common situation, in which about 50% of the patients showed hyperoxemia and 4% in severe hyperoxemia. In this work, we investigated the effects of hyperoxia on the rat kidneys and whether tadalafil has an effect to reduce this damage.

Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, Faculty of Health Sciences, Yeni Yüzyıl University, Istanbul, Turkey; Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Liv Hospital Ulus, Istanbul, Turkey. Electronic address:

Background: Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been widely used in orthopedic surgery with the aim of reducing intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, as well as bleeding-related complications. The purpose of this study was to assess whether intra-articular use of TXA during arthroscopic rotator cuff tear (RCT) repair could improve visual clarity, shorten the duration of the operation, and provide superior pain management as compared with placebo.

Methods: We conducted a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

We conducted this study to determine the potential cryopreservative effects of different hesperidin (vitamin P; H) doses on ram semen after freeze-thawing. Semen samples were obtained from Sönmez rams using an artificial vagina. The samples were divided into six groups: control, 10, 50, 100, 250, and 500 µg/mL H (C, H10, H50, H100, H250, and H500, respectively).

Glutamate, one of the most important excitatory neurotransmitters, acts as a signal transducer in peripheral tissues and endocrine cells. Excessive glutamate secretion has been shown to cause excitotoxicity and neurodegenerative disease. Cerebrolysin is a mixture of enzymatically treated peptides derived from pig brain including neurotrophic factors, like brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), and ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF).

Alpha-terpineol, popular monoterpenoid alcohol, is known to cause cytotoxicity in a few cancer cells or to have antioxidant activity, but underlying mechanisms or apoptotic processes in yeast cell death should be understood. We used the fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe) as a unicellular model to monitor cellular toxicology and physiological mechanisms for the involvement of alpha-terpineol in cell death. Alpha-terpineol caused Reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction and following cytotoxicity and apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner.

Hypertension, as a primary risk factor for many fatal disorders, is prevalent in the elderly. There is wide literature on hypertension dealing with its biological and/or biochemical aspects; however, limited research is available on the multifactorial nature of hypertension from a mechanobiological standpoint. This study intended to study in parallel histopathological alterations and deviated protein expressions with the mechanical behavior of the hypertensive tissues.

Spontaneous rectus sheath hematoma in three patients with COVID-19: Computed tomography findings.

Ulus Travma Acil Cerrahi Derg

November 2022

Department of Anesthesia and Reanimation, İstanbul Yeni Yüzyıl University, Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital, İstanbul-Türkiye.

The pulmonary symptoms secondary to severe acute respiratory syndrome in coronavirus (COVID-19) infections are the most common presentation for the disease; however, it is now known that in a small portion of patients, severe hemorrhagic complications can also be seen. In this report, three cases of elderly women with known COVID-19 infection, developing spontaneous rectus sheath hematoma on anticoagulation therapy, are presented. Three cases presented above emphasize the need to perform a computed tomography examination after a sudden hemodynamic deterioration and a decrease in hemoglobin count in COVID-19 patients in intensive care units (ICUs).

Recombinant expression and purification of proteins have become a staple of modern drug discovery as it enables more precise in vitro analyses of drug targets, which may help obtain biochemical and biophysical parameters of a known enzyme and even uncover unknown characteristics indicative of novel enzymatic functions. Such information is often necessary to prepare adequate screening assays and drug-discovery experiments in general. Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate protozoan parasite that is a member of the phylum Apicomplexa, can develop several neuro-degenerative symptoms and, in specific cases, certain death for human hosts.

Tuberous sclerosis is a genetic multisystem disorder characterised by hamartomas in several organs. Cardiac rhabdomyomas are the main features of the disease but lipomas can very rarely be associated. Herein, we present a very rare association of tuberous sclerosis and cardiac lipoma detected by echocardiography and diagnosed as a lipoma via MRI and fat suppression technic, aim to report this very rare association, and emphasise usefulness of MRI in cardiac mass lesions.
