A patient with diabetic ketoacidosis admitted for treatment developed features characteristic of rhinocerebral mucormycosis, confirmed by histopathologic examination, is presented. The patient had been experiencing symptoms of diabetes for one month before presentation to the hospital in state of diabetic ketoacidosis. Within a few days of admission he developed mucormycosis of the nasal cavity and the orbit which extended to the brain very fast and resulted in death.

A case-control study on rickets was performed on 156 cases and 307 controls admitted to Birla pediatric wards, Yekatit 12 Hospital. The following factors were significantly (p < 0.05) associated with diagnosis of rickets in univariate analysis: male gender, being a twin, abnormal birth weight, malnutrition, higher birth order, higher number of siblings, having a caretaker who is not the mother, lower education of the caretaker, having a caretaker who is not housewife, and with protective effect, exposure to sunshine (in number of days per week, duration of daily exposure in minutes, and not wearing clothes during exposure).

Because the number of cases of multiforme skin lesions encountered in the medical department of Yekatit 12 Hospital has increased in recent years, we conducted a retrospective study to identify the likely precipitating factors and the possible relationship of these with HIV infection. Forty-seven patients with Multiforme Skin Lesions (29 males, 18 females) were admitted between 1976 and January 1994, of whom 43 (92%) were admitted in the past 5 years. By January 1990, over a period of 14 years, the Diabetic Clinic at Yekatit 12 Hospital, Addis Ababa had registered 1699 diabetic patients, of whom 204 were first diagnosed in or before 1969. Of these, 68 are known to have died after 11 to 36 years of diabetes (29% in renal failure), and 69 have been lost to follow-up for 3 or more years. Of the 121 who had been diabetic at least 20 years when last seen, 67 are attending, 18 are lost to follow-up, and 36 have died.

Although hospitalization of the diabetic may be seen as a failure of management, and places the patient in an artificial situation, admission for initiation of insulin therapy is the custom in most Ethiopian hospitals. From January 1987 to January 1988, 144 diabetics were taught insulin injection technique in the Diabetic Clinic of Yekatit 12 Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by two nurses in early morning, six days weekly, sessions. Of these, 85 were inpatients aged 6 to 73 years from all wards, admitted because of ketoacidosis, intercurrent illnesses or rural home.

In 239 pregnant women, 107 with preeclampsia and 132 controls, phenotype frequency distribution of serum group-specific component (Gc) and haptoglobin (Hp) was studied by disc-electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel. The results demonstrate a significant statistical difference in phenotype frequency distribution of the Gc-system. Gc 2-1 phenotype was expressed significantly in women with preeclampsia compared to controls.

Young diabetics in tropical countries are often undernourished, insulin-requiring and ketosis-resistant, and are sometimes considered to have a distinct type of diabetes. Therefore, a survey of young adult diabetics attending Yekatit 12 Hospital, Addis Ababa, was made to determine clinical features and the relation between their diabetes and their nutritional state. In May, 1988, 894 of 1490 registered diabetic patients were attending regularly, of whom 248 became diabetic between the ages of 15 and 35 years.

To define the prevalence of large vessel disease in Ethiopian diabetic patients, the protocol of the World Health Organisation Multinational Study of Vascular disease in Diabetics was used in the Diabetic Clinic of Yekatit 12 Hospital, Addis Ababa: 221 of the possible 261 patients aged 35 to 54 years were examined during 6 months. One hundred seven were diagnosed diabetic 1 to 6 years before study, 74, 7 to 13 years and 40, 14 years or more before the study.
