Cancer-related pain (CrP) is a significant public health problem, and opioids are the mainstay of CrP treatment. Considering the persistent problem of inadequate treatment of cancer pain in Turkey, the study was conducted to determine the prevalence of reluctance to prescribe opioids among physicians in oncology departments. The descriptive cross-sectional study included oncology residents and residents without oncology specialization in oncology departments.

Background/aim: MicroRNAs (miRNA) are a class of small non-coding RNAs of 18-25 nucleotides, which regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by disrupting or blocking translation of messenger RNA targets. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) represents approximately 85% of all lung cancers. Early and accurate diagnosis of the disease affects the probability of success of treatment.

Purpose: GOLD 2019 proposed a novel treatment decision tool for follow-up based on the predominant trait (exacerbation or dyspnea) of patients, alongside treatment escalation and de-escalation strategies. This study was designed to provide an up-to-date snapshot of patient and disease characteristics, treatment pathways, and healthcare resource use (HRU) in COPD in real life, and comprehensively examine patients considering GOLD 2019 recommendations.
Patients And Methods: This mixed design, observational, multicenter (14 pulmonology clinics) study included all patients with a documented COPD diagnosis (excluding asthma-COPD overlap [ACO]) for ≥12 months, aged ≥40 years at diagnosis who had a COPD-related hospital visit, spirometry test and blood eosinophil count (BEC) measurement under stable conditions within the 12 months before enrollment between February and December 2020.

Background: Sleep architecture and sleep hygiene might be disrupted by several pathogenetic mechanisms, and the effect of smoking has not been evaluated.
Objective: To investigate the effect of smoking on sleep hygiene behaviors that might be associated with the deterioration of quality-of-life (QoL) parameters.
Methods: In a prospective cross-sectional study, smokers (n=114) and nonsmokers (n=119) were included.

Both severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and influenza viruses cause similar clinical presentations. It is essential to assess severely ill patients presenting with a viral syndrome for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. We aimed to compare clinical and biochemical features between pneumonia patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and H1N1.

Background And Objectives: Selecting the diagnostic procedure for mediastinal restaging after chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy in Stage IIIA-N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients remains a problem. The aim of the study was to determine the efficacy of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) for the evaluation of mediastinal lymph nodes in the restaging of NSCLC patients.
Materials And Methods: The present multicentric study retrospectively analyzed the results of Stage IIIA-N2 NSCLC patients who had undergone EBUS for mediastinal restaging after preoperative chemotherapy or radiotherapy or both.

Background: To evaluate and compare the diagnostic efficiency of serum (s) and pleural (p) levels of adenosine deaminase (ADA)-1, ADA-2, total ADA, and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) for the differential diagnosis of pleural tuberculosis (TB).
Methods: Clinical and analytic data of 93 consecutive patients with pleural effusions from May 2012 to February 2013 were prospectively evaluated. The study population included 43 pleural TB, 23 malignancies, and 27 other exudates.

Background/aim: Heat-shock proteins (HSPs) are molecular chaperones which modify the structures and interactions of other proteins. The aim of our study was to investigate HSP90AA1, HSP90AB1 and HSP90B1 gene polymorphisms in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Materials And Methods: Ninety-seven patients with NSCLC and 97 healthy controls were included in the study.

Unlabelled: We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of measuring survivin levels, which is an inhibitor of apoptosis in pleural effusions.
Methods: Group I, malignant (MPE) (n = 51); Group II, tuberculosis (TPE) (n = 18); Group III transudative (TE) (n = 9) effusions were enrolled prospectively. We used ELISA to analyze 78 effusions.

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is now becoming a widely accepted procedure to investigate the mediastinum for the staging of non-small-cell lung cancer and diagnosing mediastinal lesions. During the intervention, some minor or major complications may occasionally occur. The present case report describes the first reported case of needle breakage during EBUS-TBNA.

Background: There are many causes of mediastinal and hilar lymphadenopathy, such as neoplasms, granulomatous diseases, infections and reactive hyperplasia. Nowadays, the popularity of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUSTBNA) is increasing in the diagnosis of mediastinal and hilar lymphadenopathy. We aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of EBUS-TBNA in patients with mediastinal and/or hilar lymphadenopathy and previously conventional TBNA-negative or inadequate results.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiological, bronchoscopic and histopathological features of patients with primary lung cancer.
Materials And Methods: 485 patients who were hospitalized in our clinic between July 2006 and December 2009 and diagnosed with lung cancer (LC) were evaluated retrospectively.
Results: The final diagnoses, established using various methods, were small cell LC for 62 patients, NSCLC of undetermined cell type for 191, epidermoid carcinoma for 148 patients, adenocarcinoma for 81 patients, and large cell LC for 3 patients.

Tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) is a common problem for differential diagnosis from malignant effusion (MPE) in epidemic areas of tuberculosis (TB). Prediction based on adenosine deaminase (ADA) is dependent on age as well as the tuberculosis incidence. The aim of the study was to evaluate cutoff values for ADA with sensitivity and specificity results for the differential diagnosis of MPE and TPE in a population with intermediate incidence of TB.

The pathogenesis of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is complex, involving multiple modulating genes and environmental factors. Multifactorial impairment of the physiologic balance can lead to vasoconstriction, vascular smooth muscle cell and endothelial cell proliferation/fibrosis, inflammation, remodeling and in-situ thrombosis. These are the likely mechanisms that lead to narrowing of the vessel followed by progressive increase in pulmonary vascular resistance and the clinical manifestations of pulmonary hypertension.
