Article Synopsis
  • Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) aims to alleviate pain and disability in patients with knee arthritis, but some experience persistent postoperative pain (PPP) even after surgery.
  • A study assessed 242 patients for various factors, measuring pain using the WOMAC index before and after surgery, and found that 13.22% and 9.09% still had moderate-to-severe pain after 6 and 12 months, respectively.
  • Key predictive factors for PPP included higher preoperative WOMAC scores, loosened prosthesis, and elevated anxiety and depression levels, highlighting the importance of psychological health in recovery outcomes.

Key Clinical Message: Malignancy may be a possible cause of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) flare-ups, and it is necessary to consider it in the context of treatment resistance. In this case, we present a challenging instance of concomitant nodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (NMZL) and SLE flare-up in a 41-year-old male patient.

Abstract: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause various symptoms and affect multiple organs in the body.

Scleritis is a rare complication of strabismus surgery. We present the case of an 11-year-old girl with Down syndrome who underwent strabismus surgery and developed bilateral symmetric nodular scleritis 3 weeks after surgery. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography revealed localized hyporeflective thickening of the sclera at the primary site of muscle insertion in both eyes.

Background: In this cross-sectional study, we compared fasting serum asprosin levels and metabolic parameters between patients receiving one of three atypical antipsychotics (olanzapine, risperidone, or aripiprazole) and healthy subjects.

Methods: The study population included 62 adult outpatients with schizophrenia and 22 healthy controls, matched for age and gender. Patients were in remission and had been on stable monotherapy with one of these atypical antipsychotics for over 6 months.

The effect of sitagliptin and empagliflozin on serum levels of asprosin and metabolic parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was assessed in a non-randomized, prospective observational study. Seventy-nine T2DM patients, without adequate glycemic control with metformin monotherapy, were included in the study. In addition to the ongoing metformin treatment, patients received sitagliptin 100 mg and empagliflozin 10 mg once daily for 12 weeks.

Background: The left ventricular dysfunction 36 (LVD-36) questionnaire is considered to be a tool to assess the impact of left ventricle impairment on patients' daily life. This methodological study was aimed to translate and assess the validity and reliability of the Persian draft of the LVD-36 questionnaire among Iranian heart failure (HF) patients.

Methods: We recruited stable HF patients who referred to an outpatient heart clinic in Isfahan, Iran.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory condition, and Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is known for inducing antioxidant enzymes and reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS). Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) contribute to joint damage by releasing interleukins (IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8) in response to ROS. Given ROS's impact on FLS acquiring an invasive phenotype, our study explored the effects of poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles containing DMF on the expression of the HO-1 enzyme and the inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 in FLS cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease, leads to the deterioration of periodontal tissues due to harmful plaque biofilms, becoming a leading cause of adult tooth loss.
  • Traditional treatments like scaling and root planning improve conditions but sometimes leave behind persistent bacteria, prompting research into new treatment methods.
  • Metal nanoparticles (NPs) show promise as effective antibacterial agents and may offer alternative therapeutic options for periodontitis by inhibiting bacterial growth and reducing inflammation.

Background & Objective: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most prevalent type of ovarian cancer. Previous studies have elucidated different pathways for the progression of this malignancy. The mutation in the B-Raf proto-oncogene, serine/threonine kinase (BRAF) gene, a member of the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway, plays a role in the development of EOC.

Root perforation may occur at any stage of endodontic treatment and is mostly due to iatrogenic injury and may compromise the outcome of endodontic treatment. Repairing a perforation is difficult and the prognosis depends on various factors such as time, site and size of perforation, and the patient's overall health status. Hence, choosing the most appropriate material can be critical for the dentist.

Background And Aims: EUS-guided fine-needle biopsy sampling (EUS-FNB) has largely replaced FNA for tissue diagnosis of pancreatobiliary mass lesions. However, the optimal number of passes required for the diagnosis of malignancy is not clear. We aimed to compare the per-pass performance of 2 types of fine-needle biopsy (FNB) needles for the detection of malignancy.

The most prevalent cause of emergency abdominal surgery is acute appendicitis. Ultrasonography is safe and widely available, although it's operator-dependent and difficult for people with massive bodies. Computed tomography (CT) scans are more accurate than ultrasonography, with a 93 to 98% accuracy rate.
