[A case of unresectable non-small cell lung cancer with pleural dissemination successfully treated with DIF].

A 68-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with an abnormal shadow on her chest CT, which showed a mass lesion 3.5 cm in diameter at segment 7 in the right lung. At thoracotomy, a curative operation could not be performed because of pleural dissemination, so a partial resection was done for the histopathological examination.

Nocardia shimofusensis sp. nov., isolated from soil, and Nocardia higoensis sp. nov., isolated from a patient with lung nocardiosis in Japan.

Three actinomycete strains isolated from soils and one strain isolated from a patient with lung nocardiosis in 1999 and 2001 in Japan have been provisionally assigned to the genus Nocardia on the basis of morphological criteria. These isolates were further investigated to determine their specific taxonomic status. Detailed chemotaxonomic characterization and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of these isolates confirmed that they belong to the genus Nocardia.

Extensive intraoperative peritoneal lavage and chemotherapy for gastric cancer patients with peritoneal free cancer cells.

The effects of extensive intraoperative peritoneal lavage (EIPL) for gastric cancer patients with peritoneal free cancer cells were investigated. This study was based on 22 consecutive patients with peritoneal free cancer cells, among 663 patients who underwent curative surgical treatment for advanced gastric cancer. The 22 patients were followed up for 2 years or until death.

Acute fulminant necrotizing colitis caused by amebiasis: report of a case.

Fulminating colitis rarely develops as a complication of amebiasis; however, it is difficult to diagnose and treat, and associated with a very high mortality rate. We report herein the case of a 62-year-old man with superacute fulminant necrotizing amebic colitis who, despite treatment with aggressive surgery and antiamebic agents, died of multiple organ failure following sepsis on the 25th day after onset. The patient had no immmunosuppressive disorders and claimed that he had never had homosexual intercourse, or traveled to the tropics in recent years.

Release of fructose and hexose phosphates from perivascular cells induced by low density lipoprotein and acceleration of protein glycation in vitro.

We investigated whether low density lipoprotein (LDL) under oxidative stress might induce the release of fructose, glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate from perivascular cells, and also whether these substances might accelerate the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGE) from proteins in vitro. When vascular smooth muscle cells were incubated with LDL in Ham's F10 at 37 degrees C for 48 h. release of all these substances was increased dose-dependently by oxidized LDL.
