Hypertensive heart disease presents increasing morbidity and mortality worldwide, however, the data about its epidemics and its specific symptoms in hypertension patients is scarce. To assess the frequency and correlated symptoms of hypertensive heart disease, 800 hypertension patients were randomly recruited for this study per the guidelines of the American College of Cardiology. The diagnosis of heart disease and its typical symptoms (palpitation and angina) were analyzed for the frequency of hypertensive heart disease in hypertension cohort.

Zonisamide improves Fas/FasL-mediated apoptosis and inflammation in a degenerative cervical myelopathy rat model.

Tissue Cell

April 2023

Department of Neck-Shoulder and Lumbocrural Pain, Yantai Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yantai 264000, Shandong, China. Electronic address:

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is a severe condition of the spinal cord caused by chronic compression. However, no studies to date have examined the effects of zonisamide (ZNS) on DCM via the Fas/FasL-mediated pathway. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ZNS on a DCM rat model and to explore the potential mechanisms.

Tanshinone IIA (TSIIA), a multi-pharmaceutical compound, has been demonstrated to have anti-tumor properties. This study explores the potential regulatory mechanism of TSIIA on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) progression. The cytotoxicity of TSIIA was evaluated by MTT (3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide) and LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) assays.

The effect of Celastrol on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion remains unknown. The study aims to explore the role of circular RNA DLGAP4 (circDLGAP4) in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion and the underlying mechanism. Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury of human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs) was induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGD/R).

Dysregulated microRNA (miRNA or miR) expression is an important cause of immune homeostasis disorder in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and lupus nephritis (LN). The present study evaluated the possibility of using miR-146a-5p as a therapeutic target for treating LN. The effects of miR-146a-5p on lupus syndrome in MRL/lpr mice were evaluated.

Biochanin A protects against iron overload associated knee osteoarthritis via regulating iron levels and NRF2/System xc-/GPX4 axis.

Biomed Pharmacother

January 2023

Department of Orthopaedics, The First Affiliated Hospital, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, 16 Jichang Road, Baiyun Area, Guangzhou 510405, PR China. Electronic address:

Background: Iron homeostasis plays a positive role in articular cartilage health. Excessive iron or iron overload can induce oxidative stress damage in chondrocytes and ferroptosis cell death, advancing knee osteoarthritis (KOA). However, up to date, few effective agents treat iron overload-induced KOA (IOKOA).

Cervical subtotal discectomy prosthesis validated in non-human primate model: A novel artificial cervical disc replacement concept?

Front Bioeng Biotechnol

October 2022

Department of Orthopedics, First Affiliated Hospital and Fifth Affiliated Hospital, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China.

To evaluate the biological function of cervical subtotal discectomy prosthesis (CSDP) implantation in a non-human primate model. A CSDP was tested for cytocompatibility and osseointegration capacity before implantation in non-human primates. Subsequently, the CSDP was improved based on three-dimensional CT measurements of the non-human primate cervical spine.

The study aimed to explore the effects of atractylon on the proliferation and apoptosis of intestinal cancer cells through the phosphatidylinositol 3-hydroxy kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. The intestinal cancer HT29 cell lines were cultured in vitro, and atractylon at different concentrations (15 and 30 mg/mL) was added. Then cell proliferative activity was detected via cell counting kit-8 (CCK8) assay, and the proportion of positive cells was determined using EdU staining.

Alcoholic liver disease is one of the diseases with the highest fatality rate worldwide. The cellular process of autophagy which recycles damaged organelles to maintain protein and organelle homeostasis is found to positively influence survival during hepatic insufficiency, although the mechanism is poorly understood. Palmatine (PLT) has a variety of biological functions, such as broad-spectrum antibacterial action, neuroprotective, antioxidant stress, and antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities.
