Bioaugmented design and functional evaluation of low damage implantable array electrodes.

Bioact Mater

May 2025

State Key Laboratory for Manufacturing System Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, China.

Implantable neural electrodes are key components of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), but the mismatch in mechanical and biological properties between electrode materials and brain tissue can lead to foreign body reactions and glial scarring, and subsequently compromise the long-term stability of electrical signal transmission. In this study, we proposed a new concept for the design and bioaugmentation of implantable electrodes (bio-array electrodes) featuring a heterogeneous gradient structure. Different composite polyaniline-gelatin-alginate based conductive hydrogel formulations were developed for electrode surface coating.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how structural covariance networks (SCNs) differ in patients with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) compared to healthy controls by analyzing brain connectivity and topological attributes using graph theory.
  • The researchers utilized high-resolution 3D T1 images from 40 NIHL patients and 38 healthy controls, assessing factors like clustering coefficient and nodal efficiency, and found significant differences in the connectivity of certain brain regions.
  • Abnormal connection patterns were identified, with disrupted networks primarily in auditory and limbic regions, suggesting a complex relationship between brain connectivity and NIHL that may help in understanding neurological damage.*

Early and highly precise detection is essential for delaying the progression of coronary artery disease (CAD). Previous methods primarily based on single-modal data inherently lack sufficient information that compromises detection precision. This paper proposes a novel multi-modal learning method aimed to enhance CAD detection by integrating ECG, PCG, and coupling signals.

Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) waste gradually accumulates in the environment, posing ecological risks. Enzymatic hydrolysis holds great potential in the end-of-life management of PBAT, but reported enzymes require high reaction temperatures, limiting their practical industrial applications. In this study, we discovered that the marine fungus Alternaria alternata FB1 can efficiently degrade PBAT at 28 °C.

Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Chemical Energy Storage and Novel Cell Technology, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Liaocheng University, Liaocheng 252059, P. R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The text discusses the synthesis of elongated lanthanide core topologies, specifically focusing on four new rod-shaped dysprosium phosphonate clusters created by using lanthanide 1-naphthylmethylphosphonates and different terminated pyrazinyl hydrazones.
  • - These dysprosium clusters are surrounded by terminal co-ligands known as pentadentate bis-chelates, and a sodium ion is used as a cation template to help shape the clusters.
  • - The elongation of these rod-shaped clusters notably affects their magnetic relaxation behavior, changing it from a one-step process to more complex multi-step processes based on the specific cluster structure.

May 2024

Department of Economics, Division of Management and Administrative Science, University of Education, Lahore, Pakistan.

It is a well-known fact that political education plays a pivotal role in shaping informed, engaged, and responsible citizens in a country. The empirical literature lacks the exploration of the impact of political education on political participation in addition to political efficacy and social media usage. This study investigates the interconnected relationship between political education, social media usage, political efficacy, and political participation in China.

As a basic parameter of rock, the rock bridge angle plays an important role in maintaining the stability of rock masses. To study the size effect of rock bridge angle on the uniaxial compressive strength of rocks, this paper adopts the principle of regression analysis and combines numerical simulation to carry out relevant research. The research results indicate that: (1) the uniaxial compressive strength decreases with the increase of the rock bridge angle, showing a power function relationship; (2) The uniaxial compressive strength decreases with the increase of rock size and tends to stabilize when the rock size is greater than 350 mm, showing a significant size effect.

School of Life Sciences, Ludong University, Yantai 264025, PR China. Electronic address:

Inorganic mercury (IHg) is hazardous to marine organisms especially resulting in neurotoxicity, bivalves are sensitive to pollutants as "ocean sentinel", but data on the neurotoxicity of IHg in bivalves are sparse. So we chosed M. chinensis philippi with typical neural structures in bivalves to investigate the neurotoxicity of IHg, which could be helpful to understand the specificity of neural regulation and the response characteristics of bivalves.

Electronic address:

The coastal ocean systems play paramount role in the nutrient biogeochemistry because of its interconnected environment. To gain a novel insight into coupling relationships between bacterial community, functioning properties and nutrient metabolism, we conducted analysis on the patterns and driving factors of planktonic bacterial functional community across subsurface water of marine ranching near the Yellow Sea in both summer and winter. Illumina HiSeq Sequencing and a corresponding set of biogeochemical data were used to assess distribution patterns of taxa, adaptive mechanism and metabolic function.

A structurally dense hydrogel, with strong hydrogen bonding networks, was formed from poly(vinyl alcohol), sodium alginate, and oligomeric proanthocyanidins, using a combination of freeze-thaw cycles and calcium ion cross-linking. The structure of the hydrogel was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Mechanical testing and thermogravimetric analysis showed that incorporation of proanthocyanidins enhanced both the mechanical properties and the thermal stability of the hydrogel.
