Schwann cells (SCs) are necessary for peripheral nerve regeneration due to their plasticity and trophic supply after sciatic nerve injury (SNI). However, the multiple adaptations of SCs are still poorly understood. This study explored the effects of transient axonal glycoprotein type-1 (TAG-1) on cell migration and neuropilin1 (NRP1) expression in SCs and examined the impact of TAG-1 on nerve regeneration in rats with SNI.

December 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yantai Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, No.39 Xingfu Road, Zhifu District, Yantai City, 264000, Shandong Province, China.

Ovarian cancer is characterized by a high rate of recurrence and a poor prognosis. Ferroptosis, a programmed cell death that is dependent on iron and lipid peroxidation, has emerged as a novel therapeutic target in recent years. This study investigated the effects of Obacunone, a naturally occurring compound present in citrus fruits, on the induction of ferroptosis in ovarian cancer via the Akt/p53 signaling pathway.

Article Synopsis
  • The research investigates how iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNP Fe3O4) combined with gambogic acid (GA-MNP Fe3O4) affect colorectal cancer (CRC), showing an enhanced antitumor effect against CRC cells.
  • GA targets a protein called RORB, which when activated by GA, helps to inhibit CRC metastasis, while knocking down RORB reduces the efficacy of GA-MNP Fe3O4 in combating cancer spread.
  • RORB also promotes the expression of another protein, EMILIN1, and increasing EMILIN1 levels can counteract the negative effects of RORB knockdown, further aiding in the reduction of CRC metastasis.

Characterization of morphological and chemical changes using atomic force microscopy and metabolism assays: the relationship between surface wax and skin greasiness in apple fruit.

Front Plant Sci

October 2024

School of Food Engineering, Yantai Key Laboratory of Nanoscience and Technology for Prepared Food, Yantai Engineering Research Center of Food Green Processing and Quality Control, Ludong University, Yantai, Shandong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates skin greasiness in stored 'Jonagold' apples, linking it to changes in wax components through quantitative analysis using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).
  • Results show that as apples become greasier, wax crystals disappear and roughness parameters (Ra, Rq, Rmax, Rz) decline significantly by 70% to 85%.
  • Chemical analysis reveals an increase in liquid esters related to wax changes and highlights the role of specific genes in ester production, while treatments like 1-Methylcyclopropene can help suppress greasiness.

Background: The existing body of research concerning the impact of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on early postoperative recovery is marked by a lack of consensus. This meta-analysis, encompassing a systematic review of randomised controlled trials, seeks to critically assess the efficacy of TEAS in relation to awakening from general anaesthesia in the postoperative period.

Methods: The inclusion criteria for this study were peer-reviewed randomised controlled trials that evaluated the influence of TEAS on the process of regaining consciousness following general anaesthesia.

Objective: The aim of this research was to gain a thorough understanding of the processes involved in cell communication and discover potential indicators for treating multiple myeloma (MM) through the use of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). And explored the expression of multiple myeloma-related subgroups on metal ion-related pathways to explore the relationship between MM and metal ions.

Methods: We performed a fair examination using single-cell RNA sequencing on 32 bone marrow specimens collected from 22 individuals at different points of MM advancement and 9 individuals without any health issues.

The value of the electrocardiogram in the recognition of cardiac amyloidosis: a systematic meta-analysis.

BMC Cardiovasc Disord

September 2024

Department of Electrocardiogram Room, Yantai Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, No.39, Xingfu Street, Zhifu District, Yantai City, Shandong Province, 264001, China.

Objective: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the diagnostic value of the electrocardiogram (ECG) method in detecting cardiac amyloidosis (CA) to indicate its clinical application.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, OVID Medline, and Cochrane Library databases for clinical trials assessing the diagnostic performance of ECG in detecting CA. We employed the risk ratio and 95% confidence interval (CI) to explicit estimates.

Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a marker associated with astrocyte activation and plays a role in various pathologic processes, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases. Interacting boson approximation (Iba-1) is a marker protein for microglia, which are important in neuroinflammatory responses. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the impact of general anesthetics on the expression of GFAP and Iba-1 in animal models.

Background: Radioactive iodine-125 (I) microparticle therapy is a new type of internal radiation therapy that has shown unique advantages in the treatment of malignant tumors, especially hepatocellular carcinoma. Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma frequently experience portal vein embolism, which exacerbates the difficulty and complexity of treatment. I particles, used in local radiotherapy, can directly act on tumor tissue and reduce damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Eye movement intervention facilitates concurrent perception and memory processing.

Cereb Cortex

May 2024

Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences, Zhejiang University, No. 388 Yuhangtang Road, Hangzhou 310058, Zhejiang, China.

A widely used psychotherapeutic treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involves performing bilateral eye movement (EM) during trauma memory retrieval. However, how this treatment-described as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)-alleviates trauma-related symptoms is unclear. While conventional theories suggest that bilateral EM interferes with concurrently retrieved trauma memories by taxing the limited working memory resources, here, we propose that bilateral EM actually facilitates information processing.
