Purpose: Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) is a minimally invasive disc surgery that can be performed under local anesthesia and requires only an eight-mm skin incision. For the patients with lumbar foraminal stenosis, the migrated disc is difficult to remove with a simple transforaminal approach. In such cases, the foraminoplasty techniques can be used.

The objective of this study is to find about the association between calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) genetic variants and susceptibility to nephrolithiasis in the Chinese Han population. This hospital-based case-control study included 319 nephrolithiasis cases and 378 healthy controls subjects. Two SNPs in CaSR were genotyped using the TaqMan assay.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) in acute ischaemic stroke and its impact on the recurrence of vascular events.
Methods: We conducted a multicentre, prospective, randomised, open label, blinded, controlled clinical trial enrollingpatients with an onset of acute stroke within 7 days from five hospitals in China Jiangsu Province. Participants were assigned to the GBE group (450 mg GBE with 100 mg aspirin daily) or the control group (100 mg aspirin daily) for 6 months.

The association between circulating microRNA-375 (miR-375) expression and cancers has been studied; however, the results are inconsistent. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for studies concerning the diagnostic value of miR-375 for cancer. The bivariate meta-analysis model was employed to summarize sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) for miR-375 in the diagnosis of cancer.

Objective: The NLRP3 inflammasome plays an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammation in diabetic nephropathy (DN). Pioglitazone (PIO) has been found to exert an anti-inflammatory effect in patients with diabetes mellitus, but it is still unclear whether PIO exhibits a similar effect in DN. We aimed to explore the effect and underlying mechanism of PIO on DN, as well as investigate if NLRP3 is a pharmacologic target of PIO.

Background: Krüppel-like factors (KLFs) have been identified in multi-cancers and act as oncogenes or tumor suppressors. The function of KLF15, one member of KLFs, has not been well elucidated, especially in gastric cancer (GC).
Aims: This study was designed to investigate the prognostic value and biological functions of KLF15 in GC.

Matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) plays a beneficial role in the delayed phase of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). However, the mechanism is obscure. Here, we constructed hypoxia response element (HRE)-regulated MMP-9 to explore its effect on glial scars and neurogenesis in delayed ischemic stroke.

Background: Recent studies indicated that some glycolytic enzymes are complicated, multifaceted proteins rather than simple components of the glycolytic pathway. FBP1 plays a vital role in glucose metabolism, but its role in gastric cancer tumorigenesis and metastasis has not been fully understood.
Methods: The prognostic value of FBP1 was first studied in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and validated in in-house database.

Some anticonvulsant drugs are associated with cognitive ability in patients; Topiramate (TPM) is well known as an effective anticonvulsant agent applied in clinical settings. However, the effect of TPM on the cognitive function is rarely studied. In this study, we aimed to observe the effects of TPM on cell proliferation and neuronal differentiation in the dentate gyrus (DG) of the D-galactose-induced aging mice by Ki-67 and doublecortin (DCX) immunohistochemistry.

Hemorrhagic stroke is a common and severe neurological disorder and is associated with high rates of mortality and morbidity, especially for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Increasing evidence demonstrates that oxidative stress responses participate in the pathophysiological processes of secondary brain injury (SBI) following ICH. The mechanisms involved in interoperable systems include endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, neuronal apoptosis and necrosis, inflammation, and autophagy.

Methods: Seven patients with soft, highly down-migrated lumbar disc herniation who underwent PELD via a translaminar approach under local anaesthesia from January 2013 to June 2015, including five patients who underwent failed PELD in other hospitals, were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical outcomes were evaluated according to pre-operative and post-operative visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, Oswestry disability index (ODI) scores and post-operative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in industrialized nations. Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of stroke, and excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by mitochondria is thought to be the main cause of oxidative stress. NADPH oxidase (NOX) enzymes have recently been identified and studied as important producers of ROS in brain tissues after stroke.

Background: Pseudoachalasia is a rare disorder whose presentation strongly resembles idiopathic achalasia.
Case Presentation: Here, we present a case of a 42-year-old female patient with esophageal leiomyoma who was initially diagnosed with achalasia. On endoscopical investigation, however, it became apparent that she had pseudoachalasia as consequence of a leiomyoma at the esophagogastric junction (EGJ).

Purpose: There is currently no standard treatment strategy for patients with advanced metastatic gastric cancer experiencing progression after two or more lines of chemotherapy. We assessed the efficacy and safety of apatinib, a novel vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 tyrosine kinase inhibitor, in patients with advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma for whom at least two lines of prior chemotherapy had failed.
Patients And Methods: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase III trial.
