The mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU) is a transmembrane protein facilitating the entry of calcium ions into mitochondria from the cell cytosol. Maintaining calcium balance is crucial for enhancing cellular energy supply and regulating cell death. The interplay of calcium balance through MCU and the sodium-calcium exchanger is known, but its regulation in the breast cancer tumor microenvironment remains elusive.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), a ligand-gated cation channel, is a receptor for vanilloids on sensory neurons and is also activated by capsaicin, heat, protons, arachidonic acid metabolites, and inflammatory mediators on neuronal or non-neuronal cells. However, the role of the TRPV1 receptor in pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion and its potential regulatory mechanisms in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation has yet to be entirely understood. To investigate the role and regulatory mechanism of the TRPV1 receptor in regulating LPS-induced inflammatory responses, bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) harvested from wild-type (WT) and TRPV1 deficient (Trpv1) mice were used as the cell model.

A non-invasive nomogram for predicting heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in taiwanese outpatients with unexplained dyspnea and fatigue.

J Formos Med Assoc

December 2024

Division of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine, National Taiwan University College of Medicine and Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan; Division of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch, Yunlin County, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Background: While Reddy proposed the H2FPEF diagnostic algorithm to aid in diagnosing heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), certain parameters like age and obesity are not suitable for Asian population, especially given the increasing incidence of HFpEF in younger individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to develop an easy-to-use nomogram with non-invasive indices that can be used in outpatient clinics in Taiwan to quickly estimate the probability of HFpEF and help decide whether further invasive cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is needed.

Methods: Outpatients with unexplained dyspnea and fatigue were recruited divided into HFpEF (n = 64) and non-HFpEF (n = 34) groups based on invasive CPET and echocardiography.

The Current Trend of Fertility Preservation in Patients with Cervical Cancer.

Gynecol Minim Invasive Ther

December 2023

Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health, Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taichung, Taiwan.

Although the incidence of most cancers increases with age, a considerable number of patients receive a diagnosis of cancer during their reproductive years. Young women wishing to get pregnant after cancer treatment should be provided consultation for fertility preservation and possible options. In patients with cervical cancer, hysterectomy is often inevitable because the uterus is located too close to the cervix.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) shares common clinical risk factors, for example, endothelial dysfunction, with preserved ejection fraction (LVEF) heart failure (HFpEF). Whether PAD is associated with preclinical systolic dysfunction and higher HF risk among individuals presenting preserved LVEF remains uncertain. We retrospectively included outpatients with at least one known or established cardiovascular (CV) risk factor with LVEF ≥ 50%.

Spilled gallstone mimicking intra-abdominal seeding of gallbladder adenocarcinoma: A case report.

World J Gastrointest Surg

February 2024

Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Department of Surgery, Ren-Ai Branch, Taipei City Hospital, Taipei 106, Taiwan.

Background: Gallbladder rupture is common in laparoscopic cholecystectomy because the gallbladder is usually in acute or chronic inflammation status. The gallstones may sometime be spilled into the peritoneal cavity, resulting in intra-abdominal abscess if the gallstones were not retrieved. The diagnosis of intra-abdominal abscess caused by unretrieved gallstone can usually be correctly identified in the routine imaging studies, such as abdominal ultrasonography or computed tomography (CT).

Dynamic bidirectional regulation of NLRC3 and gammaherpesviruses during viral latency in B lymphocytes.

J Med Virol

March 2024

Virus-Host Interactions Laboratory, Department of Biotechnology, College of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, Korea University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • * During EBV infection, the viral protein LMP1 lowers NLRC3 levels, while simultaneously, NLRC3 works to degrade LMP1, creating a complex regulation system.
  • * Research shows that in mice lacking NLRC3, there is increased viral latency after gammaherpesvirus infection, highlighting the importance of NLRC3 in controlling viral infections linked to potential tumorigenesis.

Recapitulating the immune system of hemophilia A patients with inhibitors using immunodeficient mice.

Thromb Res

March 2024

Department of Clinical Laboratory Science and Medical Biotechnology, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Background And Aim: Treating hemophilia A patients who develop inhibitors remains a clinical challenge. A mouse model of hemophilia A can be used to test the efficacy of strategies for inhibitor suppression, but the differences in the immune systems of mice and humans limit its utility. To address this shortcoming, we established a humanized NOD/SCID-IL2rγ hemophilia A (hu-NSG-HA) mouse model with a severely deficient mouse immune system presenting a patient's adapted immune cells.
